A flight price alert tells you that a tracking service detected a fare change or expects one; it does not hold a seat or lock in the quoted price. By the time you open the alert, the airline’s available fare or the seller’s displayed offer may have changed. Recheck the exact itinerary and ticket conditions, then verify the current total with the seller before deciding.
What a flight price alert tracks
Google Flights lets travelers track either a route or a specific flight. You can choose dates, or select “Any dates” when your plans are flexible. Google says it may email when the price for a tracked route or flight changes significantly. With Any dates tracking, it emails when the route’s minimum fare drops significantly over a month; if there is no large enough drop, it sends regular email with the best available flight prices. It may also alert you when a tracked route is likely to rise or when a current fare may expire soon and a replacement is likely to cost more. Google Flights Help
Those documented conditions do not establish a universal refresh schedule or delivery time. Treat an alert as a prompt to check availability again, not as a live quote or reservation.

Why a fare can change between the alert and your booking
Airlines adjust which fares are available
Airlines use revenue management to forecast demand and manage inventory, including opening and closing fare classes. Pricing can also reflect strategy, competition, costs, market conditions, and codeshares or alliances. As availability and offers change, a lower-priced fare that was available earlier may no longer be offered. These industry-level factors explain how prices can move; they do not identify the specific cause of a particular alert’s change. IATA, “Revenue Management: the Heartbeat of Aviation”

IATA’s retailing vision describes booking classes as hosting fares of particular values and feeding seat availability to pricing engines. That is a change in fare availability and offers—not evidence that an individual click or alert makes a fare rise. IATA, Airline Retailing
The alert may no longer match the ticket being shown
Two results with similar schedules can be different ticket products. In the United States, airlines may offer ticket types with different restrictions; discounted or basic economy fares generally have tighter conditions, which can include nonrefundable tickets, baggage limits, or no seat assignment. Compare the restrictions and included services as well as the headline price. U.S. Department of Transportation, Airline Tickets

What Google’s price forecast means
Google’s tips such as “prices are unlikely to drop” and “prices are likely to increase” are predictions based on past flight-price trends. Google cautions that future prices may not behave as predicted. Some alerts include an estimated increase and confidence in that estimate, but Google’s help information does not give a universal accuracy rate or fully explain the forecasting method. Use a forecast as one input to your timing decision, not as a promise about what a fare will do. Google Flights Help Google Flights Help

IATA reported a global aviation profit margin of 3.7%, or a little above $7 per passenger per segment, in 2025. That is industry context, not evidence of an individual airline’s margin or the reason for a particular fare change. IATA, “Revenue Management: the Heartbeat of Aviation”

How to check an alert before booking
- Open the result and verify the trip. Confirm dates, airports, stops, cabin, passenger count, airline, and flight numbers. A different itinerary is not a like-for-like price change.
- Compare ticket conditions. Check baggage, seat assignment, refundability, change terms, and any optional services that matter to your trip. In the United States, advertised ticket prices must include applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier surcharges, but optional services and restrictions still need separate review. U.S. Department of Transportation, Airline Tickets
- Verify the seller’s current offer. Google Flights results may link to an airline or an online travel agency. Check the price and conditions shown by the seller you would actually use. Google Flights Help
- Decide using your priorities, not the alert alone. Compare the total mandatory price, schedule, fare restrictions, included baggage and seat selection, change or refund flexibility, and seller. Google Flights’ “Best” and “Cheapest” groupings can involve trade-offs such as convenience, online travel agency links, or self-transfer arrangements; the lowest number may not be the closest substitute for your tracked flight.
In the United States, an airline generally cannot increase the price after the purchase and transaction are fully complete, except for a specified government tax or fee change when disclosure and consent conditions are met. That rule is separate from a pre-purchase quote changing while you are checking out. U.S. Department of Transportation, Airline Tickets
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why you cannot infer the cause from one alert
A changed result could reflect fare availability, a different ticket product, or a change in what the seller is offering. Public alert documentation does not establish a specific cause for an individual fare change, nor does it specify a universal delivery interval or a prediction accuracy percentage. Use the current seller offer and its conditions as the basis for your decision.
