It does not reliably make a complete, correct, safe, original, or publishable mod on its own. The most useful way to think about AI in modding is as a set of task-specific assistants—with the creator still responsible for compatibility, testing, rights, and the final result.
Where AI helps in game modding
Different AI workflows solve different problems. Code assistants can help explain an unfamiliar API; graphics tools can assist with remastering certain assets; dialogue systems can make characters respond more flexibly. None of these capabilities means an AI can independently take a mod from idea to a polished release.
Code help and unfamiliar APIs
The V Rising modding documentation describes using AI to explain unfamiliar APIs, suggest debugging approaches, produce boilerplate, and help newer developers learn. A practical use is to ask for an explanation or a small utility, then check every symbol, identifier, and assumption against the documentation for the target game and version. The documentation recommends revising and thoroughly testing generated code rather than treating it as finished work: V Rising modding guide to AI.
This can reduce the time spent getting oriented or writing routine code, but it does not remove the need to understand what the code does. A model may invent an API or prefab identifier, leave placeholder code, or generate an inefficient loop that causes performance problems or crashes. A knowledgeable modder may move faster; a beginner may get better explanations and starting points, but prompting alone is not a reliable route to a working mod.

Texture enhancement in a specific workflow
NVIDIA RTX Remix is a particular graphics-remaster platform, not a general AI mod maker. NVIDIA says Remix can capture game assets, help modders enhance materials with generative AI, create physically based material maps, and upscale low-resolution textures. NVIDIA also describes a REST API connection between RTX Remix and ComfyUI. These capabilities belong to the RTX Remix workflow and RTX AI PC hardware; they should not be read as support for every game or computer. Check current game compatibility and hardware requirements before planning a project: NVIDIA’s RTX Remix tools overview.
NVIDIA said in 2025 that more than 5 billion PC game mods are downloaded annually, more than 30,000 modders had experimented with RTX Remix since its beta release, and ray-traced mods of hundreds of classic titles had reached more than 1 million gamers. These are company-stated figures, not an independently audited count; they indicate the scale NVIDIA attributes to modding and its platform, not the prevalence of AI-authored mods.

Dialogue and reactive NPC experiments
Ubisoft’s NEO NPC project shows how generative dialogue can be explored with human-defined characters. In Ubisoft’s March 2024 account, writers created the characters’ histories and voices; the model improvised within guardrails, and the team adjusted it when responses drifted from the intended character. Ubisoft described NEO NPC as a prototype that still had a way to go before implementation in a game, not a feature routinely shipped in commercial games. The account is available in Ubisoft’s NEO NPC overview.
Two other examples illustrate different stages of this work. Convai’s Modding Framework documentation describes adding AI-driven NPC features to existing Unreal Engine games through its C++ SDK and UE4SS. The cited guide names Unreal Engine versions 4.12 through 5.2; compatibility beyond that range is not established by that page and should be checked against current documentation: Convai Modding Framework documentation.

The academic StarCharM case study explores iterative creation of Stardew Valley NPC mods, allowing users to start with limited input and adjust the result. Its user study involved 10 Stardew Valley players. Participants saw potential for generative tools to widen participation, while also raising concerns about originality and community engagement. That small, game-specific study is evidence of an experiment—not proof that AI has democratized modding at scale: StarCharM case study.
What AI cannot reliably do for a modder
- Guarantee that code is correct. Generated code can refer to APIs that do not exist, contain placeholders, or cause crashes and performance problems. Check it against the right game and modding documentation, then test it in the actual environment.
- Guarantee a consistent or suitable character. Ubisoft’s prototype relied on writer-led design, boundaries, and repeated adjustment. Dialogue can stray from the character or produce unsuitable results; a fluent response is not proof that it fits the game.
- Take over legal and licensing responsibilities. The V Rising guide cautions that generated code may still be subject to applicable licenses if it is materially similar to licensed code. Avoid pasting large blocks of licensed code into prompts or asking a model to recreate a specific mod without understanding the rights and attribution involved.
- Make work publishable just because it compiles. A successful build does not establish that a mod behaves correctly, is safe, meets community expectations, or complies with distribution rules. The creator remains responsible for the shipped result. As the V Rising guide puts it, “If you ship the code, you own the consequences.”
- Guarantee platform acceptance. Nexus Mods’ April 2023 statement said AI-generated content was not automatically against its rules, while noting that content could be removed after an appropriate credible complaint from an affected creator or rights holder. That is a dated statement, not confirmation of the platform’s rules today. Review the current policy before uploading: Nexus Mods’ AI-content statement.
What broader game-industry AI figures do—and don’t—show
The Associated Press reported on September 25, 2024, that a Game Developers Conference report released in January found nearly half of surveyed game developers said generative AI tools were being used in their workplace. AP also reported that 31% said they personally used the tools, while roughly four in five surveyed developers worried about ethical use. These figures describe game developers generally, not modders specifically; AP’s cited passage does not state the survey’s sample size: Associated Press report on AI in game development.

They provide context for adoption and concern across game development, but should not be used to estimate how many modders use AI. Similarly, platform-specific experiments and vendor-reported Remix figures do not establish an industry-wide rate of AI-created mods.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use AI without handing over the mod
- Choose one bounded task. Ask for an explanation of an API, a draft of a small helper, or a texture workflow—not an entire finished mod whose requirements and dependencies the model cannot verify.
- Give the relevant context. State the game, version, engine, mod loader, and the behavior you want. Treat any suggested method, prefab name, or compatibility claim as something to confirm.
- Review before running. Remove placeholders, inspect what the code accesses or changes, and make sure you understand its control flow and dependencies. Do not include licensed code in a prompt unless you have the rights and permission to do so.
- Test in the target environment. Check that the mod loads, behaves as intended, and does not create crashes or unreasonable resource use. A model’s assurance is not a test result.
- Check rights and distribution terms. Review the licenses for source material and assets, attribution obligations, and the mod platform’s current content rules before release.
For character dialogue, the same principle applies at the design level: provide a clear character, purpose, and boundaries, then evaluate the responses for consistency and suitability. Ubisoft Senior Vice President of Production Technology Guillemette Picard summarized the intended standard for NEO NPC: “Generative AI is only of value if it has value for them.” Ubisoft Data Scientist Mélanie Lopez Malet warned about the importance of player input: “It’s garbage in, garbage out,” and Narrative Director Virginie Mosser said, “It’s important to us to reiterate that these characters do not have free will.” Those statements describe the prototype’s design priorities, not a guarantee that other dialogue systems will behave the same way.
