AlfredCamera is a sensible first app to try if you have a compatible spare phone and another device to watch its camera feed. AtHome is an alternative with a separate camera-streamer app and viewer app. Neither option has been independently tested here, so choose based on your phones’ compatibility, the features you need, and how each app handles recordings and data.
Which old-phone security camera app should you choose?

Choose AlfredCamera if compatibility is the deciding factor
Its published minimum operating-system requirements distinguish the camera phone from the viewer, which is useful when pairing an older handset with a newer one. Confirm that both devices can install the app: Alfred says store availability is a practical way to check whether a device can run the camera app. Features and subscription terms may vary by region.
Choose AtHome if its listed controls match your setup
AtHome’s listings describe options such as scheduled recording and privacy masking. Check that the separate streamer and viewer apps are available for your devices, then verify current costs and storage limits in your regional store. A feature appearing in a listing does not establish how reliably it performs.
What you need before setup
- Two devices: one compatible phone to act as the camera and a second device to view it remotely.
- Power and Wi-Fi: keep the camera phone connected to reliable power and the network needed for your intended setup. Continuous monitoring through outages or operating-system interruptions has not been established.
- A suitable position: place the phone so its camera can see the area you want to monitor. An adjustable phone mount or clamp can help aim and secure it, but it is optional, not an app requirement.
- Appropriate permissions: review camera, microphone, notifications, account, cloud-storage, and data-safety settings before relying on the system.
How to turn the old phone into a camera
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the old phone can install and run the camera app, and that the viewer meets its requirements. For AlfredCamera, camera and viewer minimums differ: Android 5.0+ or iOS 12+ for the camera, and Android 7.0+ or iOS 15+ for the viewer, according to Alfred’s support page.
- Install the right apps. With AlfredCamera, install the same app on both devices. With AtHome, install AtHome Video Streamer on the old phone and AtHome Camera on the viewer. Availability can vary by device and region.
- Assign the device roles and pair them. Set the spare handset as the camera and the other device as the viewer. Follow the app’s pairing prompts; Alfred’s listing describes QR-code pairing.
- Position and secure the phone. Aim the camera at the intended area and use a stable surface or optional mount so the view does not shift.
- Review access and storage settings. Check account security, camera and microphone permissions, alerts, and whether recordings are stored locally or uploaded to a cloud service.
- Test the complete setup in place. Check remote viewing, alerts, playback, and how the phone behaves on power and Wi-Fi in the location where you plan to use it. The app listings do not establish performance during outages or interruptions.
Understand the limits before relying on phone monitoring
An app listing can tell you what a developer says a feature does, but it cannot show whether motion or human detection will work reliably in your room, how quickly alerts arrive, or how long a device will keep streaming under your conditions. Test those behaviors yourself before treating the setup as dependable monitoring.
