Use ESC/POS commands when your thermal printer supports them; send those commands as raw bytes from the ESP32 if you want direct control. ESC/POS and “raw” are not competing printer languages: ESC/POS defines what the bytes mean, while raw describes sending the bytes without a general-purpose printer driver translating a document.

The right setup depends on two separate checks: whether the exact printer model supports the commands and features your project needs, and whether its interface can be connected safely to the ESP32. A UART peripheral on the ESP32 is a way to transmit data, not proof that a printer can be wired directly to it.

What is the difference between ESC/POS and raw printing?

ESC/POS is a command system for point-of-sale printers. “Raw printing” usually means passing a byte stream directly to an output interface rather than sending a document through a printer driver that interprets and renders it. Since ESC/POS commands are byte sequences, an ESP32 application can send ESC/POS over a raw connection.

That distinction matters when choosing software: the question is not “ESC/POS or raw?” but whether to construct and send printer commands directly or use a higher-level library or driver to compose the output. Epson describes ESC/POS as its original POS printer command system and notes that direct control requires understanding printer specifications and command combinations, compared with using drivers or applications (Epson TM-m30II-H Technical Reference Guide).

  • 【Single-Cable Smart Power System】Base board negotiates with USB-C PD adapters to supply 9V to the printer while powering your MCU simultaneously
  • 【Simplified Wiring Setup】Only one Type-C cable and one PD charger required; eliminates multiple power supplies and reduces wiring complexity
  • 【Important Power Requirement】Requires USB-C PD adapter with 9V output. Standard USB or PC Type-C ports (5V only) will NOT power the printer
  • 【Optimized for Receipt Printing】Supports UART TTL and RS232. 203 DPI resolution, 50–80 mm/s print speed, 48mm effective width on 58mm paper—ideal for receipts, bills, and tickets

Which approach should you use?

Approach Good fit when Trade-off
Direct ESC/POS bytes You need direct access to supported printer functions and are prepared to build the command sequences your receipt requires. Requires understanding the exact printer’s command support and command combinations. Epson notes this development burden in its technical reference guide.
Higher-level library or driver You want help composing receipt output or converting content, such as images, into printer-ready data. It can reduce some implementation work, but cannot make an unsupported printer command or incompatible physical interface work.

For a straightforward receipt, send only commands documented for the target model. A library may simplify layout or image conversion, but it does not eliminate model-specific command or interface constraints.

Check the printer’s command support before relying on a feature

“ESC/POS compatible” does not guarantee that every command is implemented on every printer. Feature support can vary by model, so consult the exact printer’s command reference before building around a particular function.

  • We really like this printer because its easy to make Bold, underline , inverted text , variable line spacing, left/center/right justification, barcodes with adjustable height, and even custom QR code.
  • Open the paper compartment cover on the front panel to change the paper, the operation is simple and convenient. The structure is beautiful, and the slider can be moved to fix the printer on the device by twisting the screws on both sides of the paper bin.

Epson’s TM-T20X supported-command list is a model-specific example of documented ESC/POS support. Epson’s broader ESC/POS command reference organizes commands for functions including bit images, barcodes, QR codes, character handling, feeding, cutting and status. The catalog is not a guarantee that a particular printer supports every listed function: check that model’s supported-command list.

UART is a transport, not a printer protocol

An ESP32 can transmit data through its UART peripheral, and Espressif documents UART configuration and driver support in the ESP-IDF UART documentation. That describes the ESP32’s serial transport; it does not establish that a particular thermal printer accepts UART or can be connected directly.

Before wiring, compare the printer and ESP32 hardware documentation. Confirm the printer’s host interface, serial settings if applicable, connector and electrical requirements. Do not infer TTL-level pins, voltage compatibility, baud rate or connector compatibility from the phrase “thermal printer.” If the devices’ interfaces or electrical levels differ, use an appropriate adapter or interface circuit rather than connecting them directly.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Choose a documented printer. Find the exact model’s manual and supported-command list. Epson’s POS technical reference landing page links to its developer documentation.
  2. Match commands to the required receipt. Verify support for every feature you plan to use, such as images, QR codes, barcodes, cutting or status reporting.
  3. Confirm the connection path. Check that the printer offers an interface the ESP32 can use, directly or through a suitable adapter, and verify electrical requirements and serial settings from the manuals.
  4. Choose direct commands or a helper library. Send supported ESC/POS bytes directly when you want command-level control; use a compatible higher-level tool if it reduces receipt composition work.
  5. Test the smallest useful print job first. Start with basic text and feeding, then add model-supported features one at a time. This helps distinguish command support problems from transport or wiring problems.

What the Epson TM-T20X example does—and does not—show

The Epson TM-T20X is a concrete example of a receipt printer with an official ESC/POS supported-command reference. That makes it useful when evaluating command support. It does not show that the printer connects directly to an ESP32: command compatibility and physical-interface compatibility are separate questions, and the connection must be checked against the printer’s hardware documentation.
