Choose email if you want to review fare changes in your inbox; choose push if your flight-alert service supports notifications on your phone and you want alerts surfaced there. Neither channel guarantees a faster booking opportunity, and not every service offers both. The deciding factors are your device, travel-date flexibility, what triggers an alert, and how easily you can manage the messages.
How email and push alerts differ
| Decision | Push or mobile notification | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | In your email inbox, where you can review it later. | On a supported device through a service’s app or notification system. Google documents mobile notifications for tracked prices on Android. |
| Device and service support | Available when the service supports email alerts for your search. | Depends on the service, app, platform, and possibly region. Check the current app and its notification settings rather than assuming app-based alert setup means push delivery. |
| Best fit | Travelers who prefer to check fare updates when they choose. | Travelers who want an alert surfaced on a supported phone. |
Push is not automatically faster in a way that guarantees you will see or book a lower fare first. Delivery and visibility depend on the service and your device settings, and the fare can change before you act.
Check what the service actually tracks
Specific flights and dates
Google Flights lets you track a route or a specific flight. Its computer help page describes email updates for tracked searches when prices change significantly. Skyscanner describes email price alerts for a route and date. The details matter: a service’s app may help you set up an alert without sending it as a push notification.
Google Flights price tracking and Skyscanner price alerts document their respective options and setup methods.

Flexible dates
If you can travel whenever the fare is lowest, Google Flights documents an “Any dates” tracking option. Google says it may email when the route’s minimum price drops significantly over a month; it may otherwise send regular emails with available prices. That is different from tracking a fixed itinerary, and it is not evidence that every price movement will trigger an alert.
Compare the alert trigger, not just the delivery channel
Alerts are useful only if you understand what change prompts them. Google describes significant price changes for tracked flights or routes, with a monthly minimum-price condition for “Any dates.” Skyscanner says it emails when prices change. These descriptions are not identical, so do not expect the same fare movement to produce the same alert from both services.

Before relying on an alert, read the service’s description for the exact route and dates you are tracking. If you want to catch a particular itinerary, track that itinerary where supported; if your dates are flexible, use a flexible-date option only when the service explicitly offers one.
Choose a channel you can manage
- Prefer email if you want alerts in a place you already check and can review later.
- Prefer push only if your chosen service currently supports it on your device and you want notifications surfaced there.
- Check how to stop the alerts before creating several searches. KAYAK’s help page documents controls to pause or delete alerts and an unsubscribe link for alert emails.
- Keep the number of alerts practical. Track the routes or dates you may actually book so updates remain useful rather than becoming inbox or notification noise.
KAYAK flight price alert controls explains its documented management options. An older KAYAK app announcement mentioned push alerts for flight price drops, but that historical announcement does not establish current availability across app versions or locations. Verify push support in the current app before choosing it as your primary channel.

Verify the fare before booking
A price alert is not a fare hold. Skyscanner warns that the emailed fare may no longer be available when you open the message, sometimes after only minutes or seconds. Treat an alert as a prompt to check, not as a reservation or guaranteed price.
- Open the alert and return to the flight-search service.
- Confirm the route, travel dates, times, and other itinerary details still match.
- Check the live price and availability before proceeding to book.
- If the fare has changed or disappeared, search again for the same dates or adjust your search if your plans are flexible.
Skyscanner’s price-alert guidance explains that alert prices can change before booking.

A practical way to decide
- Start with your device. Choose push only if the service documents current support for your phone and platform; otherwise, use email.
- Match the tracking option to your plans. Use a specific route or flight for fixed plans, or Google Flights’ “Any dates” option if you can travel flexibly.
- Read the trigger description. A significant-change alert, a flexible-date minimum-price alert, and an email sent when prices change are not interchangeable.
- Check the controls. Confirm how to pause, delete, or unsubscribe if you no longer want the updates.
- Recheck the live fare. Always verify the itinerary and current price before booking.
