For many Windows 11 home users, Microsoft Defender is a sensible default: keep its real-time protection enabled, install Windows updates, and be careful with downloads. A third-party antivirus suite is worth considering when you need a particular extra—such as identity monitoring, parental controls, or a bundled VPN—that Defender does not provide. You generally do not get two independent antivirus engines protecting you in real time: when another antivirus is installed and turned on, Defender Antivirus turns off automatically.
Is Microsoft Defender enough for a Windows 11 home PC?
Often, yes. Microsoft says its built-in protection meets many users’ everyday needs when default protections are enabled and Windows is kept current. Defender Antivirus is included with Windows 11 and is designed to provide ongoing malware protection with automatic security-intelligence updates.
That is a practical default, not a promise that any antivirus catches every threat. Antivirus is only one layer: keep Windows and apps updated, treat unexpected links and downloads cautiously, secure your accounts, and maintain backups of important files.
What independent testing says
In AV-TEST’s January–February 2026 consumer evaluation of Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 on Windows 11 Professional (English, 64-bit), Defender scored 100% in each month against the tested zero-day web and email threats. It also scored 100% in each month against the test’s reference set of widespread and prevalent malware discovered in the preceding four weeks. These are results for those defined tests and period, not a guarantee of protection against every attack or a prediction of future performance.

AV-TEST scores protection, performance, and usability separately, with a maximum of six points in each category. A protection percentage alone therefore does not describe every trade-off that matters in daily use.
When does a third-party antivirus make sense?
Consider one if you have a concrete need that Windows’ built-in tools do not meet. Depending on the product and plan, a suite may include features such as identity monitoring, parental controls, or a VPN. Microsoft specifically notes identity monitoring and built-in VPNs as examples of extras some people may want. Availability and included features vary, so check the exact product, plan, and region rather than assuming every suite includes the same package.

- Choose based on a feature you will use. For example, parental controls may matter for a family, while identity monitoring may be useful if its coverage fits your needs.
- Check the bundle’s limits. Confirm what the feature covers, which devices it supports, and whether it is included in the plan you are considering.
- Do not pay for a label alone. If your only requirement is routine malware protection on a well-maintained Windows 11 PC, Defender may already meet it.
How should you compare antivirus test results?
Use results from the same lab, platform, configuration, and test period when comparing products. Different test setups and scoring methods make a single percentage or award an unreliable universal ranking.
| What to compare | What it tells you | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | How products handled the test’s specified threats, which may include web and email exposure or a reference set of known malware. | A lab test represents its defined samples and conditions, not every attack a home user could encounter. |
| False alarms | Whether legitimate files or websites are wrongly blocked, potentially disrupting normal work. | AV-Comparatives says its award decisions take false alarms into account; a protection rate by itself does not capture that trade-off. |
| Performance and usability | How a product scores on separate measures beyond protection. | AV-TEST awards up to six points apiece for protection, performance, and usability. Compare each category, not just the total or protection result. |
| Features and value | Whether the product includes a specific extra you actually need. | Bundles differ by vendor, plan, and region. Verify included features before paying. |
As another example of why results need context, AV-Comparatives’ 2025 Consumer Summary Report gave Microsoft three Advanced+, two Advanced, and one Standard award across the tests it summarized. That tally is not a single protection percentage or a forecast for a later year. Its July–October 2025 Real-World Protection Test also explains that its awards take false alarms into consideration.

What happens to Defender if you install another antivirus?
Microsoft Learn states: “If you install and turn on another antivirus app, Microsoft Defender Antivirus turns off automatically.” This is expected Windows behavior. Do not assume that installing a second product means both antivirus engines are independently providing full real-time protection.
- After installing and enabling another antivirus, open the Windows Security app.
- Open Virus & threat protection and check which antivirus provider is active.
- If you switch products or uninstall one, return to Windows Security and confirm the provider and protection status shown there.
Which built-in Windows Security settings are useful?
Windows Security is more than the antivirus engine. Microsoft Support says it can show current threats and scan history, start quick or full scans, and provide access to antivirus settings and security-intelligence updates.

Review threats and run a scan
Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection to review the status shown and available scan options. A quick scan and a full scan are different choices; use the options presented there when you need to scan the device.
Consider Controlled folder access
Controlled folder access is a ransomware-protection feature that can stop unknown apps from changing files in protected folders. It can affect legitimate apps that need to edit those files, so review access prompts and settings carefully.

Use exclusions sparingly
Adding a Defender exclusion means real-time protection no longer checks the excluded files or locations. Avoid broad exclusions; use one only when necessary and limit its scope.
Quick Recap
So, which should you use?
- Use Microsoft Defender if you want routine malware protection on a Windows 11 home PC, have no specific need for a paid suite’s extra features, and keep Windows security protections enabled.
- Consider third-party antivirus if a particular included feature—such as identity monitoring, parental controls, or a bundled VPN—meets a real need that your current setup does not.
- After changing products, verify the active provider in Windows Security instead of assuming Defender and the new app are both active.
