How to Play the Original Halo on PS5, Android, or in a Browser

You can play community versions of the original Halo: Combat Evolved in a browser or on Android; community builds have also been reported for PS4 and PS5, but the PlayStation route requires a jailbroken console. None of these is an official PlayStation release. For a more supported option, Halo: The Master Chief Collection includes Combat Evolved Anniversary, while Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake—not the untouched 2001 Xbox game.

Choose the version you mean

“Original Halo” can mean the 2001 original Xbox release of Halo: Combat Evolved, its later Anniversary edition, or a newer remake. The community routes below aim to run the original game, but they involve varying levels of setup and uncertainty. Microsoft’s official collection and the announced remake are easier to access on supported platforms, but they are different products.

Play Halo CE in a browser

PC Gamer reported a browser rendition shared by developer Mitchell Hynes. It loads the required content before play and supports mouse and keyboard. To play with others, create a room and share its link: the report describes peer-to-peer sessions and no matchmaking, so the host’s connection can affect the experience. This is a community project, not an officially supported distribution service.

Expect availability to be less predictable than a conventional game service. PC Gamer reported that the site briefly went down after heavy traffic and a phishing flag, then returned. The same report attributed a claim of nearly 20,000 games played across 115 countries in five hours to the developer; that is a developer-reported figure, not an independently audited statistic. The project post quoted in the report was titled “HALO CE (XBOX) IN THE BROWSER!”

Run the Android port

The public instructions for theLlamaNet’s halo-ce-android project require you to provide an Xbox Halo: Combat Evolved disc image that you own, in .iso or .xiso format. The app extracts the maps/ directory—approximately 1.8 GB according to the repository instructions observed October 4, 2026—when you first launch it, then starts the game. Do not download an unauthorized game image; consult the project documentation and laws that apply where you live.

The repository describes the current source layout as Android-only. It says saved games, maps, logs, and configuration files are kept under the Android app data path, and that inherited system-link networking supports LAN play and internet invite links. Read the project’s current instructions for installation and compatibility details, which may change.

What the PS5 community route requires

Windows Central’s October 1, 2026 report says community builds extend to PS4 and PS5 and require a jailbroken console. This is not an official PlayStation release, and the report does not establish compatible firmware versions, a current setup guide, or the legal status of every component. Because jailbreak procedures and builds are console- and project-specific, verify current instructions and risks before proceeding; do not assume a build works on your firmware.

Use xemu to emulate original Xbox software

xemu’s required-files documentation lists an MCPX boot ROM, flash ROM/BIOS, and hard-disk image. xemu is an emulator, not a one-click download of Halo. Its documentation identifies some system files as copyrighted and describes dumping them from a physical Xbox as the lawful acquisition method. The prebuilt hard-disk image offered by the project contains a basic unsigned dashboard, not Microsoft’s official dashboard.

The xemu Halo compatibility page labels the game “Playable,” based on a volunteer’s particular computer setup. The project cautions that compatibility reports reflect the current emulator version and the reporter’s setup, so the label is a useful signal rather than a guarantee for every computer.

Choose an official alternative if reliability matters more

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Microsoft’s Xbox listing for The Master Chief Collection includes Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and says the collection contains maps from the original Combat Evolved. It also lists cloud gaming. Xbox says online multiplayer requires Game Pass Core; subscription and cloud terms can change. This is an official way to play a version of the campaign and access original-game maps, but it is not the original Xbox release.

Halo: Campaign Evolved

Xbox Wire describes Halo: Campaign Evolved as a remake of the original campaign, announced for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, PS5, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It describes two-player local split-screen on console and up to four-player online co-op. These are announcement details, not confirmation of current release availability or final terms; check the Xbox Wire announcement for updates. Executive Producer Damon Conn is quoted there: “We wanted to start where it all began, with the original campaign that defined Halo.”
