Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore a home camera goes online, secure its account and your Wi-Fi, install available updates, and decide exactly what it may capture, record, store, and share. The settings below apply to indoor, outdoor, pet, and doorbell cameras, though labels and options vary by model, app, region, and subscription.
Before you install: check what the camera does with your data
Review the manufacturer’s documentation before choosing a camera. Look for clear information about encryption for account details, live streams, and saved clips; two-factor authentication; household and guest permissions; remote-viewing controls; and whether video is stored locally, in the cloud, or both. If the encryption details are unclear, ask the manufacturer rather than assuming the camera is protected. The Federal Trade Commission’s camera guidance recommends checking security features before purchase.
“Local” and “cloud” describe different storage arrangements, not a guarantee that a camera is private or insecure. Check separately what is transmitted for live viewing, what is retained as a recording, and who can access each. For example, Apple says HomeKit camera streams are encrypted between the camera and Apple devices, and describes HomeKit Secure Video as designed to let users process and view clips without exposing video content to Apple or a third party. That description applies to Apple’s system, not every camera or cloud service. See Apple’s HomeKit camera security documentation.
Choose the camera’s view before enabling recording
Aim the camera at the area it needs to monitor, not at more of your home or surroundings than necessary. Avoid private spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms unless there is a compelling reason and everyone affected understands the setup. The FTC specifically advises considering privacy when a remote camera can show a private area such as a bedroom.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
Check the frame for neighboring property, shared hallways, visitors, and workers. Recording audio or using face recognition may raise additional local privacy requirements. Rules vary by location, and the sources cited here do not establish one rule for every jurisdiction; check the requirements that apply where you live before using those features.
Secure the camera account and home network
Replace default credentials and enable two-factor authentication
- Change any default username or password. Use a strong password that you do not reuse for another account.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for the camera account or associated cloud account if it is offered.
- Give administrator rights only to people who need to change settings. Use narrower viewing permissions for other household members or guests if the camera supports them.
The FTC recommends these account safeguards in its camera guidance and its guide to securing internet-connected devices at home.

Secure the router and consider a separate camera network
- Replace the router’s default administration credentials, enable Wi-Fi encryption, and install router software updates.
- Check whether your router supports a guest network or another way to separate cameras from computers and printers. A separate network can limit a camera’s access to other devices if a device or the main network is compromised.
- Use the router maker’s instructions for the relevant setting; menu names and capabilities differ. A new router is relevant only if your current one cannot provide the separation you want.
These are FTC recommendations, not a requirement that every home use a particular network setup. See the FTC’s camera guidance and connected-device guidance.
Update the camera, app, and router
Before relying on the camera, install available firmware and app updates. Enable automatic updates if offered; otherwise, check the manufacturer’s support page periodically. Updates can fix security bugs as well as other problems. Keep the router’s software current too, as recommended by the FTC in its camera guidance and connected-device guidance.

Support commitments are maker- and model-specific. Google says its Nest connected home devices receive automatic security updates for at least five years from the date Google begins selling each device in the US Google Store. The commitment covers known critical issues that can be resolved through a remote software update. Check Google’s current security-update information and model list; do not assume the same period applies to other brands.

- Microphone and audio: Turn audio recording off if it is not needed.
- Live viewing and remote access: Disable remote viewing when you do not need it if the camera offers that control. Live access and retained recordings may have separate settings.
- Recording mode: Decide whether you need continuous recording, event clips, or no recording. Motion and sound detection can also be configured separately.
- Storage and retention: Check whether clips go to local storage, cloud storage, or both, and choose the shortest retention period that meets your needs.
- Access history: If logs are available, look for unfamiliar IP addresses or access times that do not match normal use, as the FTC advises in its connected-device guidance.
Settings and retention depend on the product and service. Google says Nest camera video and audio are processed according to the user’s instructions, configuration, and settings; recordings may be kept for the selected subscription period. Its privacy documentation gives examples of 5-, 10-, 30-, or 60-day recording periods, but these are examples for its services, not general periods for home cameras. Check the controls and terms for your own model and plan in the Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub.

Familiar-face or other biometric features are optional choices, not prerequisites for using a camera. Enable them only if they serve a clear need and you understand how the feature handles face data. Google advises checking local privacy laws and getting a person’s permission before saving face data where required. Its documentation says availability may depend on location and subscription, and that storage differs between earlier models set up in the Nest app and newer models set up in Google Home. These details apply to the documented Google products; check the controls for your own camera. See Google’s familiar-face help and the Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub.

Limit household and guest access
Review the camera’s access list before sharing it. Remove former household members and devices that no longer need access. Where available, assign view-only roles rather than administrator rights, and use time-limited access for a guest or caretaker if that option exists. Permission controls vary by camera; the FTC recommends checking who can watch and when in its camera guidance.
Also consider physical access. Google notes that people who can enter a home may be able to interact with device camera or microphone controls. If your camera has a built-in shutter, privacy mode, or power control, use it when you do not want the camera active. A generic lens cover may not fit or work correctly; use one only if the camera maker specifies compatibility. See the Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub.
