The right fit depends on whether you already know what you want to fly or would rather discover deals from a region. The available official information does not establish which service sends faster alerts, covers more routes, or saves travelers more money.
How the alert services differ
These services describe different ways to look for airfare. Google Flights lets you set up alerts around a route, dates, or a selected flight. Matt’s Flights describes email deal alerts based on the departure regions a user chooses. Its homepage also describes a premium option that provides access to Matt and the team for fare research. See Matt’s Flights’ official homepage for its current service description.
That distinction matters: a route tracker is suited to watching a trip you have in mind, while regional deal emails may be more useful when you are open to destinations or dates suggested by a deal. The Matt’s Flights page reviewed does not specify route-by-route monitoring, alert frequency, or fare filters in enough detail to compare those features directly with Google’s tracker.
What Google Flights lets you track
Google’s Help documentation describes three tracking approaches: a route for searched dates, a particular flight selected from search results, and a route with flexible “Any dates” tracking. You can start from Google Flights’ Tracked Flights page; Google says you need to sign in to a Google Account to track flights and receive notifications.

Fixed dates or a specific flight
For a route searched with particular dates, Google says it can email when the tracked price changes significantly. You can also select a specific flight and turn on tracking, which is useful when the itinerary—not just the origin and destination—is important. Google documents these controls in Track flights & prices.
Flexible dates
Google’s Help page says “Any dates” tracking emails when the route’s minimum price drops significantly over a month. If there is no sufficiently large drop, it says it sends a regular email with the best available flight prices. Google’s 2024 product blog describes “Any dates” deals as covering the next three to six months, and also says users can track specific dates or an exact itinerary. Those are descriptions from different Google sources, not a promise that a deal or alert will appear throughout that time window. See Google’s 2024 overview of ways to save with Google Travel.

Price-rise and expiring-fare notices
Google also says it may notify users when a tracked route is likely to become more expensive, or when a current fare is about to expire and a replacement is likely to cost more. These are product behaviors Google describes, not guarantees that a particular warning will arrive or that a fare will remain available.
Managing tracked routes
Google says users can find tracked routes, pause email notifications, or remove routes through Tracked Flights. That gives a traveler a documented way to manage alerts once a search is no longer relevant.

If you have a particular trip to watch, start with Google’s route- or flight-specific controls. If you are open to deals from selected departure regions—or value the expert assistance the vendor describes—consider Matt’s Flights. Using both approaches is also reasonable if you want regional deal discovery alongside monitoring a known trip; the available descriptions do not show that either service replaces the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the comparison cannot establish
The official pages reviewed do not provide a controlled head-to-head test or independent data showing which service is faster, covers more routes, sends more useful alerts, or produces greater savings. Matt’s Flights displays promotional savings language, but its homepage does not provide a dated, independently verifiable method for comparing savings or alert performance with Google Flights. Treat any such figures as vendor promotion, not comparative proof.
