If Netflix looks dim in a browser, first raise the display’s brightness and check its HDR settings. On Windows, verify that HDR video streaming is supported and enabled for the screen playing Netflix; some SDR apps can look darker on an HDR display. If the picture is dim in only one browser, compare the same scene in another browser Netflix currently supports for your operating system before changing anything else.

Start with the display brightness

Raise the brightness using your laptop’s display controls or monitor buttons, and turn off any screen mode that visibly reduces brightness, such as an energy-saving mode. The control varies by device; Netflix recommends consulting the device maker for instructions specific to its brightness settings. Netflix’s general guidance for a title that is not bright enough is to check the device’s brightness and HDR settings: Netflix Help Center: Video is too dim or dark.

Check whether the issue affects one title, one browser, or every display

Before changing settings, note whether the dimness appears in one show or movie, all Netflix content, one browser, or one connected screen. Compare the same scene on the same screen, keeping the browser and display settings constant except for the one condition you are testing. If another supported browser looks different, that points to a browser or playback-path difference, but does not identify its cause.

  • One title only: Compare another scene or title to see whether the appearance is limited to that content.
  • One browser only: Test another browser that Netflix supports on your operating system.
  • One screen only: Compare the same playback on another connected display, if available.
  • HDR or power state: On Windows, compare HDR enabled versus disabled and plugged-in versus battery operation, changing one condition at a time.

On Windows, inspect the HDR settings for the screen in use

Windows HDR playback depends on the display, system settings, playback software, graphics capability, and required codecs. The exact requirements depend on the computer. Microsoft’s Windows guidance says streaming HDR requires a display optimized for HDR video and HDR video streaming enabled. Its settings and troubleshooting steps apply to Windows, not to every browser or operating system: Microsoft: Stream HDR video on Windows.

  1. Open Settings and go to System > Display.
  2. Select the display where Netflix is playing, then open its HDR settings.
  3. Check whether Windows identifies the display as supporting HDR video streaming and whether the relevant streaming option is enabled.
  4. If you change a setting, restart Netflix playback to let the stream selection update.

Microsoft notes that a stream moved to a display that is not optimized for HDR may switch to SDR. On some built-in displays, full-screen behavior, battery options, or Battery saver can also affect HDR playback. Check the options shown for your device rather than assuming every Windows PC exposes identical controls.

If Netflix looks dark only when Windows HDR is enabled

Some SDR apps can appear darker on an HDR display than other SDR apps. Microsoft suggests testing the app on an SDR display when one is available, or adjusting the Windows SDR/HDR content brightness setting for the display arrangement. The setting names and available controls can vary by Windows version and display. Restart the app if a change does not take effect.

Increasing SDR brightness can affect detail in dark scenes, so adjust it gradually and judge the result in the same scene. If the picture is already dim with HDR disabled, this SDR/HDR interaction may not explain the problem.

Confirm HDR playback requirements rather than forcing HDR

Netflix’s HDR requirements for Windows are conditional: they include a qualifying plan and playback-quality setting, a supported browser or app, supported graphics and an HDR-capable display, and HEVC on some systems. Windows also has a separate stream-HDR setting. Netflix lists a connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher among its Windows HDR system requirements; this is a technical requirement, not a measure of how common dim playback is. Check Netflix’s current requirements for your setup before treating HDR as an available playback mode: Netflix: Windows computer requirements for Ultra HD and HDR.

HDR is not a universal fix for a dim picture. If your display or playback path does not meet the applicable requirements, forcing HDR settings may not help; compare HDR and SDR behavior only where your device supports those options.

Compare browsers using Netflix’s current support list

Netflix browser support and maximum resolution vary by operating system and can change. Its current Windows requirements list Edge and Chrome up to Ultra HD under stated conditions, while Firefox and Opera are listed up to Full HD; Netflix lists Edge and the Windows app for HDR. Resolution limits do not tell you whether a picture will look bright, and a browser’s maximum resolution is not the same thing as HDR support.

For other operating systems, use Netflix’s supported-browser list to confirm the required browser version and maximum resolution for that platform: Netflix: Supported browsers and system requirements. When comparing browsers, keep the scene, display, HDR state, and power condition the same. A difference between browsers narrows the diagnosis but does not prove that the browser itself is the underlying cause.

Update software, then get device-specific help

If the display and HDR checks do not resolve the dimness, install available updates for the browser, operating system, and graphics driver using their official update sources. If Windows HDR requirements remain unclear, Netflix advises contacting the computer or display manufacturer to check whether the system and display meet them.
