Samsung Galaxy’s Modes, Routines, Edge panels, and Secure Folder serve different purposes: modes apply a chosen set of settings, routines automate actions when conditions are met, Edge panels provide quick shortcuts, and Secure Folder keeps selected apps and content behind a separate lock. Their availability and menu names vary by model and software version, so use the paths below as a guide and search Settings if a label differs.
Which Galaxy feature should you use?

How do I set up Modes and Routines on my Samsung Galaxy?
On supported versions, open Settings > Modes and Routines. The screen has separate tabs for Modes and Routines. Samsung’s current US instructions use this route, but device, carrier, software, and app versions can change menu names or locations.
Create a routine on a Samsung phone
- In Settings > Modes and Routines, open the Routines tab.
- Tap Add.
- Under If, choose the condition that should trigger the routine.
- Under Then, choose the action or actions to run when that condition is met.
- Review the choices and save. To change it later, return to the Routines tab and select the routine to edit.
You can also start with a suggested routine and adjust its condition or actions. A routine is useful when you want the phone to perform chosen actions automatically; a mode is for applying a contextual configuration.
Configure a mode
- Open Settings > Modes and Routines, then select Modes.
- Choose a preset mode and follow its setup prompts, or create a custom mode.
- For a custom mode, set its name, color, and icon.
- Add conditions if you want the mode to activate automatically, and choose any focus actions you need, such as Do not disturb or restricting app use.
- To access a configured mode quickly, open Quick Settings and tap Modes. The precise Quick Settings layout can differ by software version.
If Routines is not where you expect
Samsung Ireland’s guide says Routines are in Settings > Modes and Routines on Android 13 and Android 14, while Android 11 and Android 12 use the Bixby Routines app. This is version guidance, not a guarantee for every Galaxy model; Samsung notes that paths and layouts can vary by device, software, and app version.

How do I turn on Edge panels?
- Open Settings > Display > Edge panels.
- Turn on Edge panels.
- Open the panel selection screen and select the panels you want, or deselect panels you do not use. Samsung says up to ten panels can be selected.
- Adjust the handle settings—such as position, size, color, and transparency—so the swipe target suits your screen and grip.
How do I add apps to the Edge panel?
In the Edge panels settings, select the Apps panel and edit its contents. Add or remove apps and reorder them to put frequently used shortcuts where they are easiest to reach. To turn the feature off, return to Settings > Display > Edge panels and disable it.
Some additional panels can be downloaded from Galaxy Store. Samsung notes that some may cost money and some devices may not support downloads; downloading extra panels is optional, not required to use the built-in feature.

How do I set up Secure Folder on my Galaxy?
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder. This is the route in Samsung Canada’s guide; your menu labels may differ.
- Follow the prompts to set up Secure Folder and choose its passcode or biometric lock.
- Move or add the apps and private content you want to keep inside the protected space.
- Choose an automatic locking preference in Secure Folder settings, or use Lock and exit when you want to close and lock it manually.
Samsung notes that Lock and exit may require the latest One UI 8 version on the device covered by its instructions, so the option may not appear on every Galaxy.
Decide on account-based recovery during setup
When choosing the security method, consider whether to enable Reset with Samsung account. Samsung warns that if this recovery option was not enabled, a forgotten PIN, password, or pattern may not be recoverable; removing and recreating Secure Folder may be the only option. Keep the credentials you choose safe.

What to check when a feature or menu is missing
- Check the software version and model: Samsung says feature availability and menu paths can depend on device, carrier, software, or app version.
- Search Settings for the feature name: Try “Modes and Routines,” “Edge panels,” or “Secure Folder” if the documented path does not match your phone.
- For Edge panels, confirm model support: Samsung says the feature is not available on every device or software version.
- For Secure Folder recovery, distinguish setup from reset: Account-based reset must have been enabled when choosing the security method to provide the recovery route Samsung describes.
