Your favorite Pokémon generation is a useful starting point, but it does not automatically identify the right game. First decide whether you want that generation’s region or Pokémon, then match it to the kind of adventure you want: a classic journey, open-world exploration, research-focused catching, or a story built around a city and Mega Evolution. Check the exact console edition before buying.
What does “liking a generation” mean to you?
A generation preference can point to different things: the Pokémon you remember, the region you want to revisit, a particular story era, or mechanics you enjoyed. Those preferences do not always lead to the same game. A remake revisits an earlier game, while a Legends title can use a familiar region in a different era and with a different style of play.

Use your favorite generation to narrow the setting and roster, then choose by gameplay, story structure, and platform. The examples below are representative options, not a complete guide to every generation or every currently available Pokémon game.
Which Pokémon game should you play if you like a particular region?
Kanto: Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee!
Choose Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! if the appeal is returning to classic Kanto in a more approachable format. The Pokémon Company describes the games as reimaginings of the original adventures, with modern graphics and motion-based Poké Ball throwing controls. Its parent guide calls them an approachable entry point, while the official game page says they also retain depth for veteran Trainers. This is a fit for players open to motion-based catching rather than looking for a standard retelling with unchanged mechanics. Read the Pokémon parent guide to Pokémon video games and see the official Let’s Go page.

Paldea: Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet
Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want an open-world adventure with several goals instead of a single main journey. The Pokémon Company describes them as the series’ first open-world entries and identifies three story goals: become Champion, track down Titan Pokémon, and battle Team Star. Its parent guide also describes exploring with friends and family. That makes these games a natural match if you like the Paldea setting and want to pursue multiple objectives while exploring. The cited descriptions do not establish the differences between the paired versions, so check the specific edition before choosing. See the official parent guide.
Sinnoh: choose between a remake and a past-era adventure
If Sinnoh is the draw, first decide whether you want a remake of its familiar story or a distinct adventure set in the region’s past.

- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
- For the original Diamond and Pearl storyline: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl are described by The Pokémon Company as faithful remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl.
- For research and catching in historic Sinnoh: Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in a long-gone era of the region. Its official site emphasizes surveying, catching, and researching wild Pokémon as you work to complete the region’s first Pokédex.
These are not interchangeable ways to experience the same game: one pair remakes earlier titles, while Legends: Arceus offers a different premise and focus. Read The Pokémon Company’s February 26, 2021 announcement and visit the official Legends: Arceus page.
Kalos and Lumiose City: Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Choose Pokémon Legends: Z-A if you want a story set in Lumiose City, an emphasis on Mega Evolution, and a different approach to battling. The official page describes those elements but does not present the game as a traditional journey through all of Kalos. As of October 4, 2026, its purchase page lists Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 editions through Nintendo eShop, My Nintendo Store, and participating retailers. See the official Legends: Z-A page.

Choose by the kind of play you want
The following is editorial guidance based on the official product descriptions, not a ranking of game quality.
| What you want | Consider | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Kanto with motion-based catching | Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! | The games revisit the original Kanto adventure and use motion-based Poké Ball throwing controls. |
| Open-world exploration with several goals | Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet | The games feature an open-world format and three goals: Champion, Titan Pokémon, and Team Star. |
| Surveying and researching Pokémon in a past era | Pokémon Legends: Arceus | The official description centers on surveying, catching, and researching in historic Sinnoh. |
| Lumiose City, Mega Evolution, and a different battle style | Pokémon Legends: Z-A | The official description highlights those features and a Lumiose City setting. |
| A remake of the Diamond and Pearl adventure | Pokémon Brilliant Diamond or Pokémon Shining Pearl | The Pokémon Company describes them as faithful remakes of the original games. |
If you are torn between options, prioritize the gameplay structure you want over the generation number. A familiar region can feel very different when the game changes its era, catching focus, or story format.
Rank #4
- Revisit the Sinnoh region from the original Pokémon Pearl Version game and set off to try and become the Champion of the Pokémon League
- The Pokémon Shining Pearl game brings new life to this remade classic with added features

- Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
- A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system
Check the console edition before buying
Do not assume a Pokémon title works on every Nintendo console. For Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the official release notice dated May 27, 2025 gave October 16, 2025 as its release date and described two editions: a Nintendo Switch edition and a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It says the Switch 2 Edition offers improved graphics and frame rates, that a Switch copy can be upgraded with an upgrade pack, and that the Switch 2 Edition can also be played on Switch with content the same as the Switch software. Confirm the current edition and availability for your region before purchase. Read the official release notice.
- Confirm the title and edition you intend to buy.
- Check that edition’s platform listing for your console and region.
- For paired versions, verify any version-specific differences on the official listing before choosing between them.
The official pages cited here do not provide a complete current platform-compatibility chart for every Pokémon game. Verify compatibility for the individual title rather than inferring it from another game in the series.
