Yes—an old CPU can still be safe to use. Its age alone does not determine security. What matters is whether the whole PC can run an operating-system release that still receives security updates, and whether its manufacturer continues to support essential firmware and drivers. A computer running unsupported Windows may keep working, but it no longer gets Microsoft security fixes for that release and is more vulnerable.
Why CPU age alone does not answer the safety question
A processor does not become unsafe on a particular birthday. Instead, age can matter indirectly: an older PC may not meet the hardware requirements for a currently supported operating system, or its maker may have stopped providing firmware and driver updates. These are separate checks from whether the CPU itself still functions.
For Windows 11, processor compatibility is one of the system requirements. Microsoft recommends checking the specific PC with PC Health Check or Windows Update rather than assuming that a processor’s age—or a processor appearing on a supported list—settles the question for the complete system. Compatibility also does not establish that the PC maker still supplies BIOS, microcode, chipset, or other driver support.
Check the installed Windows release and its support status
Support applies to a particular Windows version and edition, not just to “Windows” in general. Verify the release and edition installed on the PC, then compare them with Microsoft’s servicing dates. Windows 11 releases also have their own edition-specific end-of-update dates, so having Windows 11 does not by itself prove that the installed release is still receiving updates.

Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says the listed Windows 10 editions no longer receive security updates after that date, unless an applicable extended-security-update arrangement covers the device.
Windows 10 ESU is a short-term bridge, not ongoing support
As of October 4, 2026, eligible personal-use devices running Windows 10 22H2 can receive critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026 if enrolled in Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Enrollment terms and available options vary by region; check the enrollment flow in the device’s Settings to see what is available for that PC.

Microsoft lists consumer enrollment options that include syncing PC settings at no additional charge, redeeming Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time $30 USD purchase plus applicable tax. These options are not universal: regional availability and eligibility apply. ESU extends updates only through the stated date, so it is not a long-term replacement for using a supported Windows release.
Windows 10 can continue to function after its regular support ends. The date marks the end of a support and update channel, not a switch that instantly makes a computer stop working or become compromised. The security concern is that, without applicable updates, newly discovered vulnerabilities may remain unfixed. Microsoft also cautions that antivirus software alone is not enough to compensate for missing regular operating-system security updates.

Choose an option based on the PC’s support status

For a specific verdict, the useful details are the PC model, CPU model, Windows edition and version, and the manufacturer’s update history. Without those, no general CPU-age cutoff or device-specific firmware-support answer can be established.

What to do if your PC is not eligible for a supported Windows release
- Identify the installed Windows edition and version. Check the PC’s Windows information and compare that exact release and edition with Microsoft’s current servicing dates.
- Check the exact PC for Windows 11 eligibility. Use Microsoft PC Health Check or the eligibility information in Windows Update. Processor support is only one part of the system requirements.
- Check the PC maker’s support for the exact model. Look for current firmware and driver updates from the manufacturer; an eligible processor alone does not confirm continuing support for the rest of the PC.
- If it is eligible, move to a supported release and keep it updated. Confirm that updates continue to install and that the installed release has not itself reached its end-of-update date.
- If using Windows 10 temporarily, verify ESU coverage. Confirm eligibility and enrollment on the device, and plan for the end of the stated ESU period rather than treating it as permanent protection.
- If no supported operating system is available for the PC, consider replacement. Choose a computer whose precise OS release, processor, and manufacturer support meet your needs.
