DisplayPort is useful when you want to run multiple monitors from one connection using Multi-Stream Transport (MST), but every part of that setup—the computer, operating system, monitors, and available bandwidth—must support it.
HDMI or DisplayPort: which should you use for two monitors?
Choose based on the connection paths your computer and monitors support, not on a claim that one connector is always better. With two independent outputs, connect one monitor to each. Check the computer’s graphics specifications for its maximum display count and the resolution and refresh rate supported by each output.
If you want one DisplayPort connection to serve both screens, DisplayPort MST may allow an MST hub or a compatible monitor daisy chain. HDMI is not the daisy-chain route in Dell’s guidance. That limitation is separate from connecting two monitors directly to two computer outputs.
What DisplayPort MST does
DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST), available with DisplayPort 1.2 and newer, carries multiple display signals through one DisplayPort connection. Intel describes two common arrangements:

- MST hub: A hub splits a compatible DisplayPort connection into multiple video outputs.
- Daisy chain: Connect the computer to a primary monitor, then connect that monitor to another display in the chain.
A DisplayPort connector alone does not prove that a computer supports MST. Check the computer or graphics specifications, or confirm with its manufacturer. For a daisy chain, the primary monitor must also support MST and have an output that forwards the connection; only selected monitors offer this feature. Check the monitor manual for its supported setup and any required on-screen setting. Intel’s MST guidance and Dell’s daisy-chain guide explain the requirements.
Can you daisy-chain two or more monitors with HDMI?
Dell’s support guidance says: “No, daisy chain setup is not supported over HDMI.” Its documented daisy-chain paths use DisplayPort MST, USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode, or Thunderbolt 3 or higher. This does not prevent you from using HDMI to connect a monitor directly to a computer, or from using separate HDMI outputs for separate monitors.

An HDMI splitter should not be assumed to create two independent extended desktops. Check the specific splitter’s documentation to see whether it supports separate extended displays or duplicates one source signal.
What to check before choosing a setup
- Computer and GPU: Confirm the number of supported displays, the available outputs, and the resolution and refresh rate supported for the monitors you plan to use.
- USB-C or Thunderbolt ports: The USB-C connector shape alone does not establish video support. Verify that the exact port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt video and that the dock or adapter supports your intended display count and modes.
- Monitors: For a daisy chain, confirm that the primary monitor supports MST and has the appropriate video output. Check its manual for any MST setting.
- Operating system: Dell and EIZO state that macOS does not support extended-display daisy chaining through DisplayPort MST. This does not mean every Mac is limited to one external screen; check the exact Mac model and use a multi-display arrangement it supports.
- Drivers and settings: Dell recommends current graphics drivers and notes that some monitors require MST to be enabled in their on-screen settings.
- Display modes and bandwidth: The available bandwidth is shared across the displays, so the combination of monitor count, resolution, and refresh rate depends on the entire setup.
Why isn’t the second monitor displaying?
- Check the connection path. Confirm each display is connected to a supported computer output, or verify that the computer supports MST if using one DisplayPort connection for multiple screens.
- Check the monitor and hub. For a chain, confirm MST support and the correct forwarding output on the primary monitor. For a hub or dock, verify its supported display modes and compatibility with the computer.
- Check operating-system and display settings. Make sure the system is set to extend rather than mirror the desktop if you want separate workspaces. On a supported MST monitor, enable MST in its on-screen menu if the manual requires it.
- Update graphics drivers. Dell recommends current graphics drivers for daisy-chain troubleshooting.
- Reduce the display-mode demands. If all connections and settings are correct, try lower resolution or refresh-rate settings. The available bandwidth and device limits may not support the original combination.
Bandwidth examples are device-specific
EIZO states that DisplayPort 1.2 has a bandwidth of 21.6 Gbps. That figure is not a guarantee of a particular two-monitor resolution or refresh rate; the usable modes depend on the source, monitors, connection path, and total bandwidth demand.

Logitech gives these examples for its Logi Dock: one monitor at 4K and 60 Hz, two at 4K and 30 Hz, four at 1080p and 60 Hz, or six at 720p and 60 Hz. Logitech says these combinations were tested with a limited set of equipment and are not guaranteed for every computer and monitor pairing. Treat them as Logi Dock examples, not universal DisplayPort limits. EIZO’s daisy-chain overview and Logitech’s Logi Dock display configurations provide the cited figures and qualifications.

Which connection should you choose?
- Two supported computer outputs available: Connect each monitor directly using a suitable HDMI or DisplayPort output.
- One DisplayPort output, separate displays wanted: Consider an MST hub or a compatible daisy chain only after confirming source, operating-system, monitor, and bandwidth support.
- Laptop with USB-C or Thunderbolt: Verify the exact port’s video capability and the dock’s supported displays and modes before relying on it.
- Mac and an MST chain: Choose another multi-display path supported by the specific Mac model rather than extended DisplayPort MST daisy chaining.
- HDMI splitter: Check whether the particular product extends to independent displays or only mirrors the source.
