Open the DEX through its verified official website, choose Connect, select your wallet or WalletConnect, then approve the connection in the wallet app. Treat any later swap signature or token approval as a separate decision.
Connect your wallet to a DEX
- Open the DEX from a trusted official link. Check the domain carefully before connecting; a lookalike site can imitate a real exchange.
- Select the DEX’s Connect control. Choose your installed wallet from the list. If it is not listed, choose WalletConnect if the DEX supports it.
- Approve the connection in your wallet. Check that the site and requested account are the ones you expect before confirming. On mobile, the DEX may direct you to WalletConnect or to the wallet’s in-app browser.
- Review any later prompts separately. A swap may involve a token approval and then a transaction signature. Inspect each prompt before approving it.
For example, Uniswap’s instructions use Connect, followed by choosing a wallet and approving the connection in the wallet; its mobile instructions also cover WalletConnect and in-app browser options. Other DEX interfaces may differ. Uniswap’s wallet connection instructions.
What connecting does—and does not—allow
A connection generally lets the DEX view information such as your wallet balance and suggest transactions. It does not, by itself, let the DEX move your assets. Moving assets requires you to sign a transaction in your wallet. MetaMask explains what a dapp connection permits.
A token approval is a separate smart-contract permission. It can allow a specified spender contract to move the approved token, up to the amount allowed. Before signing, check the token, spender and amount shown in your wallet. If the wallet or DEX offers an amount control, avoid granting a larger allowance than you need. Disconnecting a DEX from your wallet does not revoke token approvals already granted. Those allowances are distinct from the site connection. MetaMask’s guide to token approvals.
When a DEX might legitimately ask for your seed phrase
It should not ask for your SRP to connect. MetaMask says to never share a Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with a person, website or supposed support representative. Its guidance identifies wallet setup confirmation and restoring a wallet on a new or fresh installation—or resetting access—as limited situations where entering the SRP may be legitimate. Connecting to a DEX is not one of them. MetaMask states: “We will never ask you to provide your SRP.” MetaMask’s safety guidance.

- Do not type your SRP into a DEX page, pop-up, chat or support form.
- Do not give it to someone who claims they need it to verify, synchronize or unlock your wallet.
- If a page asks for it during a connection, stop. Do not continue on that page.
Check each wallet prompt before signing
A wallet prompt is not automatically safe just because you reached it from a familiar-looking DEX. Pause if the request is unexpected or unclear. Check that the domain and account are correct, and inspect the network, token, spender, amount and transaction details shown by the wallet before approving.
Some wallet tools can display requested permissions, decoded transaction data, or warnings about unverified or potentially malicious contracts. Uniswap says its Wallet and Extension may show these details and warnings. Use them as helpful signals, not as a guarantee that an interaction is safe. Uniswap’s security-alert guidance.

Consider extra signing protection for valuable holdings
A hardware wallet can keep signing keys isolated from the computer or phone used to browse, and requires the device to authorize transactions. It is an optional security measure, not a requirement for connecting to a DEX. It also cannot protect you from approving a malicious transaction on the device. MetaMask recommends considering one for large holdings. MetaMask’s safety guidance.
