Stay out until fire officials say it is safe to re-enter, and do not touch or move a battery or device that may have been burned or exposed to high heat. A lithium-ion battery can reignite after it appears extinguished, and affected products may still pose fire, electrical, or toxic-gas hazards. Only consider ordinary smoke and ash cleanup after officials have cleared the space and the battery hazard has been assessed.

1. Make sure the space and battery are safe before re-entering

Follow instructions from fire officials and local health authorities. If the building has not been cleared, stay out. Do not enter an enclosed space just to open windows if a fire-damaged battery may be inside; gases can accumulate in places such as garages, basements, sheds, and closets. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) advises airing out enclosed spaces, but that does not override an instruction to stay out. Ask incident officials how to handle ventilation safely.

An extinguished fire is not necessarily a safe battery. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) warns that lithium-ion batteries may reignite. Leave and contact emergency services if you notice renewed smoke, cracking, bulging, popping, hissing, venting gas, or rising temperature. Do not try to extinguish or smother a smoking battery yourself.

Do not touch, carry, charge, or otherwise use a product that may have been damaged by fire or high heat. CDPH says fire-nearby electric or hybrid vehicles and home energy-storage systems should be professionally inspected. Its guidance also says not to start, move, tow, or charge a fire-nearby electric or hybrid vehicle, or start or use a fire-nearby home storage system. Follow instructions from local officials for the specific incident.

2. Decide whether cleanup is a DIY job

Use local fire and health department guidance first. Post-fire ash advice is for ordinary residue on a cleared property; it is not a technical procedure for dismantling, moving, or cleaning battery cells or contaminated battery debris.

Light ash on mostly visible surfaces

Washington State Department of Health (DOH) describes limited do-it-yourself cleanup for homes where floors and surfaces remain mostly visible and only a small amount of ash is present. That guidance does not authorize handling damaged batteries, charred battery debris, unknown chemicals, unstable structures, or asbestos.

Ash covers most surfaces or the material is uncertain

If visible ash covers most surfaces, DOH advises taking extra precautions and considering a professional contractor. Seek qualified help as well if you cannot identify what has burned or whether a surface or structure is safe to clean.

3. Clean limited smoke and ash residue carefully

For slight ash on a cleared property, DOH recommends the following protective equipment: shoes or booties, disposable gloves, coveralls, and an N95, N100, or P100 respirator. An N95 does not adequately protect against asbestos; do not treat this list as protection for battery debris or unknown hazardous materials.

  • Damp-wipe surfaces, including walls, with mild detergent. Do not dry-sweep ash with a broom.
  • Mop hard floors with mild detergent and water.
  • Wash soft items that can be cleaned. Thoroughly vacuum affected furniture, drapes, and carpets with a HEPA-type vacuum.
  • Discard porous items that are heavily contaminated and cannot be cleaned easily.

After visible ash has been removed, DOH recommends running a portable air cleaner with both HEPA and carbon filters at its highest setting and replacing the filters after cleanup. Continued use can help reduce lingering particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs); it does not make an unsafe building safe or replace professional remediation for substantial contamination.

4. Ventilate only when outdoor conditions are suitable

Keep windows closed until outdoor cleanup is finished and outdoor air quality has improved. When air quality is good and there is no wind, DOH advises opening windows. Follow current local air-quality and fire-authority instructions if conditions at the incident differ.

5. Do not put fire-damaged batteries in household waste

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them do not belong in household garbage or municipal recycling bins: damage during collection or processing can cause a fire. EPA recommends separate recycling or household hazardous-waste collection for ordinary used batteries.

A battery that burned or may have been heat-damaged is not an ordinary used battery. Do not touch or transport it, and do not apply routine advice such as taping terminals or bagging individual batteries. Ask incident officials, the manufacturer, or your local hazardous-waste program how that particular item should be handled. Acceptance rules and safe collection options vary by location.

EPA reported that more than 240 fires at 64 waste-management facilities between 2013 and 2020 were caused by lithium-ion batteries. That historical finding was based on publicly available news sources; it is not a current annual count. In a September 8, 2026 cleanup update about the Moss Landing facility, EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Mike Martucci said: “Lithium-ion battery fires can produce hydrogen fluoride and other flammable or toxic gases.” That general hazard statement does not establish what gases or exposure levels are present in a particular home.
