Lithium iron phosphate (LFP, or LiFePO4) batteries are lithium-ion batteries, not a separate alternative to them. Compared with some other lithium-ion chemistries—particularly nickel manganese cobalt (NMC/NCM)—LFP has shown a less severe response in certain abuse tests, but it is not fireproof and the evidence does not establish lower real-world fire rates. The practical risk depends on the cell, test or use conditions, battery protections, and installation.
What “lithium-ion vs. LFP” actually means
Lithium-ion is the battery family; LFP is one of its cathode chemistries. The comparison people usually intend is LFP versus another lithium-ion chemistry, often NMC or NCM. Those names refer to related nickel-manganese-cobalt cathode formulations.
That distinction matters because “safer” can mean different things: whether a cell enters thermal runaway, how violently it vents or burns, how hot it gets, or whether a failure spreads to nearby cells. A result for one measure does not automatically answer the others.
What comparative tests show—and what they do not
Overcharge testing found a trade-off
A 2021 study compared selected large-format commercial LFP and NCM cells under a specified overcharge condition. In that test, thermal runaway began earlier in the LFP cell. After onset, however, its response was milder and its maximum temperature was lower than those of the tested NCM cells. The NCM cells caught fire or exploded; the tested LFP cell released substantial smoke without fire. These are findings about those cells and that protocol, not a universal ranking of battery safety. Fire remains possible with LFP
A separate 2024 fire-and-smoke study examined LFP and NMC at cell, module, and battery scales. It recorded an LFP module fire in one tested configuration. The outcomes varied with scale and setup, so that result does not mean every LFP system will catch fire—but it does rule out treating the chemistry as inherently fireproof. Abuse-test results are not incident rates
The available studies describe controlled experimental outcomes, not how often batteries in homes, vehicles, or other installations catch fire. The consulted sources provide no reliable population-level comparison of real-world LFP and NMC/NCM fire incidence. It would be misleading to convert a cell test into a percentage or a general probability for a consumer product.

Why chemistry alone cannot determine safety
How a battery behaves depends on more than its cathode. Relevant factors include cell format and capacity, state of charge, damage, manufacturing quality, the battery-management and thermal-management systems, and the enclosure and installation. A cell-level result may not predict how a module or complete system behaves: the number and arrangement of cells, containment, and protective design can change both the likelihood of propagation and the consequences.

- Product and chemistry: exact cell or system, cathode chemistry, format, and capacity.
- Test conditions: state of charge, abuse trigger, and protocol.
- Reported endpoint: venting, thermal runaway, flame, explosion, peak temperature, or propagation.
- Test scale: cell, module, or complete system.
UL 9540A is described in a U.S. Department of Energy safety-review document as a staged methodology for characterizing thermal-runaway and fire or explosion behavior. A result applies to the tested product and configuration; it is not a blanket certification of every product using the same chemistry. Read the DOE safety-review document.
What thermal runaway means for fire risk
UL Research Institutes defines thermal runaway as a cell entering “an uncontrollable, self-heating state.” The process can produce high temperatures, venting, smoke, and fire. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) also warns that cells may be ejected and that reignition can occur after a fire appears to be out. Read UL’s explanation.

These hazards are why a battery that is not visibly burning can still warrant caution if it is unusually hot, damaged, or behaving abnormally. For active incidents, USFA’s information is responder guidance—not a do-it-yourself firefighting procedure. See USFA’s responder guidance.

Follow the instructions for the specific battery and device. USFA’s consumer guidance recommends choosing certified products, handling batteries carefully, and stopping use if a battery develops an odor, excessive heat, a color or shape change, leakage, or unusual noises. Keep spare batteries away from combustible materials, direct sunlight, and hot vehicles. USFA advises against charging below 0°C or above 40°C; the manufacturer’s directions govern a particular battery and may be more restrictive. Read USFA’s battery safety guidance.
