A racing wheel is an optional way to add physical steering and, on some models, force feedback. Whether that tactile difference is worth the cost, setup, and space depends on the game and what you find fun; a wheel is not a proven shortcut to better enjoyment or faster driving.
What a wheel changes—and what it does not
A gamepad is enough to get started. Forza Support identifies a compatible gamepad as the equipment requirement for its games and notes that assists accommodate different skill levels. That is a useful example, not a rule for every racing game: check the requirements for the specific title you want to play. Forza Support: Overview
A wheel changes the way you interact with a game. Microsoft’s technical documentation describes analog steering, throttle, and brake input; some wheels also provide force feedback, which applies forces intended to convey road feel. Features such as a clutch, handbrake, and shifter depend on the wheel model and the software using it. A wheel’s physical controls may feel more immersive to you, but those capabilities do not guarantee that you will enjoy a game more. Microsoft Learn: Racing Wheel and Force Feedback
Controller or wheel: which suits your priorities?
| If you care most about… | A controller | A wheel |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Compact and familiar for many players; use one you already own if it is compatible. | May require mounting, setup, and room to use or store it. Some models offer different mounting options. TechRadar’s Turtle Beach Racer review describes desk clamps and lap rests on that particular product. |
| Physical steering feel | Steering is handled through the gamepad’s controls. | Provides a circular steering interface. Some models add force feedback; not every wheel has it, and game support matters. |
| Compatibility | Check that the game supports your controller on your platform. | Confirm the exact wheel, platform, and game. Support and presets can be title-specific. |
| Cost and commitment | If you already have a compatible gamepad, you may not need another purchase. | Price and capabilities vary. Compare current local prices and the features you will actually use; there is no timeless price point that makes a wheel worthwhile for everyone. |
Check game and platform support before buying
Compatibility is not universal across consoles, PCs, wheels, and games. For example, EA publishes a game-specific compatibility list and default wheel presets for F1 25 on PC. That list is evidence for that game and its stated platforms—not proof that every wheel works with every racing title. EA Help: F1 25 controllers, wheels, and VR support

Manufacturer compatibility guidance can help narrow options, but treat it as guidance for the named products and games. Thrustmaster’s Forza Horizon 6 guide, for instance, names a T98 bundle with a two-pedal set and describes availability on PS5, Xbox, and PC. Verify the exact model and game support before ordering. Thrustmaster: Which Racing Wheel Should You Choose for Forza Horizon 6?
- Check the game’s official wheel-support information for your platform.
- Confirm the precise wheel model and platform compatibility rather than relying on a brand name alone.
- Check which accessories are included, such as pedals, and whether the features you want—especially force feedback—are present.
- Consider how the wheel will mount and where you will use or store it.
Try settings before replacing your controls
If a game feels difficult or uncomfortable on a controller, look for control and difficulty options first. Forza Horizon 5 documents adjustable difficulty, controller remapping, and audio settings. Its accessibility announcement also describes an offline Game Speed Modification setting that lets players reduce game speed. These are Forza Horizon 5 features, not settings guaranteed in every arcade racer. Xbox Wire: Gaming for Everyone: The Accessibility Features of Forza Horizon 5

Another game-specific example comes from Windows Central’s October 2026 NASCAR 26 review: the reviewer says the game is playable on a controller and its inputs can be customized. That is one reviewer’s account of one title, not a controlled comparison of controller and wheel performance. Windows Central: NASCAR 26 review
How to decide whether a wheel is worth it for you
- Start with the game. Check whether it supports your current controller and, if you are considering a wheel, verify the exact game-platform-model combination.
- Identify what you want from the experience. If you are curious about physical steering or force feedback, a wheel may appeal to you. If quick, compact play matters more, a compatible gamepad may be a better fit.
- Account for your setup. Decide where the wheel would mount, whether you have room for it, and whether you are comfortable setting it up and putting it away.
- Try before committing if you can. Borrowing a friend’s wheel or testing a demo setup can help you learn whether the feel suits you; treat it as a personal preference test, not a guarantee of performance.
- Compare the complete package. Check current prices in your region along with included pedals, feedback features, mounting, and compatibility—not just the wheel’s headline name.
What enjoyment evidence can—and cannot—tell you
There is no established universal result showing that arcade racing games are more enjoyable, easier, or faster for everyone with a wheel. A 2014 paper by Li and colleagues discusses an earlier Need for Speed: Pro Street study that found no correlation between controller type and enjoyment. That old, indirect finding cannot settle how players feel about today’s games or different wheel setups. Li et al., CHI 2014 paper
