To reduce the risk of a lithium-ion battery fire, use the charger specified for your device, charge it on a hard surface away from flammable materials, keep it within the manufacturer’s temperature limits, and stop using it if it becomes swollen, unusually hot, damaged, or starts making noises. No charging routine makes a damaged battery safe.
Charge with the right equipment, in the right place
Follow the device maker’s charging instructions. Use the charger supplied with the device or a replacement the manufacturer explicitly confirms is compatible; a charger labeled “universal” is not automatically suitable. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and its device safety handout advise using the charger provided for the device or one from a reputable source.
- Charge on a stable, hard surface, not on a bed or couch or under a pillow. Keep the device away from curtains, bedding, paper, and other materials that can catch fire.
- Plug the charger directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord or multiplug adapter.
- Do not continue charging once the device is fully charged, following the National Fire Protection Association’s household safety guidance. No particular charging duration guarantees safety.
- For an e-bike or other large device, choose a charging location that does not block an exit route.
If the charger is missing or damaged
Check the device maker’s instructions or contact the manufacturer to confirm a replacement for your exact model. Do not rely on a generic charger’s connector fitting as proof of electrical compatibility.
Keep charging and storage conditions cool and dry
USFA says not to charge lithium-ion batteries below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C). These are charging limits, not a universal storage specification; follow the manufacturer’s storage instructions for the particular device.

- When possible, store batteries at room temperature in a cool, dry place.
- Keep them out of direct sunlight and hot cars, and away from flammable materials.
- Do not charge a battery outside the device maker’s stated temperature range.
These steps apply to everyday home charging and storage. If the device or battery has been damaged, do not treat ordinary precautions as a way to make it safe.
Recognize battery warning signs and stop using the device
Stop using and charging a battery if you notice an unusual odor, discoloration, excessive heat, a change in shape, leakage, cracking, or bulging. Hissing, popping, visible gas venting, or a temperature that keeps rising are also serious warning signs described by USFA’s lithium-ion battery safety guidance.

Do not open or attempt to repair a battery pack yourself. The USFA handout directs consumers to use a certified repair facility for pack repairs. If a battery is hot, smoking, or otherwise showing signs of failure, keep clear and do not handle it.
What to do if a lithium-ion battery catches fire
Leave the area and call emergency services. USFA’s instruction is: “If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, don’t try to put it out. Evacuate and call 911 immediately.” Do not approach or try to move a hot, smoking, or burning battery.

Choose devices carefully and dispose of batteries properly
Before buying
USFA advises considering devices certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and buying from a reputable retailer. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) lists voluntary standards including UL 1642 for lithium batteries, UL 2743 for portable power packs, UL 1310 for Class 2 power units, and UL 62133 for portable sealed secondary cells and batteries. These standards are context for product safety, not a guarantee that a product is appropriate for every device or use. USFA’s handout also recommends checking CPSC recall information before purchase.
At end of life
Do not put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or ordinary recycling. Use a local battery collection or recycling program, and check its accepted battery types and handling instructions with your local authority or the manufacturer. USFA’s handout advises taping battery ends and terminals to help prevent accidental discharge when preparing batteries for collection; collector rules and a battery’s condition can affect what is safe, so follow local instructions. Contact the manufacturer about damaged batteries rather than placing them in a collection stream without guidance.
