Choose an arcade-leaning racer if you want to explore a world, jump into varied events, and drive for immediate fun. Choose a simulation-leaning racer if you enjoy learning circuits, repeating laps, and managing how the car behaves through a race. The difference is a spectrum, not a simple divide between “fake” and “real”: games such as Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo 7 pair simulation-oriented systems with features designed to help newcomers.
What’s the difference between arcade racing and sim racing?
Arcade racers tend to put freedom, pace, and varied activities first. A large world and a quick event can make each session feel different without asking you to treat every drive as practice. That does not mean every arcade racer is easy, or that its driving has no depth.
Sim racers tend to put circuits, repeatable laps, and vehicle behavior at the center. Depending on the game, that can mean practicing corners, learning race procedures, or paying attention to tire and fuel strategy or changing track conditions. The extra systems appeal to players who enjoy improving through deliberate practice; they do not automatically make a game inaccessible.
These are tendencies, not strict genre rules. A game can offer approachable assists and structured learning while still emphasizing track racing, or mix serious driving systems with more relaxed play.

How the three examples differ
Forza Horizon 5: open-world variety
Forza Horizon 5 is the clearest fit if exploration and a varied menu of driving activities matter more than working through a circuit routine. Forza says the game is set in Mexico and reports that more than 40 content updates have added hundreds of cars, races, features, and gameplay experiences. These are publisher-reported figures on the current product page, not an independent comparison of game size or quality. The page lists Game Pass and purchase through Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, or Steam; check current regional availability and edition details before buying. [Forza Horizon 5 official page]
Forza Motorsport: track racing with learning tools
Forza Motorsport is a good middle ground if you want a circuit-focused game but value guidance as you learn. Its official page describes Open Practice with corner feedback, a Builders Cup career, race-weekend multiplayer, and tire and fuel strategy. It also reports more than 500 cars, 30 tracks, and more than 800 performance upgrades. Those counts describe the product according to Forza; they are not a measure of how realistic or enjoyable it is. The features support calling it simulation-oriented, not a professional-grade simulator. [Forza Motorsport official page]

Gran Turismo 7: structured racing and car learning
Gran Turismo 7 may suit you if you want to work through licences and curated races, tune cars, and encounter changing weather on track. Sony and Polyphony Digital’s product page reports more than 550 cars from more than 70 manufacturers and tracks at 41 locations in 121 layouts. These are publisher-reported product counts, not directly comparable measures of quality: the games have different scopes and change over time. The title is available on PS4 and PS5; PS VR2 support applies to the PS5 version. The cited product page is UK-specific for prices, so check your local store for current regional editions and pricing. [Gran Turismo 7 official page]
How to choose between an arcade racer and a sim racer
- Choose your preferred session. If you want to roam and move between different activities, start with an open-world game such as Forza Horizon 5. If you want to get faster on defined circuits, consider Forza Motorsport or Gran Turismo 7.
- Decide how much practice and setup sound enjoyable. Forza Motorsport advertises practice feedback, upgrades, race-weekend events, and tire and fuel strategy. Gran Turismo 7 offers licences, curated races, tuning, and weather effects. These systems reward interest in learning the car and track; you do not need to approach them as a test of skill before you start.
- Check your platform before settling on a title. Gran Turismo 7 is a PS4 and PS5 game, with PS VR2 support on PS5 only. For Forza Horizon 5, review the official page and your local storefront for current availability, editions, and purchase options.
- Pick your control method separately from the genre. A controller is a reasonable starting point; a racing wheel is an optional upgrade for immersion, not a requirement. If considering a wheel, check its manufacturer’s compatibility listing for your exact game, platform, and mode before buying. Thrustmaster’s T128 listing, for example, gives platform- and mode-specific compatibility details. [Thrustmaster T128 compatibility information]
- Try the style you already enjoy. You do not have to choose a permanent identity as an arcade or sim player. Start with the play format that sounds appealing, then try the other style if your preferences change.
Do you need a wheel to start sim racing?
No. A wheel can make driving feel more immersive, but it is optional. Start with the controller you have, then decide whether you want different controls after you know what you enjoy about the game. Before purchasing a wheel, use the manufacturer’s compatibility list to confirm support for your exact platform, game, and operating mode; the T128 listing shows why checking the specific setup matters.
