To add music to a Snapchat Snap, open the Snap creation or preview screen, tap Sounds, choose and preview a track, trim it if needed, then tap Done. Use Snapchat’s in-app selector for the documented workflow—but do not assume that a track selected there is cleared for every account, territory, or use outside Snapchat.
How to add a song to a Snapchat Snap
- Open the Snap creation or preview workflow. Capture or select the Snap you want to use.
- Tap Sounds. Browse categories such as For You, Saved, Recents, Trending, or My Sounds, or search for an artist or sound.
- Select and preview a result. Tap a sound to hear it with your Snap. Tap it again to remove it if you change your mind.
- Choose the part of the track. Tap the trim icon and adjust where the song starts.
- Apply the sound. Tap Done. Snapchat’s labels and feature availability can change; see its current instructions for adding music to a Snap.
You can also bookmark a sound for later from the Sounds tool. The available categories and results may vary; Snapchat’s support instructions do not specify regional availability.
Use an original sound or music from another Snap
Record a Sound in Snapchat
- Tap Sounds, then choose Create Sound.
- Record for up to 60 seconds, then tap the microphone again to stop.
- Name the sound, optionally make it public, and trim it if needed.
- Tap Save Sound.
You can tap the sound label on a Snap to use that sound. For a Spotlight Snap, open its sound page and tap Use Sound. These are separate options from selecting a catalog track; recording or finding a sound does not by itself establish that you have rights to any third-party music in it. Details are in Snapchat’s Sounds instructions.
Add music to a multi-clip video
In Snapchat’s Timeline Editor, open the editor from a video Snap preview and add music through Sounds or Add a Sound. The track appears as a separate layer beneath the clips. The editor instructions say only one licensed song can play at a time; if the video is longer than the song, the song may loop. This is a Timeline Editor feature detail, not a general statement about what any music license allows. See Snapchat’s Timeline Editor instructions.

Can you use any song on Snapchat?
No general permission follows simply from owning a copy of a song, recording it from a speaker, giving credit, or using only a short excerpt. In the United States, a song’s musical composition (music and lyrics) and a particular sound recording are distinct copyrighted works, and they may have different owners and be licensed separately. A video using a recording can involve rights in both. The U.S. Copyright Office explains this distinction in its music copyright guidance.
Snapchat’s Sounds instructions explain how to select music, but do not enumerate the complete license scope for each track, account type, territory, or use outside Snapchat. They do not establish that every selected track may be downloaded, reposted to another service, used in advertising, or otherwise used off-platform. For a planned use beyond posting a Snap on Snapchat, check the current applicable Snapchat terms and any track-specific restrictions before publishing.

When might music use be copyright infringement?
Snapchat describes infringement as using another person’s work without permission and gives examples associated with fair use, including parody, news reporting, criticism, and commentary. Those labels do not automatically make a particular use lawful. In the United States, fair use depends on the facts and circumstances of the use; a short clip, a credit line, a noncommercial post, or a disclaimer is not a guaranteed exemption. Snapchat’s overview is at What is copyright infringement?; it is not a substitute for legal advice. This explanation is U.S.-focused, not global legal guidance.
Choose an audio source based on the rights you need
| Audio source | What the workflow provides | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Track selected in Snapchat Sounds | In-app selection, preview, and trimming for a Snap, as described in Snapchat’s Sounds instructions. | The cited instructions do not establish the complete license for a particular track, account, territory, commercial use, or use outside Snapchat. |
| Sound you record or create | Snapchat documents a Create Sound flow with recordings of up to 60 seconds. | If it includes someone else’s composition or recording, establish that the relevant rights and permissions cover your intended use. |
| Song or recording added in another editor | The cited Snapchat instructions do not establish permissions for audio inserted through another editor. | Check whether you have permission for both the composition and recording, and whether it covers your platform, account type, territory, and any commercial or branded use. |
Snapchat separately requires users submitting content through a Custom Creative Tool to obtain all necessary rights and permissions, including performance rights and applicable royalties. That policy concerns Custom Creative Tool submissions; it is not a definitive explanation of the ordinary Sounds catalog license. Read the Custom Creative Tools Submission Guidelines if that is the workflow you are using.

Will Snapchat remove a Snap for music?
The cited help pages do not establish what will happen to an individual Snap or provide a guaranteed enforcement outcome. If you are unsure whether you have permission, avoid using the music until you check the applicable terms and rights. For a consequential commercial or cross-platform use, consider advice from a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
