For most newer Windows games, put the Logitech F710’s physical input switch in X (XInput), connect its USB receiver, then check that Steam and the game recognize the controller. Logitech recommends XInput for new Windows games. Use D (DirectInput) for an older game that expects it or when you want the controller customization Logitech associates with DirectInput.
The physical switch and Steam’s settings do different jobs: the switch changes how the F710 reports input, while Steam Input and a game’s own controls determine how that input is used. Set the switch before launching a game; if you change modes while playing, restart the game if it stops recognizing the controller.
Choose the F710 input mode before opening a game
The F710 has a physical switch for XInput and DirectInput. Logitech recommends X for new Windows games and suggests trying D for older games designed for DirectInput. Steamworks lists “Any DirectInput gamepad” among devices supported by Steam Input, but that category-level statement does not certify every F710 feature in every Steam game.
| Mode | When to use it | Important behavior | Logitech software customization |
|---|---|---|---|
| X (XInput) | Logitech recommends this for new Windows games. | In the documented mismatch case—an X-mode F710 used with a DirectInput game—the triggers may function as one button and vibration may be unavailable. | Logitech Gaming Software cannot configure the F710 in XInput mode. |
| D (DirectInput) | Try it for an older game that expects DirectInput. | Game behavior depends on the game’s support and configuration. | Logitech associates F710 control customization through Gaming Software with DirectInput mode. |
The trigger and vibration limitations above come from Logitech’s F710 setup guide, which carries a © 2011 notice; treat them as the documented mismatch behavior, not a guarantee about every game. Logitech also says it does not provide F710 configuration software for non-Windows systems.

- The 2.4 GHz wireless connection uses a tiny Plug-and-Forget Nano-receiver that stays in your USB port, even on laptops, for fast data transmission with minimal delays, dropouts, or interference.
- With broad game support, the Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* Requires software installation
- Dual vibration motors let you feel every hit, crash and explosion in games that support vibration feedback for a more realistic and immersive experience
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on game console controllers
Connect the receiver and check Steam and the game
- Move the F710’s physical switch to X for a newer Windows game, or to D if the game requires DirectInput. Do this before launching the game.
- Connect the wireless USB receiver and confirm the controller has power. Logitech’s setup guide recommends a fully powered USB port.
- Open Steam and check whether the controller is detected, then launch the game and test its controller response. Steam Input support does not mean every game accepts every controller mapping.
- If the game offers its own controller or input options, use those to verify that it is set to accept gamepad input. A Steam mapping cannot make a game respond to gamepad input if that game does not support it.
Steam Support’s cited configuration guidance is written for Steam Controller configurations, not specifically for F710 calibration. It notes that selected input styles can fail if the game does not support them and that gamepad-only bindings require a game with gamepad support. Logitech and Valve’s official documentation does not establish one universal current Steam-client click path for configuring or calibrating the F710, so the exact labels and controls available may vary by client and game.
Configure a per-game mapping only if needed
Start with the game’s own controller support and Steam’s available input configuration rather than assuming one F710 layout will work everywhere. If you assign gamepad-only inputs, the game must support gamepad input. When a mapping appears to save but has no effect, check whether the game supports that input style before changing more bindings.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Steam’s Big Picture mode is a Steam interface mode, not an alternative F710 hardware input mode. Switching to it does not change the controller’s X/D switch. Valve’s Big Picture FAQ describes the mode here: Steam’s Big Picture mode.

Steam or the game does not detect the F710
- Check that the receiver is firmly connected, then try a different USB port.
- Check battery contact and try fresh batteries if needed.
- If the wireless connection is intermittent, try the included USB extension cable to reposition the receiver.
- Restart the computer if the receiver still is not recognized.
- Avoid an unpowered USB hub; Logitech says the receiver works best in a fully powered port and that a hub should have its own power supply.
Steam detects the controller, but the game does not respond
- Check that the physical switch is set to the mode the game expects. If you change modes during play, restart the game.
- Confirm that the game supports gamepad input and the input style used by the mapping.
- Steam Support recommends checking whether the Steam Overlay appears and is enabled when troubleshooting controller configuration.
- Consider whether third-party software or an external launcher overlay is interfering. These are Steam-level troubleshooting suggestions, not F710-specific fixes guaranteed to work.
