If an unexpected caller claims to be your bank, a government agency, law enforcement, or someone you know, do not trust caller ID to prove who they are. Hang up, then contact that person or organization using a number you find independently. If you have already sent money or shared sensitive information, contact the relevant bank, payment provider, or identity-theft resource promptly and report the incident through official channels.

How to tell whether a caller is impersonating someone

Phone-based impersonation scams use a trusted name or situation to pressure you into paying, sharing information, or taking action. The caller may claim to represent a government agency, police department, court, bank, or business, or pretend to be a family member or romantic contact. Common stories involve an alleged crime, unpaid debt, account problem, emergency, expiring license, missed jury duty, prize, or benefit at risk.

Look for pressure and unusual payment demands

  • Urgency: the caller insists you must act immediately or face arrest, prosecution, financial loss, or another serious consequence.
  • Secrecy: they tell you not to talk to family, your bank, or anyone else, or demand that you remain on the call.
  • Unusual payment methods: they ask for cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, a payment app, prepaid or gift cards, cash, or a courier.
  • Requests for sensitive information: they seek account credentials, verification codes, Social Security details, or bank information.

A familiar caller ID name or number does not authenticate the caller: scammers can spoof it. An employee number, personal details, or a convincing voice or video is not proof either. The FBI has warned that scammers use AI-generated video and impersonate agency reporting services. An unsolicited social-media contact offering to file a report or recover money is not a trustworthy substitute for an official channel.

What to do while the suspicious call is happening

  1. End the conversation. Hang up; you do not have to stay on the line because the caller says so. If it is a robocall, do not press buttons in response.
  2. Do not pay or disclose information. Do not give the caller money, account credentials, verification codes, Social Security or bank details, or other sensitive information. Do not click links sent in an unexpected message.
  3. Verify through a channel you find yourself. Look up the organization’s contact information on its official website, use a number on a statement, or call the number on the back of your bank card. Ask whether the claim is real. Do not call a number supplied by the caller or rely on caller ID.
  4. Treat government and law-enforcement payment demands as a warning sign. Do not pay to avoid arrest, prosecution, or an investigation. The FBI says authorities will not call or text to demand payment or sensitive information.

If you already paid or shared information

Contact the company or financial institution that handled the payment as soon as possible. Ask whether the transaction can be stopped or reversed; recovery is not guaranteed.

For law-enforcement or government impersonation schemes, use the legitimate IC3 website. The FBI warns that impostors may create lookalike reporting pages or contact victims through social media. IC3 says it does not recover money through social media or paid recovery services.

Other official contacts

For a government impersonation, the FTC also recommends reporting it to your state attorney general. If a caller claims to represent a particular agency, find that agency’s contact details independently rather than using information the caller provides.

How widespread are impersonation scams?

The FTC reported $3.5 billion in losses to imposter scams in 2025 and said nearly one in three fraud reports that year concerned imposter scams. These figures cover imposter scams across contact methods, not phone-only scams. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported nearly 61,000 complaints and more than $1.6 billion in losses from law-enforcement or government impersonation scams between January 2025 and July 2026. The FBI says those schemes primarily used unsolicited calls but could also involve texts and email; the figures are not phone-only totals.

Can call blocking help?

Call-blocking apps, carrier services, and devices can reduce unwanted calls, but they do not verify a caller’s identity or guarantee that spoofed calls will be blocked. If you consider a tool, check that it works with your service—landline or mobile—and review which calls it filters, along with its cost and terms. Whatever tool you use, independently verify unexpected requests for money or information.
