To choose an AI search engine with privacy practices that fit your needs, compare what it records about ordinary searches and AI conversations, whether it links that data to identifiers, how it uses data to improve models, and how long it keeps records. Then check the current settings and terms for the specific feature you plan to use. A provider’s policy describes its stated practices; it is not an independent verification of how the service operates.
What “private” means for AI search
Privacy is not a single setting. A service might avoid associating search records with your identity but still retain conversation text. It might delete conversations quickly while using some activity to improve its services. Compare these questions separately:
- Collection: Does the service record conventional search queries, AI prompts, conversation history, or feedback?
- Linkage: Can records be associated with your account, device, IP address, or other identifiers?
- Improvement and training: Can your activity help improve products or train generative AI models?
- Retention and deletion: How long are searches, conversations, and account records kept, and what happens when you delete them?
- Controls: Is there an opt-out, and does it cover every relevant feature?
These distinctions matter because a provider may handle its traditional search product differently from its AI-answer or chat feature.

| Brave Search | Brave says it stores de-identified search-query data, including the query text, platform, operating system, country, language, and date. Ask Brave requests are processed on Brave’s servers, and conversation state is stored for the conversation. Brave Search privacy notice | Brave says stored query data is not associated with an individual, device, or IP address. The notice also describes temporary IP processing for service integrity. Brave Search privacy notice | The cited notice does not establish a comparable model-training opt-out for Ask Brave; check the current notice and feature settings rather than assuming that search and AI use are identical. Brave Search privacy notice | Brave says Ask Brave conversation state is automatically erased after 24 hours of inactivity. Publicly shared conversations may be stored for up to seven days. | Google Search | Google’s Search Services History help page describes saved Search Services History and its use to provide, develop, and improve services. Google Search Services History help | Google says data used to train models is disconnected from the Google Account. That statement concerns training data; do not treat it as a claim that all Search Services History is unlinked. Google Search Services History help | Google says Search Services History may be used to improve services, including training generative AI models. Turning off Search Services History stops future activity from being used for that training unless you provide feedback. Google Search Services History help | Google says training data is retained for up to four years. The cited page does not give a comparable conversation-deletion duration in this summary; consult the current help page for the controls and records relevant to your account. | Perplexity | Perplexity’s FAQ says search queries and feedback can be used for AI learning. The FAQ appears substantially older than the Brave and Google pages cited here, so verify the present wording before relying on it. Perplexity FAQ | The cited FAQ says personal information is retained while an account is active; it does not establish the same detailed query-linkage claims as the other policies summarized here. Perplexity FAQ | The FAQ directs users to switch off “AI Data Usage” in account settings to opt out of AI learning. Confirm that this setting name and scope are still current. Perplexity FAQ | The FAQ says personal information is removed from servers within 30 days after account deletion. This is account-data language, not a stated conversation inactivity window. Brave describes its Answer with AI feature as providing concise answers based solely on web search results and citing sources so users can assess trustworthiness. That description concerns how the feature presents answers; it does not replace a review of its data-handling terms. Brave Search
Check the settings before you search
- Identify the feature. Determine whether you will use conventional search, an AI answer, a conversational assistant, or a combination. Find the policy language for each rather than assuming one setting covers them all.
- Read the collection and linkage terms. Look for query text, prompts, conversation history, feedback, account association, device information, and IP processing. Note whether a provider distinguishes stored records from temporary processing.
- Find the improvement control. Check whether searches or prompts may be used to improve services or train models, then locate the setting that changes future use. Read any stated exceptions, such as feedback submitted by the user.
- Check deletion and retention separately. Distinguish automatic conversation expiry from account-data deletion, and note whether shared conversations receive different treatment.
- Recheck the current terms. Before entering sensitive information, confirm current settings, plan terms, geography, and policy wording. Product controls and policies can change.
Choose based on the data you are willing to share
If your priority is avoiding direct linkage between ordinary search records and your identity, look for an explicit statement about account, device, and IP association—and read any exceptions for temporary processing. If your priority is preventing model improvement use, seek a clearly described opt-out and verify whether it covers search queries, AI prompts, and feedback. If short-lived conversations matter most, compare the stated expiry period with what happens to shared chats and account records.

No single policy detail answers all of these questions. For example, an account-level opt-out may address future training use without establishing how long the service keeps other records. Likewise, a short conversation-retention window does not by itself answer whether the provider uses activity for product improvement.
