If Netflix looks unusually dark on your computer, first check whether the dimness affects other apps too. If it does, investigate your display’s HDR/SDR brightness settings; if Netflix alone looks dark, check its HDR playback requirements and compare playback in another supported browser or app. The right fix depends on whether you use Windows or macOS and whether the screen is built in or external.

First, find out whether Netflix is the only thing that looks dark

Compare the same scene in another supported browser or Netflix playback route, and look at other video and desktop content on the same display. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.

  • Netflix and other content look dim: Start with your operating system’s HDR/SDR balance and the display’s brightness or picture controls.
  • Only Netflix looks dim: Check whether the stream is using HDR and whether your browser, app, display, and connection meet Netflix’s requirements. Browser capabilities differ by operating system and version; see Netflix’s supported browsers page.

Microsoft notes that “Some SDR apps appear darker on an HDR display compared to other SDR apps shown on the same display.” Its HDR settings in Windows guidance also cautions that results vary by display model.

Adjust HDR and SDR brightness in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the HDR-capable display you watch on, then open its HDR settings.
  3. Adjust the SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness control, as available, until the picture looks balanced.
  4. If the change does not appear, restart the Netflix app or browser. Microsoft notes that some apps need restarting to apply HDR-setting changes.

Windows adjusts the relative appearance of SDR and HDR content; the result is not identical on every screen. If you use an external display, confirm HDR is enabled in both Windows and the display’s own menu.

Check the display arrangement and battery setting

In the Windows scenario Microsoft documents, HDR is not supported in duplicate display mode. If you are using an external HDR screen, try extending the desktop and viewing Netflix on that screen. Also check the HDR settings for an option that turns HDR or HDR video streaming off on battery. Plugging in the laptop or allowing HDR video streaming on battery can keep HDR available, if your device offers that option.

Check whether your Windows setup supports Netflix HDR

Netflix lists these conditions for HDR playback on Windows: Windows 11 with current updates, a plan that supports HDR, playback quality set to Auto or High, a supported browser or the Netflix Windows app, compatible graphics, and an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled. Every active display must meet Netflix’s requirements. Netflix lists Microsoft Edge and its Windows app for up to UHD with HDR when system requirements are met. See Netflix’s Windows HDR requirements.

Browser limits change and vary by browser. In the supported-browser table accessed on October 4, 2026, Netflix lists Edge 118+ and Chrome 117+ for up to UHD when requirements are met; Firefox 129+ and Opera 92+ are listed up to Full HD. Check Netflix’s current browser requirements rather than relying on those version numbers indefinitely.

Check HDR and video settings on a Mac

For Netflix HDR on Mac, Netflix lists the latest Safari, a compatible Mac and HDR-capable display, macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later, and HDR enabled in Display settings. Depending on the display, that means selecting the Apple XDR Display preset or enabling the High Dynamic Range checkbox. Netflix also requires Optimize video streaming while on battery to be turned off. If you connect an external display, its cable or adapter must support HDR. See Netflix’s Mac HDR requirements.

Mac UHD requirements are a separate set of conditions, and meeting them does not itself make a dim picture brighter. Netflix’s listed Mac UHD setup requires an Apple processor or Apple T2 Security chip, a built-in UHD-capable display, macOS Big Sur 11.0 or later, the latest Safari, a supported plan, playback quality set to Auto or High, and a steady connection of at least 15 megabits per second. For UHD on an external display, Netflix lists 4K resolution, a minimum refresh rate of 60 Hz, and an HDCP 2.2-rated video cable. These are Netflix’s current requirements; see the Mac playback guidance for the full details.

When an external cable is relevant

A cable is worth investigating only when you use an external display and the connection may not meet the requirements for the playback you want. Netflix requires an HDR-capable cable or adapter for Mac HDR. For Mac UHD over an external display, it specifies an HDCP 2.2-rated video cable. Replacing a cable is not a general brightness fix for a built-in laptop screen or an otherwise compatible connection. Microsoft also recommends checking graphics drivers and, when supported, using DisplayPort rather than HDMI for an external HDR display.

What not to change without a reason

Netflix’s dark-picture guidance treats brightness and HDR controls as device-dependent and directs users to device instructions or the manufacturer. It does not give computer-specific brightness steps. Use Windows Display settings or macOS Display and Battery settings, and consult your display maker’s instructions for its own picture controls.

Do not treat disabling HDR, buying a cable, changing browser hardware acceleration, or replacing a monitor as a universal remedy. The useful next step depends on whether the dimness is limited to Netflix, whether HDR is involved, and how the display is connected. If the issue persists, note your operating system and version, computer and display models, browser or app, HDR status, and whether the screen is built in or external; those details narrow down which requirement or setting to check next.
