The key difference is what captures the picture: a phone-mounted lens-style camera has its own sensor and imaging hardware, while a clip-on smartphone lens sits over a camera already built into the phone. The first adds another camera; the second changes the view through the phone’s existing camera.
Does a clip-on phone lens have its own camera sensor?
No. A clip-on lens is auxiliary optics placed in front of one of the phone’s cameras. The phone’s sensor still records the image. The accessory can change the field of view or create an effect, but it is not a camera by itself. B&H describes a common design in which a lens screws into a clip that fits over the phone camera (B&H’s smartphone lens guide); Olloclip likewise describes lenses that attach over an existing camera (Olloclip).
A lens-style camera unit is different: it has its own imaging hardware and can use the phone as a screen and controller. “Camera module” can also mean the lens-and-sensor assembly built inside a phone; that is not the external accessory discussed here. Samsung Electro-Mechanics uses the term for integrated phone-camera assemblies (Samsung Electro-Mechanics camera modules).
What can each type add?
Clip-on lenses change the view
Phone add-on lenses are commonly designed for wider framing, macro close-ups, fisheye perspective, telephoto, or anamorphic framing. SIRUI, for example, lists wide-angle, portrait, fisheye, and macro lenses for its clip system (SIRUI phone lenses). Results depend on the accessory’s optical design, how accurately it aligns with the phone camera, and the camera it covers. A magnification label alone does not establish image quality.

Separate camera units bring their own imaging system
A camera unit can have its own sensor, lens, zoom, controls, processing, battery, and storage. Sony’s QX100 and QX10, released in 2013, illustrate the distinction: Sony described them as complete cameras controlled through a connected phone, and also said they could be used separately from it (Sony Hong Kong’s September 13, 2013 release).
The QX models’ specifications are historical examples, not typical or current category-wide figures:

These figures are the specifications Sony published for those named products; they do not show that a separate camera unit will outperform a particular phone.
How do mounting and compatibility differ?
Clip systems: quick to attach, dependent on alignment
A generic clip can be easy to remove and move between devices, but it must sit directly over the intended camera and keep a clear optical path. Before choosing one, check:

- Whether the clip opening reaches the phone camera in the intended position.
- Whether a camera bump or case thickness prevents the clip from sitting flat.
- Whether the lens and clip are listed as compatible with each other.
- Whether the clip stays aligned during the kind of shooting you plan to do.
SIRUI says its MSC-01 works with most phones and tablets, while naming particular SIRUI lenses as compatible (SIRUI phone lenses). “Most” is a broad manufacturer claim, not confirmation that a specific phone-and-case combination will fit.
Case-and-mount systems: more integrated, more specific
A case with a built-in lens mount can make attachment more unified, but the case and lenses may be tied to a particular brand, mount, and phone model. B&H’s guide discusses proprietary compatibility and the possibility of needing a new case or adapter as phones change (B&H’s smartphone lens guide). Confirm the exact phone model, case, mount generation, and lens before buying; compatibility with one generation is not proof of fit with another.

Separate camera units: check the attachment and connection
External camera units need their own mounting and control arrangements. In Sony’s 2013 QX release, the supplied phone attachment was specified for several popular phones within stated size limits; the cameras connected over Wi-Fi through PlayMemories Mobile, with NFC one-touch pairing for compatible phones (Sony Hong Kong’s release). Those are dated product details, not evidence that the legacy app or pairing method is supported on current phones.

With a clip-on lens
You attach and align the lens, then use the phone’s camera. The workflow remains centered on the phone, though the stability and convenience of the setup depend on the clip or case mount.

With a separate camera unit
You carry and operate another imaging device, including its power and connection needs. In the QX examples, the phone could provide remote viewing and control while the camera was positioned apart from it. That describes a capability of those products, not a measured convenience advantage.
If you use a gimbal
An added lens can affect balance. DJI’s Osmo Mobile 6 FAQ recommends keeping the combined phone-and-lens weight below 290 g for that gimbal; this is model-specific guidance, not a universal limit for other stabilizers (DJI Osmo Mobile 6 FAQ).
Which should you choose?
- Choose a clip-on lens if you want a specific optical effect or framing change while continuing to use the phone camera’s sensor and normal capture workflow.
- Consider a case-and-mount lens system if you want a more integrated attachment and are willing to check compatibility with a specific phone, case, mount generation, and lens.
- Consider a separate camera unit if you want an accessory with its own imaging hardware and accept carrying, powering, and connecting another device.
Compare products by their imaging hardware, optical purpose, attachment security, exact phone fit, workflow, and compatibility with any support gear you use. The category name alone does not establish what a product can do or how well it will work with your phone.
