Waiting to buy gas saves money only if the gallons you eventually purchase cost less than they otherwise would—and the price difference outweighs any extra driving or other direct costs. Estimate the benefit using the gallons affected, not the capacity of your whole tank, and keep a safe fuel reserve rather than stretching a fill-up to chase a possible price drop.
Calculate the price benefit on the gallons you will buy
For a timing decision, the basic calculation is:
Gross savings = gallons bought at the lower price × price drop per gallon
For example, if you plan to buy 8 gallons and the alternative price is 15 cents per gallon lower, the gross benefit is 8 × $0.15 = $1.20. That is an illustration, not a prediction of future prices. The lower price affects only the gallons you buy at that price; it does not change what you already paid for fuel in the tank.
If you are deciding whether to delay, compare the price you expect to pay later with the price available now. A future drop is uncertain, so treat it as a possibility—not guaranteed savings. If you eventually buy the same gallons at the same price, changing the fill-up date alone has not saved money.

Check whether a detour to a cheaper station pays off
A low posted price is not necessarily the lowest-cost option if reaching that station takes extra driving. Estimate the cost of the extra miles, then subtract it and any other direct costs from the price benefit.
Use these values:
- g = gallons you expect to buy at the lower price
- d = price difference per gallon, in dollars
- e = extra round-trip miles to reach the station
- m = realistic miles per gallon for that trip
- p = fuel price per gallon used to value the extra driving
- o = other direct costs, such as a toll
Net savings = (g × d) − ((e ÷ m) × p) − o
If the result is zero or negative, the detour does not save money on that fill. Use a realistic fuel economy for the trip, not an optimistic range estimate. Compare the same fuel grade, and check whether the lower price depends on cash, a particular payment method, or another condition you can meet.

AAA’s Gas Watchers Guide 2004 advises drivers not to waste fuel driving to a distant station to save a few cents. The formula above makes that trade-off concrete: the price benefit must exceed the fuel and other costs of the extra trip.
Choose among filling now, waiting, and stopping at a cheaper station
| Option | What to compare | When it may make sense |
|---|---|---|
| Fill now | Today’s price on the gallons you need, alongside the value of keeping a safe reserve. | When you need fuel or a future price drop is too uncertain to justify waiting. |
| Wait while maintaining a reserve | The possible price difference on the gallons you will buy later; do not count a speculative drop as certain. | When you have enough fuel for safe travel and can accept that the later price may not be lower. |
| Use a cheaper station | The price benefit on your planned purchase minus extra driving fuel, tolls, and any payment or eligibility conditions. | When the station is nearby or already on a trip you plan to make, and the net calculation is positive. |
These are separate choices: when to buy and how much to buy. A partial fill can preserve flexibility, but it does not guarantee a lower price later. If some gallons are shifted from one purchase to another, count the price difference only on those gallons.

Keep enough fuel to avoid relying on a range estimate
Do not pursue a possible saving by running close to empty. AAA recommends watching the fuel gauge and refilling at about one-quarter tank; AAA East Central gives similar guidance to allow for unexpected delays.
In a July 2021 release, AAA reported that 74% of surveyed drivers used their “miles-to-empty” display when low on gas. In AAA’s selected-vehicle testing, the average fuel-economy display error was 2.3%, with individual errors ranging from −6.4% to 2.8%. Those results apply to the vehicles and scenarios AAA tested, not every vehicle. AAA noted that range and economy estimates varied with speed, acceleration, and distance. Its recommendation is to watch the gauge and refill at about a quarter tank, rather than treat the range display as a promise of how far you can safely drive. See AAA’s July 27, 2021 explanation of miles-to-empty accuracy and AAA East Central’s April 22, 2022 guidance.

Compare prices for a stop you can actually make
Price tools can help identify nearby options, but they do not establish that a stop will save you money after travel costs. AAA Club Alliance says its AAA Mobile app shows gas prices at nearby stations; GasBuddy documents searches near your location or by city or postal code. GasBuddy also documents a cash-price filter for some U.S. stations. Check the price and its conditions before relying on it.
See AAA Club Alliance’s March 16, 2026 tips and GasBuddy’s price-finding instructions, updated September 9, 2026. Compare stations near your route or on a trip already planned, then apply the net-savings calculation to the extra miles, if any.

Account for fuel economy without changing the decision into a separate project
For the detour calculation, use realistic trip fuel economy. AAA also recommends following the tire pressure listed by the vehicle manufacturer and avoiding practices such as hard acceleration to help fuel economy. Those measures can reduce fuel use, but they do not make an unprofitable detour worthwhile by themselves. See AAA Fuel Prices’ fuel-saving tips.
