Do not build from an AI room-design image. Treat it as a visual idea, check it against the actual room, and pause any work that depends on a feature that may be unsafe or unworkable. Get a qualified local professional to review changes to structure, electrical or plumbing systems, fire protection, or escape routes before you buy materials or start work.

First, separate decoration from changes that affect the building

A new color scheme, rug, or movable chair is a different kind of decision from removing a wall, moving a window or door, relocating wiring or plumbing, or changing fire-safety provisions. The second group depends on the existing building and may be subject to local rules and approvals. A convincing rendering does not establish that those changes are feasible.

The Institution of Structural Engineers warns that “A risk associated with structural safety is that an AI designing structural elements may make an error,” and identifies review by a senior engineer as a mitigation. Its guidance concerns AI and structural design generally, not a measured rate of errors in consumer room-design images. No reliable prevalence figure for unsafe or impossible features in those images is established by the sources cited here. Institution of Structural Engineers AI guidance

Screen the image against the real room

Before acting on a proposed layout, compare it with reliable measurements and what is actually present. Mark anything that appears to conflict with the room or depends on hidden assumptions; treat those items as questions to resolve, not construction instructions.

  • Dimensions and openings: Check room measurements and the location and size of existing doors and windows.
  • Fixed services and equipment: Note visible electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and other fixed features that the image may not show accurately.
  • Structure: Flag any proposed removal, opening, or alteration of a wall, ceiling, or other structural element.
  • Access and safety: Check whether the arrangement affects a route to an exit or other fire-safety provision.
  • Geometry: Look for objects that overlap, openings that cannot operate, or layouts that cannot fit the verified dimensions.

A rendered image may omit or distort existing conditions. The American Institute of Architects’ AI guidance emphasizes oversight and quality control for AI-assisted work; a rendering is not a substitute for verifying the actual space. AIA AI Firm Toolkit

Pause, document the issue, and get the right review

  1. Pause purchases and construction if a decision depends on a questionable structural feature, moved service, or safety provision.
  2. Mark up the image to distinguish decorative choices from conflicts with the room and changes to structure or building systems.
  3. Gather reliable information about dimensions, openings, existing services, and relevant building records. Do not use the AI image as proof of those conditions.
  4. Ask an appropriately qualified professional to assess the actual proposed work and available evidence. Structural changes warrant review by a qualified structural engineer or architect; electrical and plumbing work may call for licensed trade professionals.
  5. Check local requirements before regulated work with the relevant building authority. Confirm which rules, approvals, and evidence apply to your project and location.

For the England-specific situations covered by its guidance, the government’s Approved Document B FAQ advises designers to discuss design intent and necessary evidence with the building-control body before building work. It also notes that common guidance may not be sufficient for unusual or more consequential fire-safety or structural situations, where a detailed, evidence-based understanding of the specific design may be needed. Check the rules for the project’s location

Building and fire requirements vary by jurisdiction, project scope, code edition, amendments, and effective date. Do not assume a rule or approval process described for one place applies elsewhere. Ask the local building authority which requirements govern the proposed work.

For example, California’s HCAI codes-and-regulations index lists separate code parts and notices with their own dates, including 2025 building, electrical, and mechanical code material. It is a California reference, not a universal guide to residential remodeling. California HCAI codes and regulations

AI transparency labels do not certify a design

European Commission information on AI-generated-content transparency concerns disclosure, marking, and detectability within the applicable legal scope and subject to exceptions. The Commission states that the relevant AI Act transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. Those provisions do not certify that an image is structurally sound, feasible, or compliant with building and fire requirements. Compare alternatives by feasibility, not image quality

If the tool suggests another version, assess each option against the same practical questions:

  • Does it fit verified room dimensions and existing openings?
  • Does it alter structural elements or electrical, plumbing, or other building systems?
  • Could it affect fire protection or a route to an exit?
  • Which local rules and approvals apply?
  • Is there enough evidence for a qualified professional to review the actual proposal?

Keep the AI image as a visual reference, then revise it around the real room and any constraints identified during professional review.
