If you’re asking, “Why is Claude Code using so many tokens?”, first work out what you’re looking at: session context, a subscription usage bar, an API cost estimate, or a bill from a cloud provider. In Claude Code, run /usage to inspect usage and /context to see what is occupying context. Then check conversation history, project instructions, tools, and the selected model before changing plans or buying anything.
Start by distinguishing context from a bill
Claude Code’s usage display is useful for diagnosis, but it does not mean the same thing for every billing route. The /usage command shows detailed session token usage for API users. Claude Pro and Max users instead see plan usage bars, activity information, and a usage breakdown; a session cost figure is not an invoice for a subscription.
For API use billed by Anthropic, verify actual charges on the Claude Console Usage page. The dollar figure shown locally in Claude Code is computed locally and is an estimate, not the authoritative billing record. If Claude Code is routed through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Agent Platform, or Microsoft Foundry, usage is billed through that cloud provider account. Gateway credentials may also cause charges to accrue to the credential owner. See Anthropic’s LLM gateway documentation for gateway billing details.
Run the two diagnostic commands
- Enter
/usagein Claude Code. Identify whether you see session token details or subscription plan usage information. - Enter
/context. Review what is consuming context, including conversation history, instructions, and tool-related content.
Anthropic’s cost guidance puts the central relationship plainly: “Token costs scale with context size: the more context Claude processes, the more tokens you use.” See Manage costs effectively.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Find out what is filling the context
A high or rising context load is not necessarily caused by a single unusually large prompt. Claude Code can carry conversation history forward, read project instructions, and incorporate tool outputs. Use /context to investigate what is contributing before removing anything.
Conversation history
Earlier messages remain relevant to a continuing conversation and can add to the context processed in later turns. When switching to unrelated work, use /clear to start fresh. When continuing a task where prior decisions matter, use /compact and tell Claude what information to preserve. Clearing and compacting solve different problems: the first drops an unrelated thread; the second condenses a thread you still need.

Project instructions
Claude Code can read CLAUDE.md and CLAUDE.local.md files in the working directory and parent directories. Additional instructions may be present in child directories and loaded when Claude reads files there. Long or duplicated guidance can therefore contribute to the context Claude starts with or encounters during work. Anthropic describes this behavior in its memory documentation.
Inspect the relevant files and any imported instructions before editing or deleting them. Project guidance may encode required conventions, safety rules, or build steps; trimming useful instructions to reduce context can make the coding task less reliable.

MCP servers and tool results
MCP integrations give Claude Code access to external tools and data, and both tool use and returned results can add context. Run /mcp to review configured servers and disable those you do not need for the current task. Large outputs are a particular thing to check. Anthropic’s MCP documentation discusses high-output tools and configurable limits; consult it for settings supported by your installed version rather than changing environment variables by guesswork.
Check the active model
Run /model to see or change the selected model. You can also choose a model when starting the CLI with --model. Anthropic recommends Sonnet for most coding tasks and reserving Opus for complex architectural or multistep reasoning; model names, availability, and relative economics can change, so check the current model lineup rather than relying on old comparisons. The cost guidance explains the model-selection trade-off.

Use the billing account that actually owns the usage
Before interpreting a usage number, identify how Claude Code is authenticated and routed. The owner of the charge may be an Anthropic API account, a subscription account, a cloud provider, or the owner of gateway credentials. The following distinction helps prevent an estimate or usage bar from being mistaken for a bill.
| What you see or use | What it represents | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|
/usage for API users |
Detailed token usage for the current session; the local dollar figure is an estimate | Claude Console Usage page for Anthropic API charges |
/usage for Pro or Max users |
Plan usage bars, activity information, and a usage breakdown—not a subscription invoice expressed as session cost | The subscription usage display in Claude Code |
| Claude Code routed through Bedrock, Google Cloud Agent Platform, or Microsoft Foundry | Usage billed to the relevant cloud provider account | The billing account for that provider |
| Claude Code using gateway credentials | Charges may accrue to the credential owner | The billing arrangement for the gateway credentials |
For command behavior and setup details, consult the current CLI reference and Get started guide. Documentation and interface labels can change, so version-sensitive behavior should be checked against the installed Claude Code version.
