In the UK, contact the providers or authority for your gas and electricity, water, telephone or broadband, and local property charge when you move. You usually need to notify them rather than assume an account will move with you. Record energy meter readings at handover, give your old energy supplier a forwarding address, and check each provider’s process for the new address. Council Tax guidance below applies to England and Wales; Northern Ireland uses Rates instead.

Which services and accounts should you update?

Service or account What to do What depends on your address or provider
Gas and electricity Tell the suppliers about the move, record final readings at the old home, and provide a forwarding address for the final bill. Ask the supplier what details and readings it needs for the new home.
Water Contact the water provider about both addresses. Ask whether it needs a reading or other handover information. The reviewed UK guidance does not establish one national procedure or a universal right to switch provider.
Telephone and broadband Contact your provider and check service arrangements at the destination. Availability, transfer arrangements, and installation timing depend on the address and provider.
Property charge Tell the relevant local authority about the move and the home you are leaving. In England and Wales this is Council Tax; Northern Ireland has Rates arrangements. The sources cited here do not set out a Scotland-specific process.
Other records Update HMRC and organisations that need your current address. Each organisation may have its own notification process.
TV Licence Check whether your move affects your TV Licence details. Torbay Council’s moving checklist includes this as an address-related task.

What to do before, during, and after the move

Once the move is sufficiently certain

Contact providers and ask what notice, account details, and destination information they require. nidirect’s Northern Ireland moving guidance advises waiting until contracts are exchanged before telling organisations; treat that as guidance for that context, not a universal rule for every UK move or provider. nidirect: Moving to your new home.

When you leave the old home

  1. Take and record the final gas and electricity meter readings at handover. Keep a copy or photograph of the readings.
  2. Give the energy supplier a forwarding address so it can send the final bill. Citizens Advice recommends giving at least 48 hours’ notice and says the final bill is due within 28 days. These are Citizens Advice’s guidance periods, not a statement of every supplier’s contract terms. Citizens Advice: Moving home and dealing with your energy supply.
  3. Ask the water provider whether it needs a final reading or other details for the old address.

When you arrive

  1. Contact the energy and water providers for the new home and give opening readings if requested. The process can vary by property and provider.
  2. Check telephone and broadband availability and arrangements for the new address directly with your provider; do not assume the existing service can be transferred or installed by a particular date.
  3. Tell the local authority responsible for the new property so it can register the relevant charge. Also notify the previous authority if you are closing or changing an existing account.

After the move

Update HMRC and other organisations whose records or post depend on your address. HMRC says to tell it when your address changes; Self Assessment details update after you report the change. GOV.UK: Tell HMRC about a change to your personal details.

How the local property charge differs across the UK

For homes in England and Wales, Council Tax is handled by the local authority. Notify the council connected with the new home and the one connected with the old home as needed to start, close, or change accounts. See GOV.UK: Your property and Council Tax and GOV.UK: Start paying Council Tax.

In Northern Ireland, the relevant local charge is Rates, and nidirect’s moving guidance discusses utility registration and moving-related notifications. Do not apply the England and Wales Council Tax process to Northern Ireland. The sources cited here do not provide a complete Scotland-specific Council Tax process, so check the relevant Scottish local authority’s instructions for a Scottish move.

What to confirm with each provider

  • Whether you need to notify the provider in advance and how much notice it requests.
  • Which account details and old and new addresses it needs.
  • Whether it needs a final or opening meter reading, and how to submit it.
  • How the old account will be closed and any final bill delivered.
  • For broadband and telephone, whether the service is available at the destination and what transfer or installation arrangements apply.

Water arrangements and broadband availability can vary by area and address. The cited moving guidance identifies them as tasks to handle but does not establish a single process that applies to every home.
