Choose a graphics card by matching it to the games or applications you use, your target resolution and settings, and your budget. Then verify the exact card model’s power requirements, connectors, dimensions and cable clearance against your power supply and case. GPU-family names alone do not tell you whether a particular retail card will fit or work with your system.

Start with the performance you actually need

There is no universally best GPU based on its name or specifications alone. Begin by writing down the workload you want to improve and the conditions you expect to use:

  • Workload: the specific games, creative applications or compute tasks you run.
  • Resolution and settings: for gaming, include resolution, graphics quality and whether ray tracing matters.
  • Target: the frame rate or display refresh rate you want to make practical.
  • Features: note any application, display-output or GPU-feature requirement that affects your choice.

Look for recent independent benchmarks that test those same games or applications at comparable settings. Compare average performance and, where reported, how consistently performance holds up. A result at a different resolution or with different settings may not predict what you will see.

After narrowing candidates by workload, weigh performance against the current price of the exact retail model, VRAM capacity, power use and relevant feature support. The official product sources cited here establish specifications, but they do not provide enough independent testing to rank GeForce and Radeon cards universally. AMD reported in 2025 that the RX 9070 averaged over 20% more gaming performance at 1440p than the RX 7900 GRE, and that the RX 9070 XT extended the lead to over 40%. That is AMD’s own comparison, not an independent cross-vendor benchmark; see AMD’s announcement.

Check VRAM and features against your workload

VRAM capacity is one part of workload fit, not a standalone measure of speed. For example, AMD lists the RX 9070 XT with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory and a 256-bit memory interface on its product page. NVIDIA’s graphics-card comparison table lists specifications and features that vary by model. Check the exact card’s specifications and the needs of your games or applications rather than inferring overall performance from memory capacity or a shared family name.

Check the power supply and GPU connectors

Use the PSU recommendation for the precise graphics-card model as a starting point, then account for the rest of the PC. A manufacturer’s recommendation is model-specific; it is not a wattage rule for every card or system. Confirm both the supply’s capacity and whether it has the required connector or an explicitly supported cable or adapter. Do not assume that a cable from another model or a loosely matching connector is suitable.

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5060 WINDFORCE OC 8G Graphics Card, Cooling System, 8GB 128-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, Manufactured by NVIDIA, DisplayPort & HDMI - Video Output Interface, GV-N5060WF2OC-8GD Video Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5060
  • Integrated with 8GB GDDR7 128bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

These manufacturer figures illustrate why the exact model matters. They are not interchangeable recommendations:

Graphics card and edition Published power guidance What to verify
GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition 550 W minimum system power NVIDIA lists compatible cable options and warns that the required rating may increase with system configuration. See NVIDIA’s preparation guidance.
GeForce RTX 4070 / RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition 650 W minimum system power NVIDIA describes 8-pin adapter and PCIe Gen 5 cable options. Check the exact card and PSU documentation. See NVIDIA’s preparation guidance.
GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition 850 W minimum system power; 450 W total graphics power Check the supported cable arrangements and the specifications for the particular add-in card. See NVIDIA’s preparation guidance.
Radeon RX 9070 XT 304 W typical board power; 750 W minimum PSU recommendation These are AMD’s reference product specifications; a retail board-partner card may differ. Verify its recommendation and connectors on the AMD product page and the card maker’s listing.

For the RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition, NVIDIA states: “A higher power rating may be required depending on your system configuration.” Apply that caution to the whole PC rather than treating a minimum figure as a guarantee for every build.

ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

Make sure the card fits the case

Check the dimensions of the exact retail card, not just the GPU family. Compare its length, height and slot thickness with the case’s usable clearance and available expansion slots. Measure around front fans, radiators, drive cages and other parts that can reduce the space shown in the case specification.

Also allow space for the power connector and cable bend. A card can fit on paper but leave too little room to connect or route the cable properly. Keep airflow around the card rather than pressing it against obstructions.

ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX™ 5080 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Graphics Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

NVIDIA’s Founders Edition examples show how much size can vary: the RTX 4060 Ti guidance specifies a 244 mm by 98 mm, two-slot card and an additional 36 mm for power cables; the RTX 4090 guidance specifies a 304 mm by 137 mm, three-slot card and the same additional cable space. These are edition-specific examples, not dimensions for every card using those GPUs. Check the exact card and case documentation; see the RTX 4060 Ti guidance and the RTX 4090 guidance.

Use SFF labels as a screening aid

NVIDIA’s SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce guideline sets limits for qualifying enthusiast cards and compatible small-form-factor cases. The label can help narrow options, but confirm the specific card-and-case combination, including connector and cable clearance, before buying.

Compare the exact candidate cards

Once candidates meet your performance, PSU and case requirements, compare the actual retail models side by side. Board-partner cards built around the same GPU can differ in size and power needs, so reference specifications are not a substitute for the product listing and manufacturer documentation.

  • Performance in the games or applications you use, at your resolution and settings.
  • Current price for the exact retailer listing and model variant.
  • VRAM capacity and any application-specific feature or display-output requirement.
  • Board power and the recommended PSU for that exact model.
  • Power connector type and whether your PSU has a compatible cable or supported adapter.
  • Length, height, slot thickness, cable-bend room and airflow in your actual case.
  • Noise, cooling, warranty and vendor support, based on reliable information for that specific card.

Before purchase, verify the exact SKU’s dimensions, connectors and power recommendation in its manufacturer listing. Check your motherboard and GPU documentation for the exact hardware combination rather than assuming every PCIe generation or motherboard configuration behaves identically.
