If Safari isn’t filling a saved password, first check Safari > Settings > AutoFill and make sure Usernames and passwords is selected. Then confirm the login is actually saved in Passwords, isn’t excluded, and is available on this Mac. The steps below apply to Safari on macOS; other browsers have their own password settings.
1. Turn on password AutoFill in Safari
In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > AutoFill, then select Usernames and passwords. This setting allows Safari to fill saved website credentials when you return to a sign-in page. See Apple’s Safari AutoFill settings and AutoFill troubleshooting.
Return to the sign-in page and check whether Safari offers the saved account. If it doesn’t, check that the record exists and is usable.
2. Make sure the password is saved and available
Where you find saved credentials depends on macOS: on macOS Sequoia, open the Passwords app and unlock it; on macOS Sonoma or earlier, look in System Settings > Passwords or Safari > Settings > Passwords. Apple’s current guidance describes these locations in Find saved passwords and passkeys on your Mac.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Search for the website and account, then check the entry. A blank password or an entry marked as never saved cannot be filled as a usable login. If it is blank or marked never saved, change the password on the website and save it when Safari offers to do so, following Apple’s Safari password guidance.
- In Passwords, select All rather than a single group, so the search isn’t limited to one collection.
- Check Deleted or Recently Deleted if the record is missing from the main list.
- If the login is in a shared group, confirm this Mac’s software is compatible. Apple says shared-group items appear only on devices with compatible software.
3. Remove the site from Safari’s excluded list
Safari can remember that you declined to save a password for a particular site. In Passwords, choose Passwords > Settings > Show excluded websites. If the site appears, remove it from the list. Safari can then offer to save the login the next time you enter it. Apple explains this in See the websites you excluded from automatically filling in passwords on Mac.

4. Check Touch ID only if you use it
Touch ID is an optional way to authorize password autofill; it is not required for saved passwords to work. If you expect Touch ID to fill passwords, open Apple menu > System Settings > Touch ID & Password and turn on Use Touch ID for autofilling passwords. This option applies only when compatible Touch ID hardware is available. Apple documents the setting in its Safari password instructions.
5. Check Private Browsing and iCloud Keychain
Private Browsing
Safari does not save account names and passwords while Private Browsing is on, so a login entered in a private window may not become a saved credential. If Safari never offered to save that login, try signing in from a regular Safari window and save it when prompted. Apple notes this behavior in its iCloud Keychain troubleshooting guidance.

iCloud Keychain and syncing
If the password is saved on another Apple device but missing on this Mac, check whether iCloud Keychain is enabled and syncing on the devices. Apple also recommends checking Apple System Status for an outage and updating devices to current system software. Follow Apple’s iCloud Keychain sync troubleshooting for the relevant device settings.

If AutoFill is enabled and the saved record is correct, Safari may still be unable to fill a particular page. Apple says some websites request that passwords not be saved or autofilled, and Safari may not identify a page’s username and password fields. In those cases, changing a Mac setting may not fix the site. You can still open Passwords, find the login, and copy its details into the site manually; avoid pasting a password into an unexpected field or page.
