Start with Android’s built-in Digital Wellbeing tools if you want to see where your time goes, set app timers, or pause selected apps during a schedule. If those controls do not fit the problem, choose a third-party app by the way it intervenes: a pause before opening, a time limit, a scheduled block, a stricter restriction, or controls shared across devices. No option is established as universally most effective; check its current features, permissions, privacy disclosures, and compatibility with your phone before relying on it.
Start with Digital Wellbeing on your Android phone
You may not need to install anything. On supported Android devices, Digital Wellbeing provides usage information, app timers, and Focus mode. Open Settings and look for Digital Wellbeing & parental controls; labels and steps can vary by device. Google’s Digital Wellbeing help page explains the available controls and setup.
- Check your usage: Open Digital Wellbeing and review the usage chart. Identify the specific app or time of day that is taking more attention than you want.
- Choose a rule that fits: If you lose track of time in one app, try an app timer. If you want fewer interruptions during predictable work or rest periods, try Focus mode or a schedule.
- Try the rule in daily use: Notice whether it fits essential uses as well as distractions, and whether you routinely dismiss or bypass it. Adjust the rule if it creates friction at the wrong times.
Google notes that some work or school accounts may not support app timers. If a setting is missing or behaves differently, check your device’s Android version, account type, and manufacturer-specific instructions rather than assuming every Android phone has the same menus.
Match the app’s intervention to your habit
Third-party tools describe different ways to interrupt phone use. Product pages explain what developers say their apps do; they are not independent head-to-head tests of effectiveness. Use this comparison to identify what to investigate, not as a ranking.

Choose based on what happens when you reach for your phone
If you open apps automatically
Consider a tool such as one sec, whose developer describes adding an intentional interruption before selected apps open. That kind of pause is different from a daily cap: it targets the moment of automatic access. Verify which features are available on Android and whether they suit your needs before installing.
If you lose track of minutes in one app
Start with an app timer in Digital Wellbeing. If you need rules beyond the built-in option, compare third-party blocking settings and schedules. Check whether the app allows exceptions or easy bypasses, since an overly rigid limit can interfere with a necessary task.

- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.

- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
If you need a block at a predictable time
Use Focus mode or a scheduled block for recurring periods such as focused work. Confirm which apps can be included and how the schedule behaves on your specific phone. A schedule is not the same as an intervention every time you open an app.
If ordinary limits are easy to dismiss
A stricter blocker may be worth considering, but understand its required permissions and recovery steps first. Stay Focused, for example, says it relies on Android’s Accessibility permission and offers settings intended to make restrictions harder to disable. Read the current permission explanation and privacy disclosures; a permission is neither automatically unsafe nor automatically appropriate simply because a developer requests it.

If the distraction moves to a computer or tablet
Cross-device controls may matter more than a stronger phone-only block. Freedom describes synced lists and schedules across supported devices, but verify that the Android features and the devices you use are included in its current offering.
Check compatibility, permissions, and current terms
Before depending on a third-party blocker, review its current Google Play listing and developer privacy information. App capabilities, availability by country, free and paid feature boundaries, prices, and compatibility can change. Confirm the details on the actual phone and account you plan to use.

- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- Permissions: Identify which permissions are required for the specific feature you want and whether the developer explains why. Do not grant a permission without understanding its purpose.
- Background operation: Check whether the app needs to keep running in the background and whether battery settings on your phone could affect its operation.
- Bypass and recovery: Find out how a block can be paused, changed, or recovered if it prevents access to something important. Consider this before enabling settings designed to make restrictions difficult to disable.
- Current availability and cost: Check the listing for your region and your device. Do not assume a feature is free, included on Android, or available in every country based on an older description.
Make the rule practical, then reassess it
Try one clear rule for a short period: a timer for one app, a scheduled focus window, or a deliberate pause before opening a habitual distraction. Pay attention to whether the rule fits legitimate needs and whether you keep bypassing it. If it does not fit, revise the rule or try a different kind of intervention; installing a blocker alone does not establish that your screen time will fall.
For bedtime, consider a non-phone alarm
If your aim is to leave the phone outside the bedroom, a separate alarm clock can remove one reason to keep it nearby. This is an optional practical aid, not an app requirement. The Week has discussed placing a phone outside the bedroom and using a separate alarm; that suggestion is not a test or endorsement of a specific clock (The Week).
