Their manifest declares configuration and host-specific behavior; supported events invoke callback functions that receive event context and return cards. What an add-on can show depends on the host: Gmail supports homepage and message contexts, while Drive supports homepages and selected-item contexts. Docs and Sheets are also named hosts, but their specific behavior should not be assumed to match Gmail or Drive.
What a Google Workspace add-on is
A Workspace add-on is an application integrated into a Workspace host such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, or Sheets. It can provide an interface in the host, streamline tasks, move data between Google applications, or connect to non-Google services. Google describes Workspace add-ons and Editor add-ons as separate add-on types, with different interface and trigger models. This article concerns Workspace add-ons, not Editor add-ons. Google’s add-ons overview and add-on types guide explain the distinction.
How an add-on responds to a host event
- The manifest declares configuration. It describes the add-on’s appearance and behavior, including its interface, scopes, triggers, and host-specific functionality. Shared and app-specific settings are declared in the add-on configuration. See Google’s Workspace add-on manifest guide.
- A supported event occurs. Depending on the host and configuration, this might be opening a Gmail message or selecting an item in Drive. The available event types vary by host.
- The trigger invokes a callback. The event object passed to the function includes host context and other event information, which the add-on can use to decide what to display or do.
- The callback returns a card interface. In Google’s documented model, a trigger function returns one Card or an array of Cards. Apps Script projects can build these with the Card service. The trigger guide and build guide describe this flow.
Workspace add-ons use their manifest-based triggers; they do not use generic Apps Script simple or installable triggers as their trigger system. Editor add-ons have a distinct trigger model.
What differs across Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Sheets
| Host | Documented interface or context | Client availability established by the cited guide |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | Homepage; contextual interface while reading or composing a message; message drafts can be created in response to user actions. | Google documents Gmail add-ons for desktop and mobile clients. |
| Drive | Homepage; contextual interface based on selected Drive items. | Google’s Drive guide says add-ons cannot yet extend Drive on mobile clients. |
| Docs | Named by Google as a Workspace add-on host; the specific trigger types and interaction limits are not established here. | Not stated in the cited host-specific evidence. |
| Sheets | Named by Google as a Workspace add-on host; the specific trigger types and interaction limits are not established here. | Not stated in the cited host-specific evidence. |
Gmail: message-aware and compose experiences
A Gmail add-on can provide a homepage or surface contextual UI while a user reads or composes a message. Google also documents creating message drafts in response to user actions. For example, a message contextual trigger runs when a message is opened with the add-on active; the callback can then build a card using the message context. Google covers these behaviors in its Gmail add-on guide and message UI guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Drive: homepage and selected-item context
A Drive add-on can show a homepage or a contextual interface based on the items selected in Drive. The documented mobile limitation is specific to Drive: Google’s Drive add-on guide says add-ons cannot yet extend Drive on mobile clients.
Docs and Sheets: hosts, but not a feature-by-feature match
Google identifies Docs and Sheets as Workspace add-on hosts, and its manifest model permits host-specific settings. That establishes that they belong to the platform, not that their triggers, interaction limits, or client support match Gmail or Drive. The cited host-specific evidence does not provide enough detail to make a reliable Docs-versus-Sheets comparison.

Installation, authorization, and access
Users can install published add-ons from the relevant host app or from Google Workspace Marketplace. A domain administrator can also install add-ons on behalf of users. At first use, the host presents an authorization card or dialog describing the requested access, which may include access to the current document or Sheet. A user who denies authorization cannot use the add-on. See Google’s installation and authorization guide.

Google’s build process includes choosing host applications, setting up the project, configuring its appearance and behavior, implementing card UI and manifest trigger functions, checking OAuth scopes, testing, and publishing. The architecture is not necessarily the same for every add-on: Google documents both Apps Script and HTTP approaches. The Workspace add-on build guide provides the implementation path.
