If a lithium-ion battery is swollen or damaged, stop using and charging the device. If it is smoking, on fire, actively venting, or otherwise an immediate danger, leave the area and call your local emergency number. If there is no immediate threat, do not handle or dismantle the battery; contact the manufacturer and your local waste service for instructions before storing or transporting it.
Check for warning signs and stop use
Swelling or a misshapen battery is damage and a potential fire hazard, even if the device still works or the swelling seems slight. Other warning signs include unusual heat, a strange chemical odor, leakage, cracks, dents, punctures, discoloration, smoke, or hissing, popping, or crackling sounds. The US Environmental Protection Agency identifies swelling as battery damage; Seattle Fire and the Oregon State Fire Marshal also describe warning signs.
- Stop using and charging the device.
- Do not puncture, crush, squeeze, open, or dismantle the battery.
- Do not put the battery or a device containing it in household rubbish or ordinary curbside recycling.
Decide whether this is an emergency

The US Fire Administration advises people in the United States to evacuate and call 911. Seattle Fire advises closing the door while exiting if it is safe to do so; West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue gives the UK instruction to get out, stay out, and call 999. Use the emergency number for your location, not one listed for another jurisdiction.
If there is no immediate threat, get local instructions
Contact the product or battery manufacturer or retailer, as well as your municipality or local household hazardous-waste program. Follow their directions for your particular battery and location. Collection options and facility rules vary; a standard battery drop-off bin should not be assumed to accept damaged batteries.

Before taking a damaged battery anywhere, call the receiving site and confirm that it accepts it and how it wants you to proceed. The Oregon State Fire Marshal notes that damaged batteries may need special instructions or may not be accepted at a facility. Health Canada classifies lithium-ion batteries as hazardous waste and directs people to their municipality. The EPA’s disposal guidance is US-focused; readers elsewhere should contact their own waste authority.
Temporary storage or moving: only if it is safe
If there is no imminent threat, keep the device in a safe place away from flammable materials while you arrange disposal. The EPA mentions a bucket containing a fire suppressant such as sand or kitty litter as one possible option. Seattle Fire describes moving a device outside into a metal container with a lid only when doing so is safe. These are conditional suggestions, not universal packaging or transport instructions.

Do not attempt to move or contain a battery that is hot, smoking, venting, leaking, or otherwise an immediate danger. Leave it alone, move away, and contact emergency services.
