If you want AI chat with stronger privacy protections than Meta AI, choose based on the protection you need: Duck.ai says chats are not stored by default; Ollama can run models locally; and ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude offer controls over model improvement or chat handling. None is an across-the-board privacy winner: training, retention, human review, account linkage, and processing location are separate questions.
How to choose a private AI chat alternative
“Private” can mean that chats are excluded from model training, not retained in history, unavailable for human review, unlinked from an account, or processed on your own device rather than a company’s servers. A service may offer one protection without offering all the others.
- Model training: Check whether prompts and responses can improve models, and which setting or chat mode changes that.
- Storage and deletion: Find out whether conversations are saved and what deletion removes or leaves in backup, safety, or legal systems.
- Review and exceptions: Feedback, abuse prevention, moderation, and legal obligations may be handled differently from ordinary chats.
- Account and personalization: Consider whether chat activity is linked to an account or used with past chats, location, or connected apps.
- Processing location and features: A hosted model, privacy intermediary, local model, file upload, voice feature, or sync option may each have different handling.
Official policies describe each provider’s own practices, not a shared independent test. The comparison below therefore matches services to particular privacy needs rather than ranking them on an unqualified “most private” scale.

Duck.ai: hosted chat with no storage by default
DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai does not record or store chats by default, and that chats are not used to train chat models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying model providers. It also describes a “zero provider visibility” mode for some models, in which requests are anonymized and processed in a trusted execution environment. Those are DuckDuckGo’s stated service behaviors, not an independent audit or a guarantee covering every model and feature. DuckDuckGo’s privacy documentation explains the qualifications.

Optional Sync & Backup stores chats in end-to-end encrypted form. Users may also choose to share conversations through feedback. DuckDuckGo notes that provider-specific prompt caching and legal or abuse exceptions can apply; image and file uploads have their own moderation-scanning and retention exceptions. If your priority is a hosted chat with a no-storage default, review those feature-specific terms before sharing sensitive material.
Ollama: process chats locally
Ollama offers a different privacy approach: local processing rather than a hosted chat service. Ollama says it does not collect, store, transmit, or have access to prompts, responses, or model interactions processed locally, though it may collect limited device and usage metadata. Its privacy policy distinguishes those interactions from cloud-hosted models, whose content is processed transiently to provide the service.
Local execution can reduce exposure of prompt content to a cloud provider, but it does not make every setup automatically private. Model choice, extensions, downloads, network connections, and configuration matter. Minimum hardware requirements and comparative model quality are not established here, so treat local setup as a separate technical choice rather than a guaranteed plug-and-play replacement.

ChatGPT: use controls for model improvement and account data
OpenAI says users control whether chats are used to improve its models and can access, export, and delete conversations and associated account data. It also says it does not sell user data or share conversations with advertisers or marketing partners. See OpenAI’s consumer privacy page for its current controls and details.
Having controls does not mean every ChatGPT mode has identical retention behavior. Check the current setting and the terms for the mode or feature you plan to use, especially before assuming that a chat excluded from model improvement is also absent from history or handled identically for safety purposes.
Gemini: distinguish Temporary Chat from Keep Activity
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice says Temporary Chats are not used to train Google’s AI models. It separately says that when Keep Activity is off, future chats are not used to improve those models if the user does not submit feedback. Those are distinct conditions, not interchangeable names for one privacy setting.

The notice also covers prompts and uploads, account activity, personalization, location, and connected apps. Google says Gemini may use past chats for personalization when Memory is on, and describes Temporary Chat as an option for conversations a user does not want remembered or used to personalize the experience. Claude: training, deletion, and safety retention are different
Anthropic says users can turn off model improvement, and that Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Deleting a conversation removes it from chat history immediately; Anthropic says deletion from backend storage systems occurs within 30 days. These statements describe different stages of handling, not instant removal from every system.

If a user allows chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, Anthropic says data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. It also describes longer retention for inputs and outputs flagged by automated trust and safety systems, trust and safety classification scores, feedback, and legally required or policy-enforcement cases. What Meta AI’s stated policy says
Meta’s own explanation distinguishes content shared publicly from private communications. It says public Facebook and Instagram posts were used to train the generative AI models discussed in that explanation, while private posts were not. Meta also says private messages with friends and family are not used to train its AIs unless someone chooses to share them with AI.
Meta says information shared in generative AI interactions may be used to improve products and for other purposes, that questions may be shared with trusted partners for relevant responses, and that automated systems and people review interactions. It describes a /reset-ai command for deleting information shared in chats across Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. These are Meta’s statements, in an explanation updated November 21, 2025—not an independent audit or a complete account of every current product-specific rule. Practical precautions for any AI chat
- Do not enter passwords, payment details, private keys, or confidential information unless you have verified that the service and feature meet your requirements.
- Check the setting that applies to the specific conversation mode; account-wide controls may not describe every feature’s behavior.
- Treat uploads, feedback, connected apps, voice, and sync as separate data flows until the provider’s policy says otherwise.
- For local AI, confirm the model is running locally and that extensions or other connected services are not sending prompts elsewhere.
