“Hidden features” in Windows 11 can mean several different things: optional components you install, developer settings, advanced configuration options, or features Microsoft is gradually rolling out. There is no single switch that reveals them all. Start with the supported Settings page for the feature you need, check that it applies to your Windows release and device, and make a recovery plan before changing system-level settings.

How do I find hidden features in Windows 11?

First identify what kind of feature you mean. Optional Windows components are installable through Settings; developer and advanced settings are intended for specific uses; and a gradual rollout feature may not yet be available on your device. These are different categories, not one hidden-features menu.

Check your Windows release before following a guide: open Settings > System > About and review the Windows specifications. Settings names and locations can change between releases and updates. Microsoft says the Optional features interface may differ on supported Windows versions that do not have the latest cumulative update. If the path below is not present, search Settings for “Optional features.”

How do I turn on optional features?

Windows calls optional installable components “Features on Demand.” Use Settings when you know which component you need and it is listed for your device. Microsoft documents this supported route in its Windows feature management guidance.

  1. Open Settings > System > Optional features.
  2. Beside Add an optional feature, select View features.
  3. Find and select the component you need. Review its details and selection before proceeding.
  4. Select Next, review the changes, then select Add.
  5. Wait for installation to finish. Restart only if Windows asks you to.

The available list can depend on the Windows release, edition, device configuration, and organizational policy. On a work- or school-managed PC, an administrator may control or hide access to optional features; check with them rather than trying to work around the restriction.

When PowerShell is appropriate

Administrators who know the exact feature name, or who manage Windows images, can use Microsoft’s documented PowerShell cmdlet Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature. Microsoft’s reference shows its use with an online Windows installation or an offline image; for example, the online form uses -Online with a named feature. See the Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature reference for syntax and parameters.

Do not guess feature names or paste a command from an unreviewed post. The command reference is for Windows Server 2025 and does not establish that every feature is present or appropriate on every Windows 11 edition. Confirm the component, dependencies, and target before running it.

Where is “Turn Windows features on or off”?

The classic Control Panel dialog may still be available, but the supported Settings page is the clearest starting point for adding ordinary optional features on current Windows 11 interfaces. Search Start or Settings for “Turn Windows features on or off” if you specifically need that dialog. Do not assume that its list is the same as the Settings list or that every item is suitable for your device; check what a component does before enabling it.

Which kind of feature should I use?

Approach Best for Limit or caution
Settings > System > Optional features Supported optional Windows components Available items, interface, and access can vary by build and policy. Microsoft documentation.
Documented PowerShell cmdlet Administrators who know the exact feature name or manage images Feature names, dependencies, and source handling require care; the reference does not guarantee availability on every Windows 11 edition. Microsoft documentation.
Developer or advanced settings A specific development or configuration task Purpose and location depend on the release; unnecessary changes add complexity. Advanced Windows Settings and Settings for developers.
Windows Sandbox Testing software in an isolated environment Availability and setup depend on Windows configuration; it is not a guarantee that all activity is risk-free. Microsoft FAQ.
Undocumented feature-ID utilities No general recommendation IDs may be build-specific, and there is no verified general safety guarantee for forcing staged features.

Developer and advanced settings

Turn on a developer setting only when a development task calls for it. Microsoft documents developer options and advanced settings, but their placement changes across releases. In Windows 11 version 25H2 and later, Microsoft says former “For developers” settings are surfaced under Advanced. Use the supported page for your installed release instead of relying on screenshots or instructions for another build.

These settings are not a general unlock switch. Before enabling one, read its description and consider whether the task actually requires it. Microsoft’s Advanced Windows Settings and developer settings guidance describe their intended context and release-dependent placement.

Windows Sandbox for software testing

Windows Sandbox provides an isolated environment for testing software without installing it on the host in the usual way. Microsoft describes its use case as: “Test software features risk-free: Easily test out software without the need for installing or uninstalling on your host machine.” That wording describes the intended use, not a guarantee that every activity is risk-free. Sandbox is not available in every configuration and is distinct from setting up a fully configured Hyper-V virtual machine. Microsoft also notes that beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2, the older Sandbox app attempts to download its latest version from Microsoft Store. Check the current requirements and availability for your device in the Windows Sandbox FAQ.

Is it safe to enable hidden Windows features?

It depends on what the feature does and whether it is supported on your device. Prefer Windows Settings or a Microsoft-documented command over registry edits and feature-ID recipes. A feature being present in a list does not mean you need it, and a feature that is gradually rolling out may not be ready or compatible on every build.

How do I prepare to undo a Windows feature change?

For system-level changes, consider creating a restore point before you begin, if System Protection is available, and keep a separate current backup of important personal files. Microsoft describes System Protection as “a recovery feature designed to help you safeguard your system settings.” A restore point can capture system files, installed applications, the Windows Registry, and settings; it is not a backup of personal documents and other files.

  1. Search Start for Create a restore point.
  2. In System Properties, select the system drive and choose Configure if System Protection needs to be enabled and is available on your device.
  3. Return to System Properties, select Create, and give the restore point a clear name that identifies the change you are about to make.
  4. Separately back up important personal files. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options also describe recovery media; a USB recovery drive is an optional preparation item, not a requirement for adding an optional feature.

If you need to roll back, search Start for Create a restore point, open System Properties, and choose System Restore if it is available. Review the restore point and affected programs shown before confirming: System Restore reverts the system configuration, applications, Registry, and settings to their earlier state, and recovery can discard later changes. Follow Microsoft’s System Restore instructions for your Windows version.

Restore-point timing and storage behavior should not be treated as universal. Microsoft’s point-in-time restore documentation describes configuration-specific defaults—approximately every 24 hours, retention up to 72 hours, and a default disk-use cap of 2% on supported configurations—but these figures do not apply to all Windows 11 systems or to classic System Protection restore points. See Microsoft’s point-in-time restore documentation.
