You can screen your home by checking your electrical panel, parking location, and charging needs, but those clues cannot confirm that a new Level 2 charger is safe to install. Before choosing equipment or adding a circuit, ask a licensed electrician to calculate the home’s electrical load and assess the installation. A 100-amp service may be sufficient in some homes; a 200-amp panel is not automatic approval.
Start with the charging your vehicle actually needs
Consider whether you drive a plug-in hybrid or a battery-electric vehicle, your typical daily mileage, and how long the vehicle stays parked. A standard 120-volt Level 1 outlet may meet the needs of some drivers, particularly those with modest daily mileage. Level 2 charging uses 240-volt equipment, charges faster, and generally requires a dedicated circuit and more installation work. Compare the options using your driving pattern and the vehicle’s charging capability, rather than assuming every home needs Level 2. See the ENERGY STAR home electrification guidance and the U.S. Department of Energy’s overview of home EV charging.
Check your panel for clues—not a verdict
Look at the main electrical panel and write down the main-breaker or service rating. Note whether the panel appears to have room for another breaker, and list large electrical loads such as electric heating, cooking, water heating, and clothes drying. Do not remove the panel cover or work inside the panel.
ENERGY STAR uses service ratings and available panel spaces as preliminary screening clues. Its examples associate 65-, 100-, or 125-amp services and very few or no available spaces with a greater chance that an upgrade may be needed; 200- or 225-amp service and several spare spaces are more favorable. These examples are not pass/fail thresholds. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that even 100-amp service can sometimes support charging, depending on the home’s existing loads. Conversely, a larger service rating or empty breaker spaces do not prove there is enough capacity.

- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
Have an electrician assess capacity before deciding on a charger or circuit. EPA’s home-charging guidance says an electrician can perform a load calculation to determine whether the existing panel can handle the proposed charger or whether upgrades might be needed.
Ask an electrician to compare capacity options
Ask a licensed electrician to calculate the home’s load with the proposed charger and existing or planned appliances included. Share your panel observations and charging needs, and ask which solution is appropriate for the house and local requirements.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
- Lower-powered Level 2 charging: Ask whether a lower-output charger can meet your driving needs while fitting the home’s available capacity.
- Load management: Ask whether a compatible system can manage charging alongside other household loads.
- Circuit sharing: Ask whether an appropriate circuit-sharing arrangement is possible for your equipment and home.
- Service or panel work: If alternatives are unsuitable, ask what upgrade is needed and why.
EPA recommends discussing load management and future demand, such as a second EV or electric heat-pump appliances. The answer depends on the actual equipment and household; these options should be evaluated by the electrician rather than treated as guaranteed substitutes for an upgrade.
Walk through the proposed charger location
Show the electrician where the vehicle parks and where you would like the charger mounted. The route from the panel to the parking space, cable reach, outdoor exposure, and installation format can affect equipment choice and the work involved. Ask the electrician to account for wiring distance, any wall or trench route, and whether the charger will be hardwired or connected through a receptacle.

For an equipment-sizing example, EPA says a 40-amp Level 2 charger would require a dedicated 50-amp electrical circuit. Do not use that example as a recommendation for your home: the circuit and charger must be selected for the specific equipment and load calculation. EPA also says chargers rated at 48 amps or higher are usually required to be hardwired; confirm the installation requirements for the particular charger with your electrician.
Confirm local permits, inspections, and utility details
Permit and inspection rules depend on your location. Ask the electrician who will obtain any required permit and arrange inspection, and verify requirements with your local building or electrical authority. For example, the City of Raleigh requires a permit before work begins and an inspection after installation; that rule is specific to Raleigh, North Carolina, not a nationwide requirement.

If an electrician identifies more than one workable approach, compare proposals using the same details rather than comparing charger prices alone.
- Output and circuit: Charger amperage, required circuit, and compatibility with the vehicle’s onboard charging capability.
- Installation format: Hardwired or receptacle connection, plus the circuit work required.
- Site fit: Indoor or outdoor suitability, cable reach, and route from panel to parking spot.
- Load management: Whether charging shares capacity with other appliances and how the system behaves when household demand is high.
- Total scope: Charger, wiring distance, circuit, any panel or service changes, permit, and inspection. Obtain local quotes instead of relying on generic online cost ranges.
- Safety and compatibility: Choose appropriately safety-certified equipment and confirm connector compatibility. DOE recommends safety-certified charging equipment and a certified electrical contractor.
Choose a Level 2 charger only after the electrical assessment establishes a suitable setup. Match the equipment to the electrician’s recommendations, the vehicle connector, the required output, the installation location, and cable length.
