On macOS Sequoia, open the Passwords app, authenticate with Touch ID or your Mac login password, then select a saved account. On macOS Sonoma or earlier, find saved passwords in System Settings or Safari settings instead. The steps below show how to reveal, change, or remove an entry—and what deletion does not do.

Find saved passwords on your Mac

The route depends on your macOS version. Apple’s current instructions use the Passwords app for macOS Sequoia and a settings route for Sonoma or earlier. See Apple’s version-specific instructions if you are unsure which interface applies.

macOS Sequoia

  1. Open the Passwords app.
  2. Authenticate with Touch ID or your Mac user account password.
  3. Select All or a group, then choose the account or website you need.

macOS Sonoma or earlier

  1. Choose either Apple menu > System Settings > Passwords or Safari > Settings > Passwords.
  2. Authenticate with Touch ID or your Mac user account password.
  3. Select the account or website to open its saved details.

Apple’s Passwords user guide explains that Passwords can hold website and app logins, passkeys, verification codes, Wi-Fi passwords, Sign in with Apple entries, and credentials shared with groups. You can search or sort entries.

View or edit a saved password

Reveal the password

In the Passwords app, select the account under All. Hover over the dots beside Password to reveal the saved password. You may need to authenticate first.

Update saved details

Open the account’s details and choose Edit. Change the saved information, then choose Save. Editing the entry in Passwords updates what your Mac stores; if you want to change the actual login credential, change it with the website or app too, then update the saved entry to match.

Delete a saved password or passkey

  1. In Passwords, select the account or passkey.
  2. Choose Edit, then Delete Password or Delete Passkey.
  3. Confirm the deletion.

Removing an entry from Passwords does not ordinarily change or remove the password or passkey at the website or app where it was created. Sign in with Apple accounts are an exception; consult Apple’s instructions for removing a password or passkey before deleting an entry tied to one. If your goal is to stop using a credential, revoke or change it through the relevant service as well.

Why can’t you find a saved password?

  • Check All: A group or other narrow view may not show every entry.
  • Check Deleted or Recently Deleted: The entry may have been removed. If it is there, use the available recovery option before it is permanently deleted.
  • Check iCloud Keychain: To keep credentials updated across Apple devices, sign in to the same Apple Account and turn on Passwords in iCloud settings.
  • Check shared-group compatibility: Credentials shared with a group may only appear on devices running compatible software.

Apple describes these and other Passwords preferences in its Mac Passwords settings guide.

Use Passwords security features thoughtfully

Passwords includes a Security section with recommendations to change weak passwords. Settings can also detect passwords that appear in known data leaks, suggest strong passwords, and automatically create passkeys. These tools can help you spot issues, but enabling them does not guarantee that an account is secure; use unique credentials and follow the service’s own security guidance.
