In Signal65’s March 2026 comparison, Cursor BugBot had the highest reported precision, CodeRabbit found the most critical bugs and had nearly the same precision, and Qodo Merge found the most true positives but also more false positives. Those results come from one bounded study, not a guarantee about your repositories. The right tool depends on where your team reviews code, how much repository context it needs, which findings matter, and how much review noise and usage cost you can accept.
Which AI code review tool should you shortlist?
Start with the review workflow your team wants to improve, then use comparative scores as one input—not as a standalone ranking.
| Tool | Evidence from Signal65’s March 2026 study | Workflow documented in the cited sources |
|---|---|---|
| CodeRabbit | 95.88% precision; 93 true positives; 25 critical bugs, the largest critical-bug count in the comparison; 4 false positives. | Not stated in the sources cited here. |
| Cursor BugBot | 95.95% precision, the highest measured; 71 true positives; 3 false positives. | Not stated in the sources cited here. |
| Qodo Merge | 129 true positives, the largest count; 81.13% precision; 30 false positives. | Not stated in the sources cited here. |
| GitHub Copilot code review | 64.35% precision; 74 true positives; 41 false positives. | GitHub.com, CLI, Mobile, several IDEs, and Azure DevOps public preview, according to GitHub’s documentation. |
| Greptile | 86.36% precision; 38 true positives. | Not stated in the sources cited here. |
| Amazon Q Developer | Not included in the Signal65 comparison. | IDE review of changed code, a file, or a whole project, according to AWS documentation. |
The table separates study results from documented workflow details. It does not imply that every tool was assessed against the same product configuration or that tools absent from the study performed poorly.
What Signal65’s bug-detection comparison does—and does not—show
Signal65’s report, Evaluating AI Code Review Tools: A Real-World Bug Detection Study, is dated March 2026 and authored by Mitch Lewis, a Performance Analyst at Signal65. The report indicates a partnership, which is relevant context when weighing its conclusions. It tested five tools—CodeRabbit, Cursor BugBot, GitHub Copilot, Greptile, and Qodo Merge—on historical bug-introducing pull requests from six open-source repositories: vLLM (Python), Elasticsearch (Java), Axios (JavaScript), Next.js (TypeScript), Cilium (Go), and Puma (Ruby).

For each repository, the evaluators selected ten bug-introducing PRs, rewound branches to just before the bug, ran each tool on the same PRs in isolated repositories using default settings, and manually graded results. A bug counted only if the tool left an inline comment tied to specific code lines. See the Signal65 report for its methodology and results.
Precision and finding count answer different questions
Precision indicates how much of a tool’s output was judged correct in that evaluation; true positives count correctly identified bugs. A tool can produce more correct findings overall while also producing more incorrect ones. Cursor BugBot’s measured precision was 95.95%, just above CodeRabbit’s 95.88%, while CodeRabbit had more true positives (93 versus 71) and the study’s highest critical-bug count (25). Qodo Merge found 129 true positives, but its reported precision was 81.13% and it had 30 false positives. Treat these as separate trade-offs, not a single score that crowns one tool best.

In the same evaluation, GitHub Copilot had 64.35% precision, 74 true positives, and 41 false positives; Greptile had 86.36% precision and 38 true positives. The supplied report figures do not state false-positive counts for every tool, so this comparison does not fill in missing counts.
Why the results may not transfer to your pull requests
The evaluation covers six repositories, ten historical bug-introducing PRs per repository, specific tool versions and default settings, and one grading rule based on inline comments. It does not establish performance on every language, private codebase, PR type, custom configuration, or current release. In particular, an evaluation focused on historical bug-introducing PRs is not a complete test of security coverage, maintainability advice, or day-to-day review usefulness.

What to check before choosing a tool
Workflow fit can matter as much as a benchmark result. Compare candidates against the work your developers actually do.
- Where review runs: Determine whether you need feedback in the pull-request host, an IDE, a CLI, or CI. Availability can differ by platform and by preview status.
- How much context it can use: Check whether it reviews only the diff, an active file, a whole project, or gathers broader repository context.
- What it is designed to flag: Separate correctness bugs from security vulnerabilities, secrets, infrastructure-as-code problems, dependencies, deployment risks, and code quality issues.
- Coverage and exclusions: Confirm supported languages and whether generated files, tests, open-source code, or other files are excluded.
- Operational requirements: Check organization policies, permissions, runner availability, setup effort, and whether capabilities are generally available or in preview.
- Noise and cost: Measure actionable versus incorrect comments on your code, and include usage credits, seats, CI minutes, or runner costs where applicable.
- Product lifecycle: Verify current support and availability before building a required workflow around a plugin or preview feature.
GitHub Copilot code review: broad review locations, usage-based costs
GitHub documents Copilot code review on GitHub.com, GitHub CLI, GitHub Mobile, VS Code, Visual Studio, Xcode, JetBrains IDEs, and Azure DevOps public preview. GitHub says it “reviews code written in any language, and provides feedback.” Organization policy settings may affect availability. Organizations on Business and Enterprise can enable review for users without a Copilot license when AI credit paid usage is enabled; that access is not available in IDEs. See GitHub’s code review documentation for current conditions.

GitHub describes agentic capabilities that gather full-project context and can pass suggestions to Copilot cloud agent to create a pull request with fixes. The cloud-agent handoff is public preview. These agentic features use GitHub Actions runners; if runners are unavailable, review can still be generated with more limited functionality.
GitHub estimates a typical Lite review at $0.05–$1 USD in AI credits and a Balanced review at $0.25–$5 USD. These are estimates, not fixed per-PR prices: they vary with PR size and custom instructions, and exclude GitHub Actions minutes.

Amazon Q Developer: IDE review at several code scopes
AWS documents Amazon Q Developer code review in an IDE at changed-code, file, or whole-project scope. Its documented issue types include static application security testing, secrets detection, infrastructure-as-code issues, code quality, deployment risks, and software composition analysis. AWS says the review combines generative AI with rule-based automatic reasoning. Its filtering excludes unsupported languages, test code, and open-source code. Consult AWS’s review documentation for details.
AWS states that support for Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins will end after April 30, 2027. That notice applies to the IDE plugins it describes; it should not be read as an end-of-support date for unrelated AWS products.
How to evaluate candidates on your own repositories
Before making AI review a required merge gate, run shortlisted tools against representative PRs from your own codebase. Include routine changes as well as bug-prone areas, and judge comments against the actual code and project conventions.
- Select representative PRs. Use a mix of languages, change sizes, and components, including PRs with known defects where available.
- Keep the comparison fair. Use the same PRs and record tool versions, settings, context access, and any excluded files. Note when a capability is in preview.
- Label each finding. Have reviewers distinguish actionable defects from incorrect, duplicate, vague, or low-value comments. Track high-severity issues separately from general suggestions.
- Measure the workflow cost. Consider review latency, developer effort to verify comments, false-positive burden, usage charges, and any CI or runner consumption.
- Choose a limited rollout first. Let developers assess the tool alongside tests, static analysis, and human review. Set a clear process for correcting noisy rules or configurations before relying on results for merge decisions.
This evaluation helps answer the question a vendor benchmark cannot settle for your team: whether a tool finds useful defects in your own code without creating an unacceptable review burden.
Can AI code review replace tests or human review?
No. AI review can surface potential problems, but the available comparison does not establish that any tool catches all bugs or can safely approve changes on its own. Keep tests, static analysis, security checks, and human review in the workflow; treat AI comments as findings to verify rather than proof that a PR is safe.
