Start by checking whether the slowdown comes from your internet service or your home Wi-Fi. Compare results from a wired connection, a device near the router, and a device in the room where the connection feels slow. If wired results are also poor, investigate the modem, service plan, or a local ISP issue. If performance drops mainly with distance, focus on Wi-Fi placement, interference, and coverage.
Find out whether the problem is your internet service or Wi-Fi
Your internet connection and your Wi-Fi are not the same thing. Your ISP brings service to the home; your router distributes it wirelessly or over Ethernet. A stronger router cannot fix a slow connection coming from the ISP. As Google’s support guidance puts it, “You can have the best router in the world, but if the internet connection provided by your ISP is slow, you’ll still have slow performance.” Google Home and Nest Help
- Note the advertised speed of your internet plan, which devices are affected, and where you notice the slowdown.
- Pause large downloads, streaming, or other high-bandwidth activity for a comparison test. When several people and devices are online, they share the available bandwidth.
- Run a test on the same device near the router and again in the room where service is poor. If your router or Wi-Fi system offers a test of its own, run that too. These tests use different paths and may not match exactly.
- If possible, connect a computer directly to the router with Ethernet and run a test. A direct wired connection avoids Wi-Fi congestion and is useful for checking the service entering your home.
Repeat tests under similar conditions, and try another time of day if results are unexpectedly low. Test-server location and network congestion can affect measurements; Google explains these factors in its speed-test guidance.
What the results suggest
- Wired and nearby Wi-Fi are both slow: The issue may be with the ISP connection, modem, plan, or a local service problem. Contact your ISP if repeated wired tests remain below what you expect.
- Wired or nearby Wi-Fi is good, but a distant room is slow: The incoming service is less likely to be the main problem. Investigate router location, obstacles, interference, device limitations, and coverage.
- Only one device is slow: Compare another device in the same spot. An older device or one with limited Wi-Fi capability may be the bottleneck.
Improve Wi-Fi without buying anything
Move the router into a better position
Place the router near the center of the area where you use Wi-Fi, in the open and above floor level if practical. Avoid hiding it in a cabinet or closet, or placing it behind thick walls and large obstructions. Retest with the same device in the same room after moving it so you can tell whether the change helped. Google’s router-placement guidance also recommends choosing a central, open location.

Check the device, Wi-Fi band, and interference
Wi-Fi speed depends on more than the router: distance, walls, the device’s wireless capability, and other active devices all matter. Compare on the same device and at the same location rather than treating results from different devices as a direct measure of router performance.
If your network offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, neither is always best. 5 GHz can be faster over shorter distances, while 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther. Compare them where each signal is usable. Nearby Wi-Fi networks and household electronics can also interfere with wireless performance.

Use Ethernet for a stable connection or a clearer diagnosis
A direct Ethernet connection is a good way to check whether Wi-Fi is the weak link, and it can be a practical choice for a stationary computer, TV, or game console. The FCC notes that Ethernet provides the highest speeds and alleviates Wi-Fi congestion in its Broadband Speed Guide.
For the connection to deliver the intended speed, check every link in the path: the computer or other device, Ethernet cable, router port, and any modem or network equipment. A cable or port that does not support the intended rate can constrain the result. If buying an Ethernet cable, choose one appropriate for the speeds and ports of the equipment you are connecting.

Fix dead zones with existing equipment before expanding
If Wi-Fi is good near the main router but weak in one part of the home, first try repositioning any mesh points or extenders you already have. A mesh point needs a usable connection to its upstream point; putting it inside the dead zone may leave it with a weak link and little ability to improve service farther away.
- Place the mesh point between the weak area and the nearest upstream point, rather than at the far edge of the dead zone.
- Use your system’s mesh test or connection-status feature, if available, to check whether the point has a strong link.
- Retest in the problem room after moving the point. If performance remains poor, try a different position that improves the point’s connection to the main router or another mesh point.
A mesh Wi-Fi system is intended to improve coverage across rooms; it does not increase the speed of a slow incoming ISP connection. Results depend on node placement and the link between nodes. Check compatibility with your existing setup, the coverage the system is designed for, and whether it uses wired or wireless backhaul before choosing one. Google provides additional Wi-Fi point placement guidance.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
When to contact your ISP or change your plan
If direct Ethernet tests remain low across repeated checks, ask your ISP whether there is an outage or local service issue, whether your modem is suitable, and whether your subscribed plan limits the speed you can receive. Share when you tested and the results from the wired connection, along with the affected devices and rooms.
A faster plan can help only when your subscribed service tier is the constraint. It will not fix poor Wi-Fi coverage, an unsuitable modem, or a local service fault. Ask the ISP to identify the likely limitation before paying for an upgrade. Availability, plan terms, and equipment requirements vary by provider and location.
