A test measures throughput along one connection path to one server at one moment; slow-feeling internet can instead come from Wi-Fi coverage, competing traffic, latency or packet loss, a device or app, the destination server, network equipment, or the ISP’s route. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, then narrow down where the experience changes.
What a speed test measures—and what it does not
A speed test transfers data between your device or router and a particular test server, then reports throughput, usually as download and upload speeds. Results can vary with the test server’s location, your network activity, and congestion at the time. A nearby server may produce a different result from a distant one.
Some tests measure a different segment of the connection. For example, Google Nest or Google Wifi’s built-in test measures between the router or primary Wifi point and Google’s servers, rather than necessarily measuring the path from your personal device to a website. Google explains its test and what it covers in its speed-test guidance. A strong result on one segment does not guarantee that another segment or service is performing well.
Throughput is also only part of the experience. The Federal Communications Commission identifies download and upload speed, latency, and packet loss as key performance measures, and notes that user experience also depends on other parts of the internet, the application, and the device. See the FCC 13th MBA Fixed Broadband Report (2024). High Mbps can coexist with delayed interactions, choppy calls, or slow page loads if latency, packet loss, the app, or a remote server is the issue.

- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Start with a clean comparison
- Reduce competing activity. Pause large downloads and streams, and close unnecessary apps on the test device. Other household devices can use bandwidth while you test.
- Run more than one test. Record the time, device, test service or server, and download and upload results. Repeat later at a quieter time if the problem varies.
- Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If practical, connect the same device directly to the router by Ethernet, then test over Wi-Fi in the same location. Google Fiber recommends limiting competing activity and using Ethernet for a more accurate test; its speed-test guidance also cautions that browser testing may not accurately represent connections over 3 Gbps.
Interpret the comparison as a clue, not proof of a particular fault. If wired performance is consistently good while Wi-Fi is poor, investigate the wireless connection and device. If both are poor, check the equipment and wired path, then consider an ISP issue.
Use the symptom to narrow down the cause
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Ethernet works well, but Wi-Fi feels slow | Test closer to the router, inspect router and mesh placement, and consider interference, Wi-Fi band, or the device’s wireless capability. |
| One device is slow, but others are not | Compare that device near the router and over Ethernet if possible. Its Wi-Fi capability, location, or running applications may be the difference. |
| Several devices slow down at once | Check active downloads, streams, and other network activity. Repeat at a quieter time to see whether the issue changes. |
| Things slow down mainly at certain times | Record when it happens and compare wired results at busy and quiet times. Congestion can occur within the home or on the ISP network. |
| Pages or calls are delayed despite good throughput | Throughput alone cannot diagnose responsiveness. Latency, packet loss, the app, the device, or the destination service may be involved. |
| Connection is intermittent or fails on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet | Check cables and equipment, restart the modem and network equipment, and check with your ISP for an outage or recurring service issue. |
Check Wi-Fi coverage before replacing equipment
Test near the router, then in the location where the problem occurs. If performance changes substantially with distance, walls, or floors, coverage or interference may be contributing. Place the router in a central, open location rather than inside a cabinet or behind obstacles. For a mesh network, check that points are positioned to provide a useful connection between one another and the device.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
The band and device matter too. Google notes that devices using 2.4 GHz may not achieve speeds as fast as those using 5 GHz; support and capability vary by both router and client device. Google’s slow-internet troubleshooting guidance covers placement and other checks for Nest Wifi and Google Wifi. Reposition and retest before treating a new router or mesh point as the answer.
Inspect the wired path and equipment
If Ethernet is also slow, check every link between the device and modem or router: cable condition and rating, Ethernet port ratings, and any switch, splitter, or adapter in the path. The slowest component can limit the connection. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for internet speeds above 100 Mbps. That is a conditional check, not a reason to replace a cable that is already suitable and working normally.

A speed test can show that one route delivered good throughput at one time; it cannot certify every application or route. If tests are consistently strong but one website or app remains slow, compare another service and another device. If only one device has trouble, focus on that device; if several devices show the same issue, examine shared network conditions or the service path. These comparisons help localize the problem, but do not uniquely identify its cause.
