Do not use a browser extension to automate actions on Medium unless Medium has given express written consent. Medium’s Rules specifically restrict automatic access through browser plugins and add-ons. The safer approach is to automate work outside Medium—such as drafting and proofreading—then use Medium’s own editor or import tool and personally review and initiate publication.
Can a browser extension automatically publish to Medium?
There is no policy-safe shortcut established for automatically posting through a browser extension. Medium’s Rules prohibit using software or other automatic processes to access its services for any purpose without express written consent, and explicitly name browser plugins and add-ons. An extension does not become permitted simply because it runs in a browser or is available through a browser extension store.
Medium’s API restrictions are a separate issue. Its API/Importing help page says it will not issue new API integration tokens or allow new integrations; existing tokens continue to work. The API terms also prohibit using the API to post automatically generated content that was not initiated by a Medium user. Those API terms do not replace the broader restriction on automatic access in the Rules.
Unless you have Medium’s express written consent, avoid extensions or scripts that log in, navigate Medium, fill in the editor, click publishing controls, or otherwise automate access to the service. Do not treat browser-driven automation as a workaround for the API limits.

Which publishing workflow should you use?
Choose the workflow based on where the story currently lives and whether you have permission to publish it. Medium’s documented editor and import tool keep the final review and publish action in your hands.

How to prepare and publish a new story with Medium’s editor
- Prepare the material outside Medium. Draft and proofread your text, organize your assets, and confirm that you have permission to use them. This can streamline the work without giving a third-party extension access to Medium.
- Write in Medium’s editor. Medium’s first-story guide says a new draft is saved automatically as you write.
- Open the publishing menu and review the story settings. The guide describes adding topics, customizing the title and subtitle, setting a preview image, and scheduling a post. Paywall options are available if you are eligible.
- Check the finished story and publish it yourself. Choose “Publish now” only after reviewing the content and settings. This is a user-led workflow, not an automated extension publishing the story on your behalf.
How to import a post that is already on your website
- Start with the existing post’s URL. Use Medium’s documented import tool to bring the webpage into a draft.
- Check the imported date and canonical link. Medium says the import tool automatically backdates the story to its original date and adds a canonical link to the source page. That link identifies the original version; check that it points to the right page.
- Review and edit the draft. Inspect the text, formatting, images, and any other elements before publication.
- Publish the story yourself. Medium’s import guide describes reviewing and editing the imported story before clicking Publish.
Import only content from another site that you have the right to publish. That includes checking your rights to the post and its assets; the availability of an import function does not itself grant permission. See Medium’s import guidance.

If importing does not work
Medium’s troubleshooting guidance recommends manual migration: create a draft, copy and paste the content, add missing images or embeds, and format the story in the editor. You can optionally set a canonical link before using the publishing menu. A canonical link can point readers and search systems to the source version, but it does not replace the need to have publication rights.
How to check a browser extension’s permissions
Permission review helps you understand what an extension may access; it does not make an extension compliant with Medium’s Rules. Chrome explains that permission to access data on all websites can allow an extension to read, request, or modify data on every page you visit. - Read the permission list before installing. Ask whether each requested site and capability is necessary for the extension’s stated purpose.
- Prefer narrower access where it fits the function. An extension that requests access across all websites has broader potential access than one limited to particular sites.
- Read the data-use disclosure. Chrome Web Store policies call for clear disclosure of data collection, use, and sharing, and informed consent when data is handled. The policies also tell developers to request the narrowest permissions needed to provide their features or services. Chrome Web Store Program Policies
- Be cautious when broad access has no clear explanation. Permission warnings describe potential access; they do not, by themselves, prove an extension is malicious. Store review is not a guarantee that an extension is safe or that Medium permits its use.
What this means for scheduling and other repetitive work
Medium’s documented publishing menu lets you schedule a post, but that does not establish permission for an extension to operate the menu automatically. If you want to reduce repetitive work, prepare the content and settings in advance, then use Medium’s own interface to review and schedule or publish the story. Do not automate Medium page access unless you have express written consent.
If a post includes commercial placements, check Medium’s publication guidelines before proceeding: they prohibit third-party advertising or sponsorship promotion in posts, publications, and newsletters.
