Then adjust while watching your camera preview, because room lighting, camera settings and background colors affect how the light looks. There is no universally supported brightness percentage: use enough light to make your face clear without washing it out.
Choose a starting color temperature
Color temperature, measured in kelvins (K), describes whether white light appears warm or cool. Elgato says lower values look warmer and higher values look cooler. Its ranges are practical starting points, not guaranteed settings for every face, camera or room.

These suggestions come from Elgato’s Key Light technical specifications and setup guidance. Wall color, background illumination and other light sources can change the apparent result, so judge the final look through your camera rather than relying on the Kelvin number alone; Elgato discusses these variables in its lighting setup guide.
Set brightness by looking at the camera image
Brightness depends on your camera, the light’s distance, other room lighting and the background. Increase output until your face is clear, then lower it if your face looks overlit. The manufacturer’s sources do not establish one brightness percentage as best for all video calls or streams.

Elgato’s Stream Deck how-to includes 40% as an example meeting-mode preset, not a universal recommendation. Treat it as an example to customize, not a target for every setup. Elgato’s Stream Deck guide documents brightness controls and presets.
Place the light to shape your face
One primary light
Elgato’s Getting Started with Key Light guide, dated December 15, 2020, recommends placing a primary Key Light directly in front of you, just above eye level, angled downward by about 30 degrees. This puts the light in front of your face rather than below it.

Two lights
For a two-light setup, Elgato recommends placing one light on each side of the desk and aiming both toward your face at about 45 degrees. The guide says this arrangement can reduce shadows and help illuminate a green screen or wall behind you. It adds a second light and setup complexity, so use it when you need the extra coverage rather than assuming it is necessary.

Adjust the light in Control Center
- Connect the original Key Light to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network during pairing, as described in Elgato’s setup guide.
- Open Elgato Control Center on a device connected to the network.
- Select the Key Light to switch it on or off, then adjust brightness and color temperature while checking the camera preview. Elgato documents these controls in its Key Light guide.
Use Stream Deck only if you want shortcut controls
Control Center is enough to adjust the light; Stream Deck is optional. Elgato documents Stream Deck actions for power, setting or incrementing brightness, and setting or incrementing color temperature. Its how-to also describes Stream Deck Mobile’s free six-key layout. Choose a physical controller if you want dedicated shortcuts or preset workflows; otherwise, use Control Center. See Elgato’s Stream Deck control guide.
