For a clearly stated, long-term Android update commitment, consider Google Pixel 8 and later or the Fairphone (Gen. 6). Google promises seven years of Android OS updates, security updates and Feature Drops from a model’s first availability on the US Google Store. Fairphone says Gen. 6 will receive at least seven Android version upgrades, plus an additional year of security updates, scheduled through June 2033. iPhones are also strong candidates for longevity, but Apple does not provide a comparable fixed future support term in the cited material.
Which phones have the clearest long software support?
These are useful named options, not an exhaustive ranking of every phone or regional variant. Their support terms are not directly interchangeable: Google states a seven-year update period, Fairphone separates Android version upgrades from security support, and Apple’s evidence is compatibility and historical practice rather than a fixed future guarantee.
| Phone | What the maker states or documents | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of Android OS updates, security updates and Feature Drops, counted from first availability on the US Google Store. Google’s update policy and Pixel 8 announcement. | Check the exact model’s first-availability date. Buying later does not restart the support clock. |
| Fairphone (Gen. 6) | At least seven Android version upgrades, plus one additional year of security updates; security support is scheduled through June 2033. Fairphone FAQ and release notes. | Fairphone’s release notes say patches are monthly for about the first three years, then every other month. The model launched June 25, 2025, according to the FAQ. |
| iPhone 11 and later; iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) | Apple lists these models as compatible with iOS 26. Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list. | Compatibility is model-specific, and available features vary by model, region, language and carrier. Apple does not give these models a fixed future support end date in the cited evidence. |
What counts as software support?
“Updates” can refer to several different things. Compare them separately rather than treating one headline number as a guarantee that every kind of update arrives for the same duration.
- Major OS upgrades bring a new Android or iOS version. Fairphone states a minimum number of Android version upgrades for Gen. 6; Google’s Pixel commitment includes Android OS updates.
- Security updates address security issues. A phone may continue to receive some security fixes after it stops receiving the newest major OS version.
- Feature updates add or change functions without necessarily being a new OS version. Google explicitly includes ongoing Feature Drops in its Pixel commitment.
The start date matters just as much as the duration. Google measures Pixel support from first availability on the US Google Store, not from the day an individual buys the phone. Confirm the model’s date and local terms before comparing it with another phone.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How long do iPhones receive updates?
Apple’s current compatibility list provides a useful snapshot, not a forecast: iOS 26 supports iPhone 11 and later, as well as iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). Apple’s 2024 longevity paper says major OS feature updates have reached devices as far back as six years from original release. It also says Apple strives to provide critical security updates after support for the newest OS ends. These describe historical practice and a stated aim, not a universal fixed-year promise for future iPhones.
Apple’s security releases record shows older iPhone generations receiving some security updates. That is evidence of Apple’s practice, not a promise that every older model will receive every future patch.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How to choose a phone for long ownership
- Find the exact model and its official policy. Brand-wide claims can hide differences between generations or regional variants. Use the manufacturer’s model-level support page.
- Separate upgrade count from security duration. A stated number of OS upgrades does not automatically tell you how long security patches continue, and vice versa.
- Check when the support clock starts. A phone introduced earlier may have less support time remaining than a newer model, even if both advertise a similar duration.
- Look at patch cadence. Monthly and every-other-month schedules are different practical levels of timeliness; cadence can also change during a phone’s support period.
- Confirm current compatibility and local availability. For Apple, check the specific model against the current iOS compatibility list. For any brand, verify local terms and whether the listing is for the intended generation.
- Consider ownership factors beyond software. Price, repairability, battery replacement access, performance and parts availability affect whether a phone remains useful, but update promises alone do not establish how those will hold up.
What update-adoption figures can—and cannot—tell you
Apple reported that more than 74% of iPhone devices introduced in the previous four years had updated to iOS 26 by February 2026 in its 2026 Environmental Progress Report. This is an adoption figure, not a support-duration measure, and it should not be compared with Android-brand adoption rates using the evidence cited here.

The cited official sources establish the named Google and Fairphone commitments and Apple compatibility and history, but do not establish current model-level terms for Samsung, OnePlus or every other manufacturer to the same standard. That is why this is a focused comparison rather than a complete market ranking. For another brand, look for an official policy covering the exact model, the kinds of updates included, the support clock’s start and regional availability.
