Use AI virtual try-on to preview how clothing might look—not to confirm fit, choose a size, or assume your photo stays private. Generated images can misrepresent body proportions or garment details, and each service handles photos differently. Check the size chart, fit notes, reviews, and privacy notice before deciding whether to buy or upload an image.
What AI virtual try-on can—and cannot—tell you
Virtual try-on (VTO) uses an image of you and a product image to generate a preview of how an item might appear. That can help you consider broad styling or appearance. It is not the same as putting on the garment, measuring your body, or testing how fabric falls and moves.
Google Shopping Help states: “The generated image can help you see how an item might look, but it does not determine or guarantee the actual fit of the garment.” That statement describes Google’s own Shopping feature, not every VTO service. Google also says its generated image may contain errors in body shape, personal features, or garment details; it does not recommend a size or show size availability. ASOS likewise describes its preview as general guidance that may not accurately represent body shape, proportions, size, color, or fit.
For a purchase decision, rely on the product’s measurements and size chart, customer reviews, fit notes, and other product details. Google advises shoppers to consult these regardless of the visualization, and ASOS gives similar advice. A convincing-looking image alone does not establish the garment’s measurements, stretch, drape, or comfort.

Why the preview may be inaccurate
The result depends partly on the photo you provide and partly on the merchant’s product image. A clear rendering cannot compensate for a poor source image or establish how an item will feel or fit in real life.
- Your photo: For Google’s feature, its guidance recommends a well-lit image with a clean background, either a full-body photo or a selfie, fitted clothing, and visible hands. Google cautions that overly baggy clothing may distort the result. These are tips for Google’s tool, not universal requirements for every service.
- The product image: Google says product-image quality affects the result. Its merchant guidance calls for the whole garment to be clearly visible and unobstructed. A product image that hides part of an item or presents it unclearly can limit what the preview shows.
- Generated details: Google’s guidance warns that body shape, personal features, and garment details can be wrong in the generated output. ASOS also warns that its preview may not accurately reflect appearance or fit.
How to assess a try-on service’s privacy
Privacy depends on the exact retailer, app, and processing arrangement. Before uploading a photo, read the notice attached to the feature you intend to use. Look for clear answers to these questions:

- Is the photo uploaded to a server, processed on your device, or both?
- Which third-party providers receive or process the photo?
- Does the service derive biometric data or facial geometry?
- Are images used to train or evaluate models?
- How long are the original and generated images kept, and where?
- Can you delete them, and are consent and age requirements clear?
Google and ASOS illustrate why one provider’s promises should not be generalized to others:
- Google Shopping: Google says its described feature does not collect or store biometric data and does not use shopper photos for training. It says photos are used to generate the try-on and provides controls to delete original and generated images. Google also describes trained human review to evaluate image quality, with measures intended to disconnect review data from accounts and help remove identifying or sensitive information. Read Google’s Shopping privacy and feature guidance for the details and controls that apply to its service.
- ASOS: ASOS says a third-party provider processes the image, and that ASOS itself does not retain the photos or generated images. Its help page distinguishes images held on the user’s device—up to 28 days or until the ASOS app is next opened—from images held by the try-on tool, which it says are kept for 24 hours. Its customer-care page describes those practices for this feature. ASOS’s AI privacy notice says use is optional and requires explicit consent before use. These are ASOS’s stated terms, not a general retention standard for VTO.
What independent privacy research found
A 2024 Concordia University project led by Mohammad Mannan and Amr Youssef analyzed 138 websites and 28 Android apps. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) hosts a summary of the project. Its reported findings concern that studied sample; they do not measure every current VTO service or establish the practices of a specific tool today.

- Concordia’s 2024 study found that 65% of the websites and 18% of the Android apps in its sample transmitted user images to servers.
- It reported that providers used by 37% of the websites extracted facial geometry from user images.
- It found that 11% of the websites and 25% of VTO providers failed to comply with their own privacy policies, and that 22% of websites used misleading data-handling disclaimers.
- Across the websites analyzed, researchers found 1,446 tracking scripts and 931 cookies.
- The summary also reports image transmission, tracking, and a provider authentication vulnerability among the issues researchers identified.
The OPC notes that its project summary represents the authors’ opinions and does not necessarily reflect the Commissioner’s views. The findings are a reason to check the particular service’s data path, not a basis for assuming every current tool behaves the same way. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check availability and coverage before relying on a feature
VTO availability can depend on country, product category, app, account settings, and whether a retailer is testing the feature with selected users. Google Merchant Center’s documentation describes support for shoes, tops, bottoms, and dresses, but not lingerie, swimwear, or accessories in that experience. It lists availability in a range of markets and says users must be at least 18 and have specified account settings enabled. ASOS’s help page describes a limited test on its iOS app for selected users and products, with a minimum age of 16 and acceptance of a disclaimer. Those descriptions can change; check the current notice and product eligibility where you shop.

For any tool you are considering, assess it on four separate questions:
- Visual fidelity: Does the image preserve garment details and your visible proportions, or does it noticeably alter them?
- Fit and size utility: Is there a separately explained sizing tool, or only a generated picture? Do not treat the picture as proof of fit.
- Privacy and control: Are upload, third-party processing, biometric inference, training use, retention, deletion, consent, and age terms clear?
- Coverage and access: Is the feature available for your location, account or app, and the particular item you want to assess?
Google’s current feature guidance and availability details are in Google Merchant Center’s virtual try-on documentation; Google’s shopper-facing caveats and privacy details are in Google Shopping Help. Retailer terms can change, so read the live notice for the tool before uploading a photo.
