Before uploading a face or body photo for virtual try-on, find out whether the exact feature processes it on your device or sends it to a service, what data it derives, who receives it, how long copies are kept, and how you can delete them. If the notice or consent screen does not answer the questions that matter to you, do not upload. Try-on tools use different data flows, so a brand’s general privacy policy may not tell you enough about a particular feature.
What to check before you upload
Open the privacy notice linked from the try-on feature and read the consent screen before selecting a photo. Look for the following details:
- Where processing happens: Does the feature analyze a live camera feed on your device, or upload a photo or video frames to a provider? If the notice is unclear, do not assume the image stays on your phone.
- What data is involved: Check for the original image, generated preview, account or contact details, and measurements or other data derived from your face or body. For example, TRESemmé says its Image Data may include face geometry.
- Why it is used: Determine whether the image is used only to create the requested preview or also for recommendations, analytics, product development, advertising, or AI training.
- Who receives it: Look for named service providers and whether the policy explains their role. A retailer’s notice may describe vendors without naming each one.
- How long each copy lasts: Check retention for both the original photo and generated results. “Deleted after use” and “kept until you delete it” mean very different things.
- How deletion works: Find the control for removing a photo or result, and check whether account deletion also removes stored images and provider copies. Look for a way to withdraw consent if offered.
- Where it is processed or stored: Note any stated region, especially if location matters to your decision. A region statement does not by itself establish how securely data is handled.
If the feature gives no clear answer about purpose, recipients, or retention—and those terms matter to you—skip it. If it offers a local-processing or no-upload option, compare that flow rather than assuming it is equivalent.
Why a try-on photo may involve more than a photo
A virtual try-on service may analyze a face or body, create a new rendered image, or derive measurements or geometry. Those outputs can be subject to the service’s own retention and use terms, so check what happens to the preview as well as the image you selected.

Do not assume every face-based try-on identifies you. TRESemmé’s notice says Image Data may include face geometry, but also says it is not used to recognize or identify a particular customer. That is a statement about that company’s described feature, not a guarantee about other services.
The FTC’s 2023 announcement defines biometric information as data depicting or describing physical, biological, or behavioral traits or measurements relating to an identified or identifiable person. It also flags privacy, security, bias, and discrimination concerns around biometric technologies. That agency statement does not mean every photo try-on processes biometric identifiers or is unlawful.

Policies vary: examples of disclosed practices
The following are examples from company privacy notices, not independent audits or a representative survey of try-on services. They show why checking the exact feature and channel matters.

These are the companies’ descriptions of their own practices, not verification of system behavior. Policies and processor arrangements can change; read the current notice for the exact app, retailer, feature, and channel you plan to use.

If you already uploaded a photo
- Find the feature’s current privacy notice and account controls. Identify the exact service and look for a photo, result, or history deletion option.
- Delete stored images and results you no longer need. If there is no visible control, contact the service through its privacy or support channel and request deletion of the original, generated results, and copies held by its providers.
- Check what account deletion covers. Do not assume deleting the app or account removes image copies; confirm the service’s terms or ask the provider.
- Withdraw consent if the service offers that option. Keep a record of the request and any confirmation so you can follow up if the service does not explain what was removed.
The FTC’s 2012 staff report on facial-recognition practices gives a directly relevant virtual eyeglass example: an uploaded image is analyzed, glasses are overlaid, and the image may be stored for later use. It recommends explaining storage duration, access, and deletion rights at upload, and disposing of images when they are no longer needed. The report says materially different future uses, such as advertising, should require affirmative express consent. This is agency staff guidance, not a complete statement of current law.
