To estimate your U.S. take-home pay, start with the earnings for one pay period, then subtract employee deductions: net pay = gross pay − employee deductions. Gross pay is what you earned before deductions; net pay is what remains after them. The exact result depends on your pay schedule, withholding details, benefit elections, and state or local rules.

1. Calculate gross pay for the pay period

Gross pay is your earnings before deductions. Use the pay period shown on your paystub—such as a week, two weeks, or a month—and calculate the earnings that belong to that period. Do not confuse the current-period amount with year-to-date earnings.

Hourly pay

For ordinary hours, multiply hours worked by the applicable hourly rate. Then add other compensation earned during the period, such as applicable overtime or other pay. For example, 40 hours at $20 per hour produces $800 in regular earnings before any other compensation.

Overtime pay

For employees covered by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) who are nonexempt, the general federal standard is at least one-and-a-half times the regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. That is a workweek rule, not a threshold based on the length of your pay period. Coverage, exemptions, state requirements, agreements, and how the regular rate is calculated can change the result, so overtime is not always simply extra hours multiplied by the base rate. The U.S. Department of Labor’s FLSA Overtime Calculator Advisor is an estimator for the federal rule.

Salary pay

For a salary, convert the annual amount to the pay period using your actual pay schedule. For example, divide annual salary by the number of scheduled pay periods in the year. Confirm that the resulting amount matches the employer’s payroll schedule and account for any additional earned compensation.

2. Identify employee deductions

Payroll deductions are amounts withheld from an employee’s gross pay. Common categories include:

  • Federal income-tax withholding.
  • Social Security and Medicare taxes.
  • State or local income-tax withholding, where applicable.
  • Employee-elected contributions for benefits or retirement, if applicable.

This is not a universal checklist: which deductions appear and how much they are depend on the jurisdiction, employer, and your elections. Do not subtract employer payroll-tax costs from your gross pay as if they were deductions from your paycheck.

3. Subtract deductions to estimate net pay

Net pay = gross pay − total employee deductions

For instance, if gross pay for a period is $1,000 and employee deductions total $250, estimated net pay is $750. This illustrates the arithmetic only; it does not predict any particular worker’s tax withholding or actual paycheck.

4. Understand federal income-tax withholding

Federal income-tax withholding is money paid during the year toward expected federal income tax. It is not a final calculation of your annual tax bill or refund. Your withholding can differ from the amount ultimately due based on your full-year circumstances.

For 2026, employers use the current Form W-4 information and the applicable methods, worksheets, pay frequency, and tables in IRS Publication 15-T. The publication includes changes to Form W-4 and withholding related to qualified overtime compensation; consult the edition for the relevant tax year because tables and guidance can change. See the IRS Publication 15-T (2026) and IRS Publication 15 (2026), Employer’s Tax Guide.

Withholding depends on details including your W-4 entries, pay frequency, multiple jobs, and other income or deductions. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help you review federal withholding. It provides an estimate, not a guarantee of your final tax result.

IRS Publication 15-T (2026) describes a qualified overtime deduction of up to $12,500, or $25,000 for married couples filing jointly, for tax years beginning after 2024 and ending before 2029. This is a tax-return deduction subject to the applicable rules; it does not mean overtime earnings are excluded from paycheck calculations or payroll-tax treatment. Use the IRS guidance for eligibility and details.

5. Check a paycheck calculator against your paystub

The U.S. Department of Defense Financial Readiness Program’s Payroll Deductions Calculator estimates net pay and says it uses IRS Publications 15 and 15-T; it indicates calculations for 2026 income-tax withholding. The IRS estimator focuses on federal withholding. Neither tool alone accounts for every state or local tax, employer-specific deduction, or benefit election.

For a useful comparison, enter the same pay-period gross earnings, pay frequency, location, W-4 details, benefit elections, and other deductions in any estimator. Check that the tool uses the relevant tax year and jurisdiction, and compare per-period figures with per-period figures—not year-to-date totals. Treat estimates as estimates and use your actual paystub and current official guidance to verify the result.

6. If your paycheck does not match your estimate

  • Confirm you used the correct pay period and did not substitute year-to-date totals.
  • Check hours, rates, overtime, and other compensation against the employer’s records. For FLSA overtime information and records guidance, see the Department of Labor’s FLSA Overtime Calculator Advisor for Nonexempt Employees.
  • Review the deductions actually listed on the paystub, including benefit or retirement elections and any state or local withholding that applies.
  • Check that federal withholding reflects your current Form W-4 information and the correct tax-year guidance.
  • Ask your payroll department about an item you cannot identify or a mismatch in hours, compensation, or deductions.
