If ChatGPT’s virtual try-on changes your face, body shape, or clothing details, ask for a fresh, more specific edit that says exactly what to change and what to preserve. You can also select an area for a local correction, then inspect the whole image because edits may spill beyond the selection. Treat the result as a visual approximation—not proof of a garment’s appearance, fit, or size.
Why ChatGPT’s try-on image may look different
ChatGPT’s shopping results may show a Try on button for clothing and accessories. Select it, then take or upload a selfie to see a generated image. You can also upload an image of clothing or an accessory in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. OpenAI says this experience uses ChatGPT Images. OpenAI’s shopping guide describes the feature and its limitations.
The image is generated rather than a direct photograph of you wearing the actual item. As a result, your likeness, proportions, pose, scene, or details of the garment may shift. A specific instruction can help focus the edit, but OpenAI does not promise perfect preservation on every attempt.
How to correct the image
1. State what should change—and what must stay the same
Ask for the clothing change directly, then spell out the details to preserve. For example:

Edit the image to dress the person using the provided clothing image. Replace only the clothing. Keep the person’s face, facial features, skin tone, body shape, pose, identity, expression, hairstyle, and proportions unchanged. Keep the background, camera angle, and framing unchanged. Fit the clothing naturally to the existing pose and body, with realistic fabric folds, lighting, and shadows. Do not add accessories, text, logos, or watermarks.
Adjust the prompt to match your image and the specific garment. Naming both the desired change and the protected details gives the request a clear scope; it is not a guarantee that every detail will remain identical. OpenAI’s image prompting guide includes a similar preservation-focused example.

2. Use selection for a local correction
If, for example, only the sleeve pattern is wrong, select that area in the image editor and describe the correction. You can also enter an edit description without selecting an area. The editor’s selection is not a precise boundary: OpenAI notes that highlights may be imprecise and changes can affect areas outside them. See Images in ChatGPT for the editor controls.
3. Check the whole result
Review the face, body proportions, pose, clothing color and pattern, logos and other garment details, background, and framing. Also look for visual problems such as implausible folds, awkward draping, or lighting that does not match the scene. OpenAI’s image evaluation guidance identifies identity, body shape, pose, product details, scene preservation, and physical plausibility as relevant dimensions; it does not mean every output will satisfy them.

How to judge whether the result is useful
Use the generated image as a rough visual preview, not as a reliable representation of the item or your appearance. OpenAI cautions that “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” Before buying, check the merchant’s product details and measurements, and review its return policy. The generated image cannot confirm how the real garment will fit or whether its color, pattern, logos, or material will match the product.
