You can carry a video project’s edit decisions to another editor, but there is no universal project file that reliably preserves every effect, transition, title, audio setting, and piece of metadata. Keep the original project, package its media, export a format supported by the destination editor, then compare the imported timeline with a reference render before continuing.

What you need to transfer

A cross-editor handoff has two parts: the timeline description and the media files it refers to. A project interchange file may describe clips, edits, and tracks, while footage, audio, graphics, and other source assets remain separate. Some creative details may not translate, even when the destination can import the interchange file.

Before starting, confirm the receiving editor and version, the exact interchange format and version it accepts, and whether it expects media to be linked, copied alongside the interchange file, or relinked after import. Do not assume that two applications support the same format simply because both call it XML.

How to move the project safely

  1. Preserve the native project. Save a separate handoff copy and leave the original project untouched. Treat the interchange export as a translation, not a replacement for the source file.
  2. Package the media. Include every source file the timeline needs and keep the folder structure predictable. In Premiere, Adobe documents the Project Manager option Collect Files and Copy to New Location for copying files. Its alternative, Consolidate and Transcode, can convert files to a single codec for compatibility. Adobe also documents options to exclude unused clips and specify handles. Transfer the saved folder with its structure intact; a portable external SSD can carry a large folder, but it does not convert projects or improve effect compatibility. Adobe: Copy and consolidate projects.
  3. Export the format agreed with the recipient. Make sure the project is saved and media is linked when required by the export workflow. For Premiere XML export, Adobe recommends checking the FCP Translation Results log after export. Adobe: Exporting Final Cut Pro XML.
  4. Import into a test copy and relink media. Follow the destination editor’s import and relinking instructions. With Premiere-exported AAF in Avid Media Composer, Adobe says footage does not automatically relink; use Avid’s Batch Import. Adobe: Exporting AAF files.
  5. Compare and repair before continuing. Check the imported timeline against a reference video rendered from the source editor. Compare frame rate and dimensions, clip in/out points, track order, gaps, transitions, speed changes, titles, effects, audio levels and panning, and sync. These checks are practical safeguards; exact results depend on the editor pair and versions.
  6. Keep the handoff together until it is accepted. Retain the native original, interchange file, media package, reference render, and a short note naming the source and destination software versions.

Which interchange format should you use?

Choose based on the receiving application, its supported format version, and the work that must survive—not on a format’s name alone. The documented paths below are examples, not a complete compatibility list for every editor.

Premiere to Final Cut Pro XML-compatible tools Premiere can export Final Cut Pro XML after the project is saved and media is linked. Adobe documents this export for Final Cut Pro 7 or earlier and compatible tools; for Final Cut Pro X, Adobe points to a third-party converter. Adobe says only a few Premiere effects and features transfer. Audio pan, gain, and level may be inaccurate, and complex effects and transitions may not translate exactly. Review the translation log. Adobe’s XML export guidance.
Premiere AAF to Avid Media Composer or Pro Tools Adobe identifies Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools as compatible with Premiere-exported AAF. Adobe has not tested these exports with other AAF importers. For Avid, source footage requires Batch Import relinking; merged clips must be unmerged before export, and transition-length requirements apply. On documented Windows configurations, embedded AAF files larger than 2 GB are unsupported and fail to export; Adobe advises exporting with separate audio for large AAFs. Adobe’s AAF export guidance.
Final Cut Pro FCPXML Apple documents importing and exporting XML for libraries, events, projects, and clips, with a choice of the current or either of two earlier interchange versions. Apple’s developer reference says FCPXML describes certain, but not all, project and event aspects; it does not replace native library-bundle data. FCPXML 1.10 and later uses .fcpxmld bundles in Final Cut Pro. Apple says version 1.10 or later is required for object tracking and Cinematic mode features introduced in Final Cut Pro 10.6. What to expect from effects, audio, and metadata

Interchange formats can preserve edit decisions without carrying every application-specific instruction needed to reproduce the source timeline exactly. Adobe explicitly warns that only a few Premiere effects and features transfer in its Premiere-to-Final-Cut XML workflow; it also flags possible audio pan, gain, level, effect, and transition discrepancies. A successful import therefore means the destination read the file, not that every creative decision survived.

Apple likewise describes FCPXML as an exchange description rather than a replacement for native Final Cut Pro library-bundle data. If the destination must continue detailed work on effects, titles, audio processing, or other application-specific settings, identify those items in advance and plan to inspect or rebuild them after import.

Final checks before editing onward

  • Confirm the imported sequence has the intended frame rate and dimensions.
  • Check clip order, in/out points, track placement, gaps, and sync against the reference render.
  • Inspect transitions, speed changes, titles, effects, audio levels, and panning for omissions or changes.
  • Verify media is online and that linked files resolve from the handoff folder.
  • Review any conversion or translation log, then save the validated import as a new destination-native project.
